On August 16, 1977 I started work at Revere Sugar Refinery. That lasted nine months. I left before they put me on warning for excessive absenteeism. In the subsequent 38 years, I've missed less time in total than I did while I worked there.

The connection? I heard about Elvis from the guy that picked me up for work; I hadn't heard about it by 6 am.

I remember my Dad was driving home (he worked out of town at the time) and he heard the news. He came home and cried. As kids we went to all of the Elvis movies at the theater and then watched them a multitude of times on TV. I turn on the Elvis station on Sirius when driving occasionally. It's too bad things went the way they did for him.

I was in the hospital about to go into surgery and heard one of the nurses say that Elvis had died. When I woke up after surgery I asked someone if it was true. I thought it was my drug-induced state causing me to hallucinate.

The first 45 record I ever had was given to me by a friend of my dad's in the Army. It was Hound Dog by Elvis Presley.

I was at the morning session of miserable high school football 2 a day practices. A friend who lived by the stadium came running out of his house yelling that Elvis died. This guy loved Elvis, and frequently did imitations during school. Never forget it.

Elvis and I share a birthday. My dad was a huge fan, but I don't think he planned it that way or anything.

I went to one of my favorite casinos yesterday and lo and behold, an Elvis slot machine.
