Lifting programme for newbie?

I've recently invested in a 50kg barbell for home use and was wondering if anyone could advise a good programme for an absolute beginner? I've used handheld weights at home before, but nothing like proper "lifting". Thanks in advance! x

Have you gotten the EM2WL free begginers lifting program? That's a good place to start: www.em2wl.com/results
Also the New Rules of Weight Lifting for Women, by Lou Schuler, is an excellent book with a 6 months plan.
If you like videos, www.cathe.com has some amazing choices.

I shall check those out! I didn't realise EM2WL had a lifting programme, too! Excellent!0

Actually, there are quite a few different ones. You will find free ones (about 6 months worth of workouts) and paid ones. We also offer private one on one coaching, fitness and nutrition advice.
If you have questions, just ask!

Just to echo what Tereza said. I tried NROLFW when I first started but I got bored after a few weeks.
The EM2WL workouts are great, love the strength training for beginners;

I also love Cathe DVD's for beginners, love them for experts too! But she is so good at showing good form it's like having a trainer in the room with you.
STS is a great periodised programme and teaches you a lot too. http://eatmore2weighless.com/shop/
So good that you invested in a barbell! Yeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh!

I started with strong lifts 5x5 but branched out from there.
Kiki's programs are great. You tubed linked as well.1 -
I downloaded the free program from EM2WL and it looks good. My only problem is I only have access to dumbbells (range from 3lb each to 20lb) so I have a nice range of dumbbells --I found a dumbbell routine on bodybuilder.com but does EM2WL have any recommendations for a dumbbell only workout. I can't buy any more equipment at this time.0

DSFfit, I'm glad you liked the EM2WL program. You can definitely substitute the barbell for dumbbells, as long as you keep challenging yourself. Two dbs instead of a bb for presses and squats, for instance. The difference is that over time you would be able to lift higher with the bbs. But you can sub without issues. You will find many videos on YouTube (many from the bodybuilding.com) showing you how to do. There's an excellent, inexpensive book called "The Big Book of Exercises" that has tons of options and substitutions with pictures (that's the book that got me started). No need to spend big bucks. Happy lifting!
