View on my hike to Emerald Ridge in Mt. Rainier N.P. today. My hike covered 13.7 miles, with 3,000 feet of climbing. Beautiful day.

Breathtaking! What do you do to get in shape for such a hike? I live in Ecuador and want to hike up some of the mountains here in the Andes.0

My exercise routine is pretty simple: I walk and hike. I take fast walks near my home as often as I can, covering about 6 miles (10 km) in 1 hr. 20 min. I hike as often as I can get out, too. Three years ago my typical hike was 8 to 10 miles, with 1,500 feet of climbing. I'd be pretty tired when I finished. But, by hiking 500 to 600 miles a year I now do much longer, harder hikes for the same effort. This summer, I did one day hike of 29 miles, the longest of my life. I am 66 years old. It helps me to maintain a journal where I record all my hikes and fitness walks. You can do it, too. Just lace on your hiking shoes and start walking.0
