Feeling down today

I know I shouldn't rely on the scale but it has not budged at all this week. I'm only on my 2nd week that I have been eating full blown keto (no cheating), watching my calories, going on a 30 minute walk every day this week and still nothing. I know I shouldn't pay it no mind but this is really discouraging me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I shouldn't be hitting a plateau this early on should I or is not losing any weight this week even considered a plateau lol

@_tierachanel don't worry about it. My scale has been going up and down this week. In the past my scale would completely stall for a week and then I'd see a 2+ lb dropped. If you are truly eating keto and hitting your calorie goals then it will drop. Give it another week or two and if it STILL hasn't gone down then you are indeed in a plateau. I know there's a few suggestions on getting out of plateaus such as egg fast, IF, carb refeeding, etc. You would just have to look those up or post another thread on how to break a plateau. Perhaps your carb balance is a tad too high. Also be sure to drink lots of water and get your sleep.

The human body is complex, and it's not a machine. As long as you are doing everything right, you are losing fat, even though the scale isn't showing it. Don't give up, this is a long-term WOE, not a short diet. The scale will move again!

This is a series of videos from Dr. Jason Fung. He makes a very good case for IF. Although I am now in a maintenance phase, I have seen other benefits from trying this recently, and I have read many posts here of people using IF to overcome plateaus.

There are 6 videos in all here.

I've actually been IF for the past like week and a half and still haven't budged the scale. Maybe my TOM is approaching and its holding me back a little. Who knows. I've weighed mostly all my foods and logged everything so I don't know why I'm not losing. I dropped like 11 pounds the first week so maybe I'm over reacting. I think my issue is I'm comparing this weight loss journey to my loss I had a few years ago when I started keto then. I lost like 17 pounds the first 2 weeks and this time I'm having a harder time dropping the weight. I'm not giving up and I will stick with this WOE. I think I'm just putting too much thought into it and psyching myself out. I hate how weight loss is such a mental game. :(

If you aren't already doing measurements in addition to the scale, then please consider starting right now. Most of this month my weight did nothing but creep up, however, I consistently lost 1/2" to 1" per week off my waist and/or belly area. It would have been very hard to stay motivated if I didn't have those measurements reinforcing that I was losing even though the scale was being a lying little brat. Particularly if you are adding exercise into the formula, the fluctuations in water retention in your muscles after activity can totally throw off the scale when you are actually metabolizing and losing fat for real.

11 pounds in 1 week?!?!?!?! Definitely stop freaking out. That is not sustainable. Even if it was, it wouldn't be healthy. I am sure there was some water weight in that first week - and likely more than there should have been to the point of partial dehydration. You probably did lose actual weight the second week but didn't show it because your fluid levels were getting back in line.

I wouldn't look at it as being stuck or a plateau unless you are at a month or more of not making progress because I think it is unrealistic to have completely consistent losses because your body composition is changing also.

It was definitely mostly water weight and I wasn't dehydrated. I drink almost a gallon everyday. I'm not expecting to lose 11 pounds or even 3 pounds every week. I've even seen people on their first week drop like 4-5 pounds in 2-3 days. I know that is not sustainable and I'm not expecting that to happen to me. It was just concerning to me that after a week the scale hasn't even budged and ounce. That's all I'm saying.

I took my measurements I think back in March. I'll measure myself again tonight. I forgot I even took my measurements because its been so long.

Hang in there. We all go through stuff like this. You are right the 11 lbs the first week is mostly water weight. I lost 8 lbs my first week and then I was back to a lb here and there. Some weeks you may see more than a pound gone and in others you may see a gain. A lot of us women see increases or no loss around our cycles. I don't even mess with the scale for about two weeks during that time. Hang in there and trust your body and the process! You've got this! A dozen people here will tell you not to trust the scale - toss it from the window on the highest floor and forget it. I can't do that. I'm so scale oriented but I did start taking pics and measurements to supplement the lying scale.

Yeah. 11 pounds in one week is crazy. I dropped 8 pounds in my first two weeks. I'd just call it 6.5 pounds a week and not worry. Very likely our lovely womanly hormones coming in to play. This is exactly why I count my monthly loss and don't freak out about daily losses and gains.

You're on the right path. Loss will come. Unless you're at your body's perfect weight already. Do you have a lot to lose or only a few pounds?

I lost 14 pounds this month total. A good week of that in the middle was holding steady and not losing anything. It eventually came off. It will. Cheer up! :)

Don't be discouraged, especially as women our weight goes all over the place. We retain water during our cycles and especially during shark week. Stick to the plan and it will all "woosh" one day and fall off. I understand it sucks to see a plateau but we all go through it I promise.

You also might be gaining muscle and losing inches as well so yes take your measurements, do a face to face comparison and check your ring size.. when I started I lost weight in my fingers of all places, lmao. Belly fat comes off last for me. It comes off where it wants to come off unfortunately. Every couple of weeks I go into stores and try on jeans just to see if I'm fitting into any new sizes, sometimes I'm surprised and treat myself to a new pair of jeans a size down!

You got this, keep it up!

I love NSV fitting into smaller clothes have become more important to me. As long as my stick registers my ketones and my inches melts away I am happy.

I highly recommend you to measure yourself, you'll be amazed when you don't drop a pound yet you lost inches that week. Such a fab feeling.

I'm in the same boat as you. I did keto back in March/April and dropped like 18 lbs in 3 weeks with 10+ of it being in the first week. That was primarily water weight, probably 8lbs I would attribute to water. I stopped doing keto out of laziness until about 3 weeks ago. I was eating a lot of carbs and gained a few pounds back (like 5 lbs), both fat and water. This time around starting keto again 3 weeks ago, I dropped about 3 lbs in the first two weeks but I'm confident that was the water I gained back. My stomach is completely flat from the side (as in not bloated, of course I still have muffin tops and other fat). I know most of my water weight is gone which means of the 5 lbs I gain while I was out of keto, about 2 lbs of it was fat. It's taking me much longer to lose weight this go around because I don't have a ton of water to lose and also probably because I have been less strict with my carbs (doing 25-35 g per day as opposed to strictly under 30 g).

As for TOM. My weight completely stalls or even increases due to added water retention. After TOM passes I see those lbs shed plus some.

I notice my feet and hands first. I can see veins that weren't there before and my shoe size always goes down when I lose weight. and the other week I noticed my socks have a space on the sides of my ankles now because of the fat being gone...

Don't be so hard on yourself. Dr. Westman calls a plateau a 3-4 week time period.

    Hang in there @_tierachanel!

A lot of patience is needed with this WOE but the rewards are great. I am relatively near my goal weight and was recently frustrated with a stall of more than 4 weeks. But, then suddenly 1.5 lbs. came off and more importantly, when I measured, I found that I had lost a full inch off my extremely stubborn waist.

2nd week plateau after a big loss first week was always considered a classic pattern when I was doing Atkins - Atkins even wrote about the common no loss week either 2nd or 3rd week of induction.

You drop that much weight in a week your body starts wondering what on earth is going on. It just needs a week to consolidate your loss and things should start to move again.

Even on a medical diet of 400 calories a day I had weeks of no loss where my body was catching up with itself. Don't take extreme measures or try emergency hacks, just keep going and you'll be fine.
