Can low carb trigger migraines?

  • Another thing, I do notice each migraine seems more bearable that the one before. The first one this week was bad. The aura was bad too. The next was a little less then the most recent a little less still. So I'm not writing this electrolyte thing off just yet. Maybe the decreasing severity is a sign that I am heading in the right direction? We'll see. I also hope this posts is helpful to someone else who may be having a similar situation.

    I still suggest looking into histamine intolerance. A lot of the foods we eat when going low carb can have more of this than previous foods. We're eating more aged foods, batch cooking and eating leftovers, or eating foods that are smoked/cured, etc. Adding in darker chocolate (can amplify the effects) and more naturally probiotic foods (again, aging, and natural fermentation amplify things). I was shocked when I realized that my favorite foods were contributing.

    And with histamines, it is typically a threshold thing... So the trigger wouldn't always be easy to identify. I might have a high food at breakfast, and am amplifying food late in the day, and then be triggered, or I might have a lot late at night, then a very lightly histamine food for breakfast and trigger then... So the biggest problem foods can be offset by 12 hours from the trigger...

    I'm sure other foods/sensitivities that are not histamine related can work in similar fashion, which is why it can take a while to find the triggers. I'd track foods ALL DAY - and just look for similarities in the 24 hour periods prior to an onset...

    Yes, I am going to do a process of elimination. Unfortunately it can take some time to discover which of the many possible triggers is the guilty one. I assume they are all guilty until proven innocent. LOL! But since I already started with the electrolyte and possible menstrual cycle I am going to stay the course and see how those pan out first. I did find a very good page that has quite a list of foods that can cause (what I will refer to as) the histamine headache. I think when I get to that point I will just eliminate everything on the list and after about 2 weeks reintroduce them one by one to see what happens.
