Binge and other issues...

I am pretty new to this WOE and had problems on the weekend to not give in to temptation. Temptation won unfortunately and I totally binged an everything carb in my way... Feel awful today... I am doing 5%carb, 20% protein and 75%fat. Am 3 pounds (1.5kgs) up from my lowest weight since start keto 3 weeks ago.

I do feel great while doing keto, it helps with my migraines and my insulin spikes, but having problems maintaining it. I do eat (red) meat, but come from a family of vegetarians, hence feel super guilty and crappy eating so much meat. How do you cope with this? What kind of veggie options could I use?

Thanks for all your input...

I'd up my sodium and good fats like avocado and olive oil. It's often recommended to eat maintenance calories a couple of weeks to get hunger down first before attempting fat loss while lowcarb. Once you have lesser appetite, losing fat is easier. I think people often "feel hungry" when it's more an electrolytes imbalance. Sodium helps vs fake hunger. Good luck!

thanks those are good ideas. I think I really should up my calories till keto sets in and I don't feel so hungry any more. I'll try to eat more salt too, it's just hard, to overcome the belief that too much salt is bad for you...

I think that we need to eat more salt on a low carb regime otherwise we can be tempted by salty carby foods - for me that means salted peanuts and cashews.

Be careful with cashews if you are VLC as they are the highest carb nut choice I believe - 9 g per ounce with only 1 of fiber.

Chia and flax are loaded with fiber and a good amount of protein, If you'd like non meat supplementation. There also always tofu...

I was a long time vegetarian and this year was a strict vegan for about 6 months. I also feel a bit uncomfortable eating so much animal proteins. I do love the taste, but it's the practices behind animal ag that squigs me out.

I don't think eating vegan was healthy for my body though - I was tired, gained weight and more even though I tried very carefully to eat a "balanced" diet. I also have to be careful eating too much soy because I have a thyroid problem and certain types of foods like soy aren't good for thyroid health. To top it off, I also have celiac disease so I can't eat many other meat alternatives because they contain gluten fillers.

When I get closer to my goal weight, I hope to incorporate more veg days into the week. Have you looked at some of the "pegan" sites for recipes/protein ideas? They could be adapted...just a thought.

Never heard of pegan, off to google :-).
I think I too need to do it your way, get more veg in, when reaching goal weight...

Being vegan and keto is very hard. Struggling as well. Now in China for 2 weeks so impossible to log food and follow LCHF. Which sucks bc all crappy feelings of bloat and cravings have returned.

Before leaving for China I ate:

Bok choy!!! Very very low carb
    Veggies
    Tofu (sprouted )
Tempeh is too high in carb but once in while
    Kelp
    And lots of healthy fats

My weakness was nuts!! Cashews are high In carb so stuck to walnuts macadamia and pecans. Still they were so calorie dense!

Carbs were still under 50 net but barely. The lower the better and less cravings and hunger I felt but you had to stick it out over that jump for a few days for your body to quick in and insulin is under control.

Also, look into the nutrient profiles of the things you are binging on and the things you feel like you are missing the most. There might be a key nutrient you knocked out by eliminating some higher carb foods.

I've found that things I had no idea I was missing include iodine, selenium, zinc, a number of amino acids, and stomach acid support, of all things. Additionally, the more I'm digging back into the nutrient side of things - dropping these within a lot of the higher carb foods I was eating, plus the drastic drop in insulin, they kind of ganged up on and slowed/stalled my thyroid function out (already I was hypothyroid on medication, but this just dropped the bottom out, so to speak). It's taken me 18 months, but I'm pretty much back to full function there now, pending confirmation tests on Friday and the related appointment with my endocrinologist.
