This thread is for GOADies who like to run. New runners, old runners, and even wannabe runners meet here to discuss the joys and challenges of running. Use this space to log your miles, ask questions, share your race reports, or for anything else related to running.

New runners - and even those just thinking about starting out - are always welcome. There's no reason to lurk here. Join the pack and tell us about your running!

Oftentimes the GotR thread will pose a question or raise an issue in order to facilitate the conversation, but this is always an open forum to chat about any running-related topic.

Today's Topic: What gets in the way of running? What life events or life happenings cause you to shelf running because you feel you need to devote more time to something else?

As stated the other day, I finally passed my cert exam. I felt that the 2 hours in a day that it usually took me from start to finish in order to run were hours that needed to be spent studying. Now I am trying to get my kitten motivated again to go back out and run. I know that I will have to get back at it a little slower after the layoff. But with the cert out of the way, I really want to dive headlong back into resuming all my WL goals.

@gadgetgirlIL - Thank you! I am happy to have passed and I am just as happy that it is over with.

No run on Sunday. Napped instead. It was also needed. Will try and get cranked back up Tuesday morning with a nice, easy 2 mi run/walk.

Getting in physical activity is so high up on my list that it has to be something dramatic to cause me to not run at all. Slamming my body into the asphalt during a bike ride in September comes to mind. I couldn't run for a few weeks, but I was able to stay active in other ways.

I'm more likely to cut down on the duration of runs rather than not do them at all. A 30 minute run/walk session on the treadmill helps me maintain some baseline of running fitness as I will run faster on the treadmill than left to my own devices outside. Having said that, I only ran twice last week since work and a volunteer project got in the way of running this past weekend. I still got in a brisk walk on the treadmill on Saturday and 10 miles of bike riding on Sunday.

This week I will run tomorrow, Thursday, and then I have a 1/2 marathon on Saturday. 3 times a week is my usual running frequency.

Long days at work are my obstacle. I can work around it to a point by shifting workout days and planning ahead. I don't know if it would make a huge difference in reality, but I think if I had a shower available at the office I'd be more likely to take a break from work to exercise then return to my desk. Our landlord's rep at the office says that's more of an "A" type amenity and our building is a "B." I say "give me a B quality shower! Come on . . . we'll go to Menard's and I'll help pick it out!"

Good weekend of running. A little bit of speedwork on Friday, 8 mile long run yesterday. Today is a rest day. I'm starting to feel some irritation in my knee as I attempt to ramp up my miles. Hopefully it'll pass. Nothing too extraordinary yet but some definite "runner's knee" type patella irritation.

I skipped the 2-3 miles that were on my schedule yesterday. I'm thinking it makes sense to just let that one go and see if a little less running helps the discomfort I noted in my knee. It does seem like it on paper, but listening to my body tells me I'm probably ramping up a little to quickly.

Any Turkey Trots in anyone's plans?

No formal turkey trot, just my own DIY one so that I can get home in time to start cooking the turkey.

Weather should be dry tomorrow. It is drizzling here today which makes it feel colder than it really is.

I've gone back and forth, but I think I'm going to skip the racing and run on my own too. I need to run out to the airport around noon tomorrow. It'll be easier if I skip the crowds. DS-2 and his GF are going to the large Lifetime Turkey Day 5K thingy in downtown Minneapolis. There's no way I was going to sign on for that madness! I tried and failed to get them to join me in the sweet little local race. Kids. ;-)
