Hi all! What are your favorite workouts outside of the barn?
My hands down favorite is hiking and I'd like to try skiing and snowshoeing this winter.
I also enjoy yoga, pure bare, weights and Pilates.

the one positive thing to come from a broken toe is that I found the rowing machine! It has been great for my posture and the muscles between my shoulder blades! My position has improved (I really noticed it yesterday during my jump school) and half halts have become more effective. Plus, I can burn as many calories in the same amount of time rowing as I do when I run. I'm addicted now!1

@cessi0909 I also love yoga and pilates and weights...I need to get back into running but the weather is so yuck up here in Ontario.
@crimsongrey The rowing machine rocks! So good for the core! If you think about it, it's like working 10,000 massive continuous half halts haha2 -
I have a love/hate relationship with my treadmill. I also have a young german shephard that loves walks. I too would like to try snow shoeing this year... I try and do 2 triathlons in the summer depending on the show schedule.1

Strength training/weight lifting. I really like the way I can see the changes.1

I'm hooked on yoga. It's a great match for riding because it works balance, flexibility and strength. I have a program on my iPad that lets me chose length and focus of my session. Also go to a studio once a week. Dog walking is mandatorytoo...just ask my dog.1

Kickboxing! Just started a few months ago but it's definitely my favorite. I also run on the treadmill with my Couch to 5K program that I never finish, I just start it over occasionally, after I miss too many days at the gym. I also love weightlifting and yoga. Well, I don't LOVE yoga, I get impatient. But I love how it improves my flexibility and stretchiness.
@crimsongrey I agree about the rowing, it's a great way to exercise. When I sprained my ankle I had to be non-weight bearing for six weeks, so my workout trainer set a chair over the rower, and I was able to row without putting any weight on my ankle. It was genius and I was able to keep doing cardio. The only other alternative was the crank cycle. I hate the crank cycle.2 -
haha @moody_equestrian, I'm the same with yoga! I was trying so hard to not look at my watch during class yesterday. Seriously, the stretching part is great, but how long do I have to hold this pose...I've got stuff to do0

@cessi0909 Yoga is my go to if I feel a strain or my hamstrings are screaming at me.
@moody_equestrian I have never tried kickboxing, but it sounds fun. I have a workout that is called MMX and I do a lot of kicking and punch moves and until I got it figured out I would almost punch myself in the face, but it is definitely a good workout.
@OMGeeeHorses the balance ball is definitely a core workout. I do have a workout DVD that uses the balance ball and it is GREAT!
@luckypony71 weights are definitely a must for me too, I need to stay strong for when I'm training horses.
@showjumper I love snow shoeing!!! That is definitely a cardio workout!!!
I have a bunch of workout DVD's that I plug in and mix it up which keeps me from getting bored with my workouts.2 -
@tmcoyle I know what you mean! I used to do boot camp workout classes at the gym with the same instructor who teaches kickboxing. This was before I took KB classes, and I am super uncoordinated. So yes, I grazed my own chin a couple of times. Felt so silly, but I've come to realize no one is watching. Lol.

@tmcoyle @moody_equestrian Have either of you heard of 30 min hit....... it is a good work out too if you are into paying another membership (which I wasn't, too bad as I really enjoyed it)1

As you can probably guess from my profile picture, I am an aerialist. I take aerial silks and pole classes plus the occasional Lyra or cube class. I love it. It has done so much for my core and upper body strength. I also lift weights and I am starting belly dance next month.1

@showjumper no, I haven't but I will check it out, thanks!0

@Mouse_Potato that is amazing, how long have you been doing the aerial work? I am pretty jealous right now, lol!

I've been doing pole for almost five years now, but I just started silks last May. It's so much fun!
I am also a C25K serial starter. I make it all the way through the 20 minute jog and then life gets in the way!0 -
