Up I go AGAIN! Bleh. I like to tell myself it's weight lifting and all the walking making the muscles in my legs hard as rocks, lol.
Pickle juice, huh? Well, I like pickles so that shouldn't be too yucky for me. I'll give it a try. Sarah, the night I got the cramp in my thigh, I did yell and moan and almost cry. Woke hubby up. I couldn't even walk. He helped me with water, supplements, banana, etc., and grabbing my leg to stretch it out. So painful! The neighbors must wonder what the heck we've got going on over here in the middle of the night, ha ha.
I'll be watching the news today, Sarah, to hear a story about your report that you've worked so hard on. Good work.
Lois, hope you get the heater fixed soon. What a pain. Our house is ten years old since last June, and we've started to have issues with everything around here. Hubby had to find some parts for the dishwasher. Had a repairman come out to look at my washer . . turns out it's more expensive to fix than to buy a new washer. Luckily, I can keep using it, but it makes terrible noises. I just shut the door. No new washer until next year. My carpet is looking sad in a few areas, but I'll go for cleaning in January, and wait a while longer. We had to buy a new router for internet. . not installed yet. And, I would love a new mattress some day soon. Holy house expenses!

Honestly--watch what you wish for. I said I wanted to not gain over the holidays, but I MEANT that I want to lose a little until the week of Christmas and then hang on through New Year's Day. I guess I wasn't clear about that! LOL
Houses--oh, yes. We call it having the wheels fall off. Things always go wrong in batches and it's always something. Our house was built in 1972, so we've gone through several of those replacing everything cycles.
Same thing with the cars. At least yesterday our mechanic, who we've known for years, took pity on us. We've spent $3000 at his shop in the past couple of months, so he didn't charge us for looking at the idiot light. (It was reacting to changes in tire pressure due to huge temperatures swings.) But in a few minutes, we have a carpenter coming to take some measurements so he can give us an estimate for doing some work in the basement.
And beds? We have a very expensive mattress and box spring on the guest bed that has been slept on less than 10 times. We got that because of my sisters' back issues. But our bed? We have an old mattress on our bed and we just have to replace it soon. We keep putting it off because our tastes have changed and we also want to replace the bedroom furniture. And if we do that, then we should also replace the master sitting room furniture. Mission creep!
Thankfully, today was not as hectic as Monday and yesterday, but I started worked work at 7:30 a.m. simply out of fear of what might come. It usually takes a few days for reactions in the field and by the public, and I expect that things will ramp up again on Monday when all the staff are back in Atlanta. There are a lot of people up here today. Thank God we live far enough out of the city that they don't just get the idea that they'll pop around to say hello!0 -
Ok ladies....so after a four hour wait for the guy, he showed up at 930 and left well after I went to bed at 11:15pm. I left hubby in charge. About 130 I woke up with no blankets and in a sweat with the hot air BLASTING!!! so I had hubby adjust the thermostat (set to 72 UGH) back to 67. All became well with the world. While hubby adjusted the thermostat I unplugged the space heater to ensure it didn't run more electricity. Yeah, woke up at 430ish FREEZING and completely under the covers...the hot air that was blasting was now blasting COLD air...and I have fans going in the bedroom, so that just was pushing that nice chilly air even faster! hahaha. So yeah, no heat at the moment.
our house is 22 years old, HOWEVER, we've replaced this unit TWICE in the past six years (the handler portion last WINTER and the compressor portion (outside) just this past spring so both are very very new, covered under warranty (thank GOD) and should be working smooth as silk.
Mattresses,...wow ...yeah. about seven years ago we bought two queen mattress sets for our two spare bedrooms, They are rarely slept on for any length of time, so we've begun rotating them into our room to delay replacing our 20 year old mattress set (that I still LOVE the firmness and I do sleep the best on that one out of all of them).
I'm ready to sell this house and move into an apt and let someone else deal with this crap. And yeah, I'm about ready to cry....things have got to settle down and soon.
Oh and my boss just signed with the nutritionist I want to sign up with in January, just a bit jelly that she's starting with her first. (imagine a pouty face here - haha).
OK...gotta finish some stuff so I can be ready to go when the repair guy can meet me at the house and then I have to work from home.0 -
From Wednesday though yesterday, I sat at my desk from before daylight until almost bedtime everyday. Thus my low, low steps. But I knew this would happen and I had gone into acceptance long before it came down the pike. But I had not included in my plan what happened last night.
Hubby had to go to a mandatory staff meeting following by a holiday party at his company's headquarters. They're allowed to bring a guest, but the event starts at 4 p.m. and it's more than an hour's drive, so I usually don't go. In fact few working spouses do. Hubby himself hates to go because it's a drink fest held in the same bar and grill (really!) every year because it's the favorite watering hole of the CFO. Those who don't want get hammered and spend the night in a nearby hotel (boss pays for the rooms) usually eat and get out of there as quick as they can.
Anyway, he was stuck there and there was nothing healthy and quick to eat in the house, so I ran out into the bitter cold (26 degrees with wind whipping) to get some sushi and fruit. When I came out of the grocery store, another car had parked very close to mine, so getting in with my purse and bag required a bit of contortionism. And as I did this, I felt a pain go through my lower back.
I guess I pulled a muscle. I took aleve as soon as I got home, but it didn't do much for the pain. I woke up several times during the night--realizing that it was the pain in my back that woke me up. I actually skipped my thyroid medicine this morning so I could take more aleve. I'll do the synthroid later. But now I'm wondering whether I'll be able to achieve any make-up steps this weekend. I'm pretty sure it's muscular--which is the only bright spot. I now know that nerve pain feeling really well, and this is different. But all I can say is RATS, RATS, RATS!!
Lois, I hope that your HVAC issues are soon resolved. The morning Post said that Phoenix's high today will be around 73, so hopefully that will give you a window of comfortable temps to get everything checked out and running again. We're bracing for an artic blast. Today the high downtown will be about 40 and we're usually about 3-4 degrees cooler. Mid- to high 30s with sun I can manage. But by the end of next week, we're likely to not get above freezing at all.
As I read our recent posts, I'm amazed at how we juggle similar issues and share similar wishes. That's the reason I always feel supported by your posts and appreciate hearing about what you do to try to stay healthy and fit and about your successes and challenges.
My plan for the coming week is (a) survive more long work hours and walk every chance I get, and (b) eat more fresh things. I'm actually almost craving fruit and vegetables after a week of eating meals based more on meat and starches. (Because that's what hubby likes! LOL)
By the way, how is Kelly doing? She seems to have moved entirely to Facebook.

By our posts, I meant all of us.
I popped in again to log the cookies I ate. I know--I shouldn't have. I think my brain is setting me up by saying, "you're tired, it's cold, your back hurts, comfort yourself with that big old oatmeal raisin cookie!" There have been chocolate chip cookies here all week. I never even think of them. Oatmeal raisin--another story. But since I did eat two of them, I am now going to go to the mall to test out the back. It's feeling a little better this afternoon.0 -
Oh no Sarah!! I hope the Aleve kicks in soon.
thank goodness the weather was awesome this weekend. And, if it weren't for my mother in law, we wouldn't even be thinking of the house heater. Ha. The part should be here today - fingers are crossed that it will work this evening. We do have some warmer weather due this week, but later in the week, it is supposed to drop and oh Lordy.
I picked up mom at the airport (got in my 10k PLUS waiting for her plane), and while she was in a wheelchair for airport transport, I was seriously alarmed at how hard of a time she had to stand...and then again when we got home and she got out of the car...she had to stand for several minutes (i went back and forth taking in luggage and the grandkids and food before she was able to walk. And this was the challenge EVERY time she stood. Her cali lifestyle is not benefiting her strength and mobility. She got in 2k steps yesterday, but she was holding something the entire time and getting up from sitting was painful to watch. At almost 82, I'm unsure what muscle improvement we can gain in four visits to PT, if she even wants to go. I was in tears at how far she's degraded. And then I blew up when my son asked her what she wanted for Christmas "my car...I need my car". REALLY!?!?! I realize we've taken away part of her independence, but damn, she can barely move....and we're to allow her to drive a car? I don't want to get in a car with her behind the wheel, let alone subject other unknown commuters/families/pedestrians to be exposed to her behind the wheel. Oh Lordy...and it's only been two days.
We did have the grandkids Sat and Sun. We had a great time. Hubby and Cameron (who's going to be 9 in February) played this role playing game called Munchkin for over two hours. Cam just loves to play that game with grandpa. Before moving to AZ, I worked for a family company and a portion of hte company was devoted to creating board games. We developed Outburst, Taboo and quite a few others. One them was also in conjunction with Disneyland and Parker Bros. The game only had two runs printed, but I did manage to get two of them way back in 1990. well, Kelsie (who's almost five) and I played that game for almost an hour. Oh my goodness, she had so much fun going in circles "around the park". We didn't count points, but she got so excited at EVERY move, pick a card, pick a star, turn the clock...oh we had a fantastic time. We also walked our neighborhood to see the decorated houses (another 2k steps - woot woot). Sunday morning, sadly, Kelsie woke with a fever and ended up sleeping on the couch all day long. She drank some pedialyte and had an aspirin, but otherwise she was down. Cameron on the other hand, had grandpa's undivided attention and got to go out back and play with the "throwing knives" in the backyard.
We took the kids back and then I came home and began to prepare food for the week. Salad, hamburgers for lunch for me (no buns) and taco meat for huby and MIL. I was going to recreate one of my Hello Fresh dinners, but realized I failed to buy chicken, so it may be fish for dinner if I don't stop on my way home tonight. I need to focus on positive intake and keeping myself moving and calm.
back and neck are still out of whack, but I have my annual physical on Thursday....unsure that's smart to keep with the MIL added frustration, but I need to see him about the neck and back so, fingers are crossed for an average type of visit and reaction.0 -
Lois, your description of your MIL does bring back memories. My mother had an extreme case of spinal stenosis that came on suddenly when she was in her late 70s and within a few years totally crippled her. I remember her struggling to stand up with her walker and then having to stand still for a few minutes before she could move. It always frustrated me that she didn't do what the doctors recommended, i.e., walk around the house to keep her muscles from just deteriorating.
For several years, she continued to drive. Her mind was sharp but I still worried about her reaction time. She had a light weight walker that she used when she was out of the house, and she would put it in the trunk and then hold to the side of the car to get to the drivers' seat. But finally when she had to get her driver's license renewed, they told her that she had to be able to walk from the entrance of the DMV lobby up to the counter in order to be able to get the license renewed. And although we hoped that might encourage her to move more, she simply started giving up at that point. One of the saddest memories I have is her next to last Christmas when we tried to get her into our SUV to go to my aunt's for Christmas brunch. Our older SUV was great for her because it was hip height and she could just back up to the back seat edge and slide in. Our newer one was about three inches taller, and getting her in that one took two people, and I know it hurt her--physically as well as emotionally. Damn it--getting old is so hard!
But on a happier note, hubby went walking with me in the mall last night. He complained about a foot hurting, but he did it.We timed it so we could be there during the time that people could bring pets to have their picture made with Santa. If you haven't figured it out, I love animals, and although we have cats, I get a big kick out of seeing people bringing in the pooches wearing their Christmas outfits. Because it's out of the ordinary, the atmosphere is different. There are a lot of animal rescue volunteers there, too, giving out materials, and a lot of stores have treats and water bowls for furry customers. It's kind of whacky and festive. So before I realized it, my fitbit was vibrating. Yeah! And then we drove around and looked at Christmas lights--one of my favorite things to do. Since we are going to be here and a bit at loose ends, we may go to see the lights at the Mormon Tabernacle this year, which we haven't done in several years, or we may go see the zoo lights downtown, which we've never done.
My weight still seems to be up a little (142.2 this morning). This is probably the result of three extremely long and stressful work days last week. I looked at my reports here on MFP for the past 30 days and I only had a few days that I was over the mark with net calories, but more than half of the time (19 out of 30), I was over with calories that don't take into account the extra allotment for activity added back. I think my goal has to be to reduce the number of days that the non-net calories are below the line since on most days I have more control over my intake than the amount of time I have for activity.
Have a happy Monday everyone. Hope the week goes well for us all.0 -
Finally got time to log on and read your posts. Darn, the neck and back problems! And I really feel your MIL pain, Lois. So many of the things you mention bring back memories for me. . immobility, surgeries, taking away drivers licenses, then having to drive them everywhere (and still go to work), doing all their shopping, on and on. It's really hard. But, my blessing was that I have a sister here who didn't work at a job who helped a LOT, and then two brothers
Well, one brother sent his landscaping company to do the yard every week, so that was helpful. Anyway, aging parents and parents-in-law can be challenging to say the least. But, when they're gone, that's even harder.
I've been wrapping Christmas gifts in between jogging/walking outside, on the treadmill, around the house ALL THE TIME! I'm at 1,906.80 miles (not counting today). So, pray that I don't pull a muscle or have an emotional breakdown . . and I just might make it to 2,016 before my kids all come for the holiday.
I'm really frustrated today because of flaw in a beautiful Kate Spade Bag I ordered for a daughter. I took it out of the bag and wrapping (ordered it online) and it has a flaw of glue on it!!! I called, and they don't have any more of that bag. I'm going to have to get out shopping AGAIN tomorrow. ARGH!! I thought I was done. Ah well.
Sarah, I can't answer about Kelly. I still have my Facebook de-activated. I'm assuming she is busy with her cute BF and the holidays. I hope she comes back after the first of the year. Glad you and hubby got to walk together. Did you get a Santa photo with your kitties? I'd love to see that!
I'm sending you both healing back and neck vibes. See you on the FitbitAnd, I'll weigh-in on Wed.
