Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Wednesday -- minimyzeme (Kim)

Today's topic: What's your "Up On the Roof"?
James Taylor recorded this song and the first set of lyrics is as follows:
"When this old world starts a getting me down,
and people are just too much for me to face.
I'll climb way up to the top of the stairs and all my cares just drift right into space.
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be and there the world below don't bother me, no, no."
Even though I know I need to face my problems instead of burying them in food like I used to, from time to time I need to just take a break from it all. Maybe you need a break from time to time as well. So what is your equivalent to going "Up On The Roof"?

I went "Up On The Roof" last Sunday morning when I got out to the arboretum right when it opened so that I could snowshoe on the fresh snow that had fallen overnight. I went well off the regular trails and didn't see another soul, just some squirrels. It was exactly what I needed as I had just come off of a hectic week at work and my anxiety was building due to my looming cataract surgery.
Getting out in nature, preferably hiking or snowshoeing, really helps to calm my anxious mind. I can face my problems better when I'm working from a place of calm instead of anxiety.0 -
not to be a nitpicker but the James Taylor version was a cover of a song originally done by the Drifters in 1962, and then covered by Carole King in 1970. (The James Taylor cover was in 1979)0

I too, gain inner peace and renewal by isolating myself in nature. I am blessed to live halfway between Olympic and Mt. Rainier National Parks, and within driving range of more than a half dozen wilderness areas. A day on the trail keeps me grounded and positive toward life.
When I can't get out on the trail, I head to my shop and make sawdust. Even small woodworking projects ease stress. The hours just seem to flow by when I am out there. My DW has to come out to remind me to eat.0 -
@cakeman21k - I didn't say he wrote it, just recorded it, as did several others.0

This is something I have to reacquire. I've overeaten for so long that that most of my free time was watching TV and eating snacks. I still watch a lot of TV, but the snacking is cut way back.0

When I get overwhelmed I schedule a "Me Day". I let my SO know when it is so that way he knows I'm setting aside a day where I do only what I want, when I want. I usually hole up in a room in our house with a new book, a few Netflix shows, and my yoga DVDs. Since I'm a strong introvert it's incredibly refreshing to have a day where I don't have to interact with anyone. Since moving to a more rural area of the state I've only taken 2 of these this year. Honestly I think stepping away from traffic and corporate stress has been the best thing for me.0

This a.m. I walked in the frozen snow and ice to the wetlands where lo and behold there was a great blue heron about 10 feet away standing in the water by the snow. Getting outside is for sure my "roof". My trusty yaktrax kept me upright.0

I am an outdoors lover. So, I really like something that lets me connect to the natural world. I find my center much more quickly that way.0

I get into a good positive book of some sort. It always helps my attitude and keeps my attitude going in the right direction up.0

Thank you! I was going to post the same thing. I was 14 years old when that song first came out
And Carole King co-wrote the Drifters' original version
Not a nitpicker here either and love James Taylor (Carolina on My Mind) but like to give credit where credit's due.0 -
Spend time with the Guide Dog Foundation puppy that I'm raising.0

Call my sister. She lives in MN and I'm in VA so we don't see each other much. She is a good listener and we can gab about "nothing" for an hour. That always cheers me up.
PS: I was listening to James Taylor's Christmas CD this week. :-)0 -
Another outdoor lover though have spent too much time 'up on the roof' this week! We got about 3 ft of snow in as many days. Today it's supposed to spike into the 40s and rain(!) before going back to snow tomorrow. 3 ft of ice on the roof? No thanks!
However, with the exception of clearing snow, I'm another wetland guy, like @podkey . I have seen some great bird / animal behavior out there and sometimes have been fortunate enough to photograph it. It definitely takes my mind off eating!0 -

Don't forget my offer @minimyzeme to show you the ropes on the Mississippi River. Eagle season starts in about two weeks.

Awesome shot, @goldenfrisbee ! I'd love to join you sometime but may have to wait 'til I move somewhere warm and can 'get away' during the winter. If I had not been around to clear snow from the roof the last few days, I think the house would be worse for wear today!0

I'm another that loves the outdoors.
For me, another thing that can help me "take a break from it all", can be journaling; either a gratitude list, or actually letting myself journal/vent about "it all" and my thoughts and feelings that arise. It can be easier to let go of that, after I've put pen to paper.0 -
@goldenfrisbee that is an awesome shot!!
We have a fair number of bald eagles here in the Portland-Vancouver area. I love watching them. One time, I saw a pair of bald eagles watch an osprey fishing at the ocean. As soon as the osprey caught a fish, the eagles swooped in to bully him into dropping the catch. The osprey dropped the fish, and the eagles were unable to catch it. The fish got away, which I hoped would be a lesson to the eagles about bullying.

Another outdoors person...be it in nature or just walking around a city...I love outdoors and spending time there always makes me feel at peace. I like solitude but I also am a people watcher, so depending on why I'm in need will determine what I seek out.
My 2nd quicker to get to "roof" is my dog, that girl can put a smile on my face anytime. She's very intuitive and knows when I need her. We start everyday with her waking us up by putting her nose on my husbands hand and pushing -- she's happy, talking, doing the kidney bean move (she's a boxer they twist their bodies and dance around) -- when we had two boxers we they would just call us from the bottom of the steps and when we'd look done the dance would start...I called it Christmas morning everyday!1
