Yoga? Hey, why not?

At spin today - where I was dressed as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer mind you - I was grousing that I didn't think I was getting stronger at spin. The trainer suggested I add a yoga class or 2 to my roster - to which I said, why not?

Excellent!! I sure like it now. I never did before. Finding the right teacher, the right style, and being "ready" to like it helped. I'm stronger and much more flexible than I was when lifting weights.

I just bought some yoga dvd's and really need to get my butt in gear and start doing them! I've done yoga before... waaaaay back in the day... I think it was a Raquel Welch yoga dvd... anyway, I loved it. I never felt like I was getting much of a workout while doing it but I couldn't believe how sore I could get afterwards! It really got me in shape.

    Mostlywater: have you started yoga?
For those who do it at home: have you practiced in a studio before and are continuing on your own? Or did you start with DVDs? I'm just now looking at online yoga for an addition to my "routine".

My yoga "journey" started in my 20s. I HATED it. (class)

Tried it again in my 30s and meh. (class)

tried it again around 40 with a few friends and *liked it*. (class)

Told myself it was a good "addition" to my work outs and might *help* my meno symptoms a year or so ago and forced myself to try a few teachers at a few studios. FINALLY one CLICKED!
I love her. LOVE. It's like "Yoga for sabine!" everything I ever wanted yoga to be.

It's very strength based (a vinyasa flow, but with ab work and push ups and squats and...)
since then I've also attended a few Yin classes (long long slow slow poses) and a few regular vinyasa and other classes.

Right now I'm doing my regular classes with MY teacher 2-3 times a week, and am also doing a separate "yoga for strength" series with HER, AND a sunday yin class with someone else at the same place.
(and a mat Pilates class, which I love and have been doing for years) twice a week.

Yoga I pay for by the month, and Pilates is a "benefit" of my job (I teach in a university).

About....a few months...after discovering MY teacher, I stopped lifting weights in a gym after 20 years. This IS my weights (for now, anyway). I love how functionally strong, and flexible I feel. and I love that MY teacher (I'm so possessive of her!) pushes me to try new things each day. I'm just getting started as far as I'm concerned!

TL;DR: I hope everyone tries yoga with a live teacher, at least for a while, and hope everyone finds a teacher who fits them, and tries different types of yoga.

    cheers!

    Well?

Reminding: I hated yoga in my 20s
disliked it a lot but tried it off and on from 30-49.
Love it since 49 or so.

I'm not your typical yogi and don't love MOST forms.
I want either: weights! kick my *kitten*! or: "relax, stretch, mend". Nothing in between.

Well, the decision was made FOR me.

First of all, the only classes available to me are Vinyasa, which are NOT beginner's classes. 2ndly, I prefer an abs class which I took several times but now is changing to Tabata so that's not available to me any longer.

Starting Thursday, I do part of a Pilates class during lunch. I'm not fond of that either, but I know what to expect!

I love my Pilates. and my Power flow class.
I HATE yoga at work. I think it's the teacher.

It's funny how pilates and yoga have a set bunch of exercises/poses, but the various teachers make it seem so different, huh?

Absolutely. The yoga class at work feels like the teacher's own practice, just in front of people. She does the same routine every Monday, Wednesday and Friday all year long.

My studio teacher builds each class around a final pose, with all poses leading up to it. She alternates upper body and lower body focus, and every class is focused on strength. I adore her.

My Pilates teacher goes to the national conference every year and comes back with new ideas and moves that she integrates into our class. It never gets boring.

I didn't get to pilates yesterday because the office was too busy. I only take half the class anyway. I'm still kind of grumpy about it.

I have VERY cute clothes that I wear to it !!!

My yoga/pilates teacher lets the class kind of dictate what we will do in terms of focus...so if some people want more balancing we will do more balancing, or if there are specific areas that need more flexibility she will work in poses for that...it makes every class a bit different from the previous ones depending on who is there and how they are feeling that particular day...it definitely takes an amazing instructor to get the most out of yoga.
