when did your hair loss stop?

Hi there,
So it's been quite some time since I last posted--coincidentally about a similar sort of topic! I'm about 10 1/2 months post op. Weight wise, things are good. I've lost 114 pounds since my surgery and feeling healthy. My weight loss has essentially stopped in the last few months so I think this is it.
However...my hair loss has NOT stopped and I see no sign of the hair returning. I had thin, fine hair to begin with, and now it's a disaster. I can do nothing to style it (I am allergic to scents and fragrance). Last haircut I had to listen to my hairdresser sigh and moan in sympathy at my lack of hair. I'm terrified I'm going to keep losing hair until I need a wig.
Advice, support, words of encouragement please...tell me the hair loss does stop, and it grows back!!

How is your diet? Where are your macros? (protein, carbs, fat) (Your profile is private, couldn't snoop)
At that far out, it should be stopping if it were from telogen effluvium (the shock of the surgery). That would lead me to believe (not a medical professional in any capacity...not even on TV) there is some kind of deficiency in your diet. Protein, vitamin D, iron, vitamin E, and trace minerals such as selenium, copper, and magnesium all affect the growth of hair. Diets too low in fat can also affect the growth cycle.
I'd definitely talk to my surgeon/bariatric office about getting labs done if you've not recently done that. I'd also ask them their opinion on the loss.
Good luck, if you need more help, I'd love to brainstorm if I could see your diary!

@autumn1031 - my surgery was 6 mos ago and I am still losing my hair BUT I found a product that has helped dramatically in the amount of hair I am losing - go to www.bariatriceating.com and go to their products tab. Get the Hair Balance vitamins - they are awesome. Plus my nails that are typically bendable are now hard!!! Check their stuff out. Their protein crunchers and powders are also awesome!2

I take 10,000 mcg of Biotin every day and it helped a lot with hair regrowth. I'm like you in that my hair was/is fine and frizzy and grows slowly. The biotin HAS helped, but it wasn't so significant that I can say I have awesome, luxurious hair or anything.
Actually, what I did was just embrace the change and take it a new direction. Previously, I was always self-conscious about keeping my hair too short because my face was so fat. I've lost so much weight now that I just went full pixie. I've never had my hair this short before and wasn't sure what I'd think about it, but I love it and get so many compliments on it. I'm seriously considering keeping this way, even if my hair starts growing back fuller now that my weight has evened out.1 -
@cmchandler74 SAME HERE! Thin, fine hair. When it first started to fall, one of my bffs is a stylist and insisted on chopping and lightening it up! Hence the short, blonde hair! I LOVE IT and don't wanna grow it out!0

Me three on the sassy, short hair! I, too, was always self conscious about wearing my hair too short.
I can't say definitively when my major hair loss stopped because it was so gradual...but I would say that it definitely correlated with my major weight losses stopped. By 6-9 months post-RNY, my monthly losses were in the single digits.
Definitely check your vitamin compliance. I use the Bariatric Advantage with Iron and all my labs have been amazing...even B and D that I've struggled with for years. The only blip I have right now is zinc but that is common with extreme weight loss.0 -
When I started losing hair I asked dietician and she said it happens with most bariatric patients and will stop eventually, rarely lasting more than a year. If you eat healthy and drink plenty of water there's not a lot you can do. The stuff about biotin and other vitamins helping isn't scientifically proven. I don't see any harm in it though either. Personally I think it's more of a placebo. Because you want to do "something", right?
Anyway, when it stops falling out you won't even notice. I didn't.0 -
Hmm, maybe I will check with my bariatric doctor/ nutritionist. I take my multi vitamins and other supplements (B-12, calcium, etc) daily, I also take 10,000 mcg of Biotin. I do struggle with getting to my protein count, because I can't tolerate most of the shakes/ supplements-- they make me VERY sick--so I try and get it through my diet. That has still been very hard. In the last 2 months my weight loss has slowed significantly, maybe a pound a week, and the hair loss does seem to be slowing...a little. I'll talk with my surgeon and see if I can test all of my numbers.0

I have virtually no hair. I have to keep it slicked back in a little kid's hair thing twisted 4 times and loop the hair because there is no pony tail to speak of. I've always had big, curly hair so this is a huge change for me. The doc said that some people have extreme hair loss. My labs are textbook perfect. I use nioxin and have for a year. I take 10,000 units of biotin religiously. I was told to check back with my doc in 3 months if I don't notice a change.
This has been pretty hard emotionally, but I wouldn't exchange hair for the old weight for all the money in the world lol. It happens...especially with fine hair.0 -
Try the Hair Balance from Bariatric Eating or Hair Anew which you can get on Amazon. I am 8.5 mos post op and probably stopped or dwindled a lot when it comes to hair loss. My hair dresser noticed my hair was growing back about a month ago when I saw her.0
