Bad breath?

Hello!
Im a sugar and carb addict, I cant restrict or I end up binging. Its all or nothing. I been doing LCHF about 6 weeks but the first 4 allowed myself a weekly splurge meal, it helped mentally to get past the weekly hump of "im gonna die without processed carbs" that my brain sends out. But as noted it always led to a binge. I didnt weight. I hate the scale, but that is another story. So I am on mfp this past week, I think 9 days or something. Being more accountable and saying NO to any planned treat as I know its just the begining of my self sabotoge. Im doing moderate LC because I enjoy fruit and vegs and nuts and atkins meals. But Im not doing it as NET so my NET carbs is likely 20-30. I only look at net if I have an atkins pizza because Im tired and my kids are having a frozen meal for dinner too. Those things yeah are high carbs but low net. Anyways Ive read keto can give you bad breath. Fruity? My breath is bad, like really bad, like do no come near me, I dont wanna be near me bad. I brush, I floss, I gargle. It helps for a short time. My bad breath is not fruity. Its like old meat bad. I read this will eventually go away? Pleas tell me it really will?

I had metal mouth and bad breath at the beginning. It did go away for me after a couple weeks. I think the smells (breath, pee, sweat) go away for most.1

bad breath is a symptom of being in ketosis. I am pretty strict at keeping to a net carb of around 8g per day and I haven't experienced this yet. but that could be what you are seeing?0

Make sure you are staying well hydrated. Being dehydrated can contribute to bad breath.0

The smell associated with ketosis is acetone. Imagine a sweet nail polish remover.
There are other possible sources of the smell of bad breath upon cutting carbs though.
High protein intake can create an ammonia scent and another possible source could be candida due off.2 -
I feel your pain. Been dealing with it myself. In the beginning I could definitely even feel myself that I had bad breath and my husband definitely confirmed it. Said it smelled exactly like acetone.....After a few weeks it didn't seem as bad to me, but hubby confirms it's still just as bad as ever to him.....So I'm hoping it will pass someday as well.0

It doesn't happen to everybody. I've never had any issues.0 -
I wanted to bump this. I did alot of research and self diagnosed my bad breath from the above mentioned candida due off. I had never ever heard of it before. Thank you @Sunny_Bunny_ for the mention. I started drinking lemon ginger tea daily, taking a probiotic, and using oregano and garlic more often. And ofc my LCHF diet is very similar to the recommended candida die off diet. My bad breath left after a couple days. It was pretty amazing to me thinking how my gut was infested with trillions of candida from yeast like carbs and now they are dieing.4

In addition to the good tips you already have, here are a couple thoughts.
There are lots of changes going on when you restrict carbs and calories, which is a pretty major change for your corporeal self.
Among other things, there are all sorts of good and evil elements we've locked up in our adipose tissue, and as we start burning fat, those elements get paroled and have to go somewhere.
Staying hydrated and regular should help show them the quickest way to the outside world.0 -

I'm so glad you found the fix for it. I hear the bad breath complaint often and it's pretty much widely accepted as just part of keto but it never made sense to me. The smell of ketones aren't what most people would call bad. Not in an offensive way. My T1D daughter won't even get a bad smell when her ketones are dangerously high from ketoacidosis. I can smell her ketones from several feet away and it's not even "bad" at that high concentration so I always suspect something else when I hear about it.
Most people just increase carbs and don't look into the other possibilities. You're experience could be super helpful to anyone else that mentions the issue.4 -

Nor I.2 -
I get the fruity acetone breath, but I also get the cat spray sweaty bits as well. It does go away when your body starts burning the ketones for fuel.0

I had keto breath for 4 straight months, and i ended up quitting because of it If i was single and never left the house then i would have kept low carbing, as i really enjoyed it!
The ironic thing is i haven't been keto since March 2015, but if my carbs get below 125ish, that keto breath comes rushing back, my hubby lets me know straight away! So it's like I've done some kind of permanent damage to myself and will forever have to keep my carbs UP instead of down. I had never suffered with bad breath in my life before going low carb..
One thing that helps nuke the breath is chlorophyll, either in liquid or tablet form. But be prepared to take it forever if your breath doesnt normalise.1 -
@Christine_72, have you tried non-traditional approaches?
YMMV, but I have found that eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat, and tongue of dog are pretty effective, though people in my FB group have found success with adder's fork, blind-worm's sting, lizard's leg, and howlet's wing.2 -

Let us know if it yields charm or hell-breath
(I wonder if turmeric and ACV would help or hinder....?)2
