High blood ketone readings

Hi everyone. I've been reading a lot about people struggling with getting their blood ketone readings above 0.5. I've been been consistently getting readings above 3.0. What does this mean exactly? Is my body not using these ketones? These results are always fasted and my blood sugar is always between 3.8- 4.6.

    You're testing blood ketones and not urine ketones?

    Typically, blood ketone readings will be higher for those newer to keto (under a year) and as your body gets more efficient at using them, the level will drop a bit. Unless you get over 10 and have high BG at the same time, there is nothing to worry about.

    That's a solid level of nutritional ketosis with great blood sugar.
    It means you're doing something right.

    @cstehansen is correct in mentioning that they will tend to be lower as you get more adapted.
    They also tend to be lowest in the morning and highest at night.
    There will be fluctuations all the time so don't think too much about any single reading.
    Trends would be more informative.
    But honestly, you don't even need to test. You know how to achieve ketosis so just keep doing that if that's your goal.

    I know both high blood sugar and blood ketones is ketoacidosis and a scary thing. I'm not really new to keto but I did stop for a bit and have only been back on for about a month and a half. Thanks for your insight :) I'll just keep monitoring I suppose and see what happens.

    ETA: When I was on a high carb standard American diet (SAD), my blood ketone levels ranged from 0.2 - 0.6 mmol/L. Someone at 0.5 mmol/L eating low carb has been doing that for a long time.

    Your ketones were that high when you were eating a "normal" diet?

    Yes, I've never even seen less than 0.2 on blood ketones.
