Anyone with Diverticulitis or on a Low Residue Diet?

Hello,
I've been doing Keto or Low Carb on/off for about a year and half. Prior to that, I ate all the colors of the rainbow which was naturally high fiber and I lost at a faster rate on a higher fiber diet but I also understand and appreciate the benefits of Keto, especially not struggling with cravings and the hunger beast. The hunger beast is still here but it's just a mental barrier.
On Monday I finally went to the walk-in after experiencing severe belly pain for over a week. Needless to say, I was admitted to the hospital after a CT Scan showed I had a severe case of Diverticulitis. I was just released this morning. I have been on a liquid diet since last night when I was changed put to a Low Residue Diet. I am supposed to follow this until next Friday and then change to a high fiber diet.
I count total carbs and unless I go off plan I do not get more than 5-10 grams of fiber.
Does anyone have any experience on this and would you be able to help shed some light on what I should be eating to stay on plan?
Thanks,
Nichelle

I have had two bouts since I started lchf. I was very low carb for a good while. Very strict. Constipated all the time. I had bad discomfort on my lower left side for a while too. Both times I got it we had just finished a big Costo container of macadamia nuts. My doctor said macadamia nuts don't give people diverticulitis. But added that they are inflammatory for some people. Don't worry about carbs while you have this. You have to heal and give it some time. Low residue for a while. I've even water fasted for 6 days to heal. Then ease back into your low carb lifestyle. You don't want this to keep coming back.
I still do low carb healthy fat. But I am not nearly as strict as I used to be. I have been eating all the vegetables I want. I even make an effort to eat them and have some vegetarian meals and even days. I average about 10% carbs 65% fats and 25% protein. This is still working and I am still losing weight. I feel much better. I think this is the way to go for me to help reduce the chance of diverticulitis returning.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you to only eat meat...lol.
Anyway. I hope you feel better. I know it's pretty miserable!

Ground meats are low fiber too.

I have always been placed on a low residue diet for a week prior to the "fun prep" for a routine colonoscopy. I found this on line and it is similar to what I ate for "low residue" to help you through the next few days.

Googled just for interest (I have other digestive issues, but not this particular one), and found this first link from a reliable source...the second one, I don't know the source well - but I can say that the comments made early on about lettuce going right through them was the biggest waving red flag I had that I needed to add stomach acid and digestive enzymes to have some return to normalcy. Best change I've ever made for myself, just FYI.

I've had 2 bouts of diverticulitis. About a year ago I jumped head first into popcorn for 3 days-BOOM, diverticulitis. (swift punishment for going off LC, geesh). I had no idea what the pain was and finally went to the dr about a week from the start. They gave me massive antibiotics which tore my stomach up, took about a month to get gut flora back to normal.
Having second bout RIGHT NOW. I changed up my diet a little about 3 weeks ago. Added in strawberries/raspberries, just a little, they fit into my macros, but I had them every day. The second change was last week I ate foods with VERY high fiber (almond flour) every day. After looking it up I'm pretty sure the combination of the 2 things was what set it up. It's not as bad this time and am trying to heal without antibiotics.
I am dropping the seeded fruit and the almond flour concoctions for now. I am gonna stick with blueberries and see how that goes....
I AM going to continue my veggies!2
