Restarting But This Time I Found a Group :)

Hi everyone,

I'm Kris, I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone and sort of tell ya'll a little bit about myself and my previous experience with 5:2 and my journey to starting over (ugh).

Let me start off by saying I have done 5:2 before, I even reached my goal and ending up switch to 6:1 for maintenance. But unfortunately I allowed myself to get distracted, started eating more carelessly, and stopped exercising. Of course as a result I've gain quite a bit of wait weight back. This time I'm aiming to lose these pesky 15lbs I've gained back, and maybe a bit more depending on how I feel when I lose at least 10lbs. I've started my exercise regiment back up with 2 days of cardio and 2 days of strength, light yoga or walks on my fast days, and 1 active rest day for hikes, training days with the dog, or kayaking.

When I did 5:2 before I was very active, ran 5 miles a day and did 45 minutes of strength/resistance 3 days a week, so I set my normal days to accommodate for that. But this time around I don't want to get burned out or over exert myself, so I've decided to set my normal days to a lower maintenance and just adjust a bit with exercise, but my fast days will be the same as they were my first go round. I had them set to 700 calories then cause it was easier for me to reach than the 500, and I feel that's still a reasonable number to reach now. Surprisingly before I started this thread I noticed ya'll had started another one about how the numbers could be increased from 500 to 700 with the same results. So now I don't feel as bad for being a bit different.

This is my second day, my first fast day, and so far I'm feeling really good. I've been drinking plenty of water to hold me over between meals, and I have all my meals planned out so that I stay within my goal. I keep my profile and diary open if ya'll want to take a look. If you do I will warn you that there will be days where I didn't log, or days when I tried to get back in the groove of things but just couldn't commit. It's been a bit of a struggle for me but I'm committed to sticking with it even in to maintenance this time. I don't want to keep yoyoing like some people do. I know what my ideal weight looks like, I know what it feels like to be there, and be more fit and feel good in my body. And I know that I can do it with 5:2 because I've done it before and I've maintained for quite some time with 6:1 as well. I will not allow myself to get distracted this time and fall back into old lazy habits. If I want it I've got to work for it and keep working hard to keep it.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just kind of excited to be taking charge of my life and starting this journey even if it is for the second time. I'm also happy that I found this group because now I can talk to and ask for advice from people who eat in the same style that I do. Though there's not much difference between 5:2 and just eating in a straight deficit all week (I mean the deficit will be the same at the end of the week if you log correctly either way, it's just a different style of eating), this just gives me a bit more comfort knowing there are other people out there that have made the choice that I have to reach their goals.

    I am a newbie. This is my second full week of 5:2 and today is my forth Light Day.
    I have to say I am really liking this WOE.
    As far as tweaking your calories - good for you! Everybody needs to do what works best for them. For now I am sticking with the 500 calories on Light Days. My guy is also sticking to 600. We have a fair amount of weight that we need to move. But, you never know what will happen down the road. Taking it day by day, week by week.

    Second time around for me too and this time I hope to lose 10 very stubborn pounds that came over winter! Didn't realise MFP had a 5:2 Group so pleased to have found fellow members here.

    Thank you Meghan509. I've been busy reading various articles and posts about 5:2 and it is so encouraging to see that 5:2 is proving to be as popular and effective as ever. There are so many different forms of intermittent fasting eg alternate day fasting, 16:8 but I prefer to stick to 5:2. It worked before and I am already seeing a difference at the end of the first week.

    I'm on my third week of the 5:2 diet. The first two weeks my response was, it's hard but not as hard as I thought it would be. Last week was a bit of a struggle honestly. But today seems to be going fairly easy. I'm hopeful that this diet will finally bring me to my happy weight. This is the year!

    How is everyone else doing on their weight loss adventures?

    This is my third week as well, but since I had used 5:2 as my eating guide before it wasn't as bad starting out this time around. I haven't participated in many of the threads in the group yet, but I love reading about how everyone is doing and what's going on with everyone in the weekly thread, it's very encouraging. I'll the courage one day to post though :smile:.

    Nice to see you guys joining in! Read or share as much or as little as you would like.

    I am a few weeks in myself and I have to say it has gotten easier. I try and keep myself busy on my light days. Sort of look at light days as a bit of a recharge. Drink lots of water and green tea and focus on clean eating.
    On light days if I feel weak I will tell myself its okay, if you really want that you can eat that or more of this or that tomorrow! Silly but it works. I tend to save any "treats" for weekends. Knowing I can have a little something helps me get through as well. I just know I can't over do it, or it becomes pointless at some point.

    Dinner time, tends to be my weak time. My new thing is getting back to the gym. Have to say last night during that hour and half window where I was normally antsy about dinner and snacking in the past, I exercised right through it! Phew.

    Never be shy about posting here or in the weekly thread. Nobody judges in this group. Just here for info and support. Open to all questions and input.

    Yes fasts vary in difficulty. Don't get discouraged. If you go a bit over, no big deal. If you have to abandon a fast for whatever reason, just start again another day. Stay consistent, but don't beat yourself up if the day does not go as planned. It works for many. Tweak your fast day menus to your needs in number of meals and type foods. We are individuals not machines. What works for several may not be your best solution. A bit of trial and error and reflection will get you there. And even after 4yrs...I still have to abandon a fast every now and again .
