So, even though I did the whole weighing/measuring thing for YEARS with WW, until three weeks ago I had not done it in years.
Here's my question (which I should know the answer to!) I always grate my own cheese; but can't remember whether 1 oz of grated cheese is the weight AFTER the cheese is grated or is it a one-ounce chunk that's cut from the block?

Cindy, I T-H-I-N-K it's after grating. The app shows value for grated parm and romano. Even shows one for a Safeway 3 cheese blend (but doesn't say which ones). I just input crumbled feta tonight from the app for my dinner. Enjoy your cheese!0

They're the same. The weight of cheese doesn't change when you grate it. There's no cooking, so no loss of moisture or anything.2

@linmueller Well that's what I THOUGHT. But when I took a 1-oz chunk (weighed before grating) and grated it and re-weighed it, it was LESS than one ounce.0

If you grate your own.. no change. Measure whatever is easier for you.

This is why I grate my own. I found out the hard way that those pre-packaged grated/shredded cheeses don't melt the same way. I ruined an entire recipe of homemade mac and cheese by trying to use the pre-shredded cheese. I ended up with a big CLUMP of cheese instead of cheese sauce.1 -
