Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Thursday -- Wild Card Day--open to anyone who grabs it!
Friday -- Tripaway
Today's Topic: You didn't give it up, but close...
GOADies of old advised not to give up any food while losing weight that you weren't planning to give up for the rest of your life. I latched on to that concept with gusto and vowed to follow the advice as one aspect of making this a 'lifestyle' vs diet. In hindsight though, I realize there are things that I may not have absolutely given up, but I have them very infrequently. A few things I haven't had at all since I started losing weight three years ago.
Are there foods that you haven't given up but just haven't eaten much or any of since starting weight loss? If so, explain how you've gone down the path without that food and whether you miss it or just shrug it off. If not, discuss any pros and cons of truly adopting the 'won't give it up for the rest of my life' in the context of your weight loss goals.

Donuts. I never bought them, but folks would bring them to work. I'd eat a Munchkin if they had those. Donuts are just fried goo. Don't miss them.
And- get ready- pizza! I rarely eat pizza. I used to eat pizza 5-6 times per week. I twisted my self in knots keeping pizza in my program. I told my self (reframing here) unconvincingly, that a WW English muffin with a dab of sauce and a bit of LF cheese was pizza. Rarely think of it now. But never vowed to give it up. It just wasn't worth the points today, day after day after day. Eventually lost its appeal. Big wad of greasy cheese, sausage and bread. Go figure.

Battered, deep fried foods. Between the ajada and the points, I had to ask why?0

First I preface my post with this...I'm OLD! I'm 69 yo and have been on WW (this time) since 2013.
Most of my adult life I ate as much and whatever I wanted without much thought of the consequences. Thus ending up weighting 376 POUNDS!
I remember the GoaD advice to not give up food that you cannot live without for the rest of your life. It made sense because you're not going on a DIET if you really buy into the concept of "It's a Lifestyle, not a DIET!"
I KNOW I have had way over my quota of pizza, beer, donuts, movie popcorn, diet soda, peanut M&Ms, McDonalds Quarter Pounders, fries, DQ malts, the list goes on and on.
The last time I had the urge for a McDonald's burger I bought it, ate it and thought "Why did I do that?" It really didn't taste as good as I remember and I haven't had the urge since then.
I'm aware I can eat anything IF I track it but I'm also aware of the results of going off script.
The last time I had good pizza I ate half brought half home and froze it. About a month later I remembered that frozen pizza! Pre WW I would have eaten the whole serving at restaurant or had any leftovers for breakfast. I'm very happy those days are GONE!
I still think about eating things on the list above but then think "Nah, been there, done that, not worth it."

There are lots of foods I eat much less of, but still enjoy occasionally. Pizza, burgers, ice cream, donuts, all fall in that category. I have almost eliminated chips, of any kind, though. If they're there, I will eat them until they are gone. I used to throw a couple family-sized bags in the cart every time I went to the grocery. Now, I have a potato chip once or twice a year. I still love 'em, but can live without them.1

I first started WW when I was about 20. Let's just say that was a long time ago in the liver and onion days. I definitely don't eat liver anymore.
I also don't eat fried foods at all. I do have the occasional tortilla chip but that is it. I don't miss the other stuff.
I don't eat candy unless it is really good stuff and then maybe once a year.
I gave up red meat and pork. Don't miss it at all.
Perhaps the other good question for another day is what are you eating now that you like even better?
p.s. I never eat Schendler Pie

I don't eat fried foods anymore, partially because they are high cal, but mostly because my stomach goes into full revolt mode if I eat more than 1-2 fries, which is a high incentive to stay away from the stuff.
I also don't really eat chips or crackers anymore. I've always been a sweet instead of savory person so I never went out of my way to have chips, but ever since I've started tracking I realized I'd rather have 2 cookies instead of a serving of chips.
I also try not to drink my calories anymore, or if I do I keep it low cal. A glass of wine is typically 150 calories compared to a 600 calorie daiquiri-yikes!0 -
Nearly all of the stuff I gave up was a result of figuring out my food intolerances way back in 2006. No gluten, dairy, or soy. I missed cheese for a while. Eventually a vegan cheese that is palatable if used in recipes came onto the market so I have pizza maybe 2-3 times a year. The GF breads were so dreadful that I didn't eat any for a very long time. UDI's has products now that are palatable although they will never compare to the homemade breads that my mom used to make.
I have a nice collection of GF/DF dessert recipes that I dip into for special occasions. A family reunion is coming up in another week so I'll be bringing something to share.
I've been at this so long that I'm really having a hard time thinking of something I really miss. I certainly didn't cut anything totally out (short of those things giving me terrible GI distress) to lose weight. Just reduced portion size and/or frequency of consumption.0 -
There were some things I deliberately phased out of my life, like Cheetos. I used a 'nicorette/step down' method, where I switched to buying baked cheetos to satisfy my craving for fluorescent orange foodstuffs. It was much better than going cold turkey. They weren't great but they served a need. Over time I bought them less and less, and eventually realized there was an open bag in the cupboard that had gone stale because it had been so long since I ate any. I threw them away and haven't had any since. Don't really miss them.
Alcohol is much less now, partly because my whole friend group has grown up and doesn't get drunk recreationally on a regular basis any more. Partly for calories' sake. And partly because it can cause hypoglycemia in T1Ds like me. A glass of wine or a beer, a couple times a month. I do miss a more regular wine-with-dinner, or going to craft beer festivals, etc. I can go as the designated driver but its not as fun as before. Just have to live with that one.
I don't have pizza often -- I still love it, but most pizza is just too many carbs. I make it at home where I can double or triple the toppings (or omit the crust altogether).
For a while I kicked legumes out of my life because WW had make them "expensive" but now that I'm counting calories rather than points, they are back in moderation. Hummus, chickpeas on salads, beans in chili & soups.
I don't eat too many fried foods, for calories' sake. Really good french fries, tater tots and onion rings, I will eat. But I've gotten pickier about what constitutes 'really good'.
That goes for a lot of desserts, too. Basically if it doesn't involve chocolate, I won't even consider it. I have no use for oatmeal raisin cookies, for example. Or rice krispie squares. Even oreos are debatable. But I often make room for a Lindor truffle for dessert at home, or my current obsession: a scoop of Halo Top chocolate + a scoop of Halo Top Mint Chip ice cream.

@MurpleCat OMG! Cheetos!!! I had not thought of them in a long time. LoL
I just checked,
21 pieces = 5 SPs

I like great pizza but only a couple of times a year on average. I stopped all craft brew for a month and do use moderation.
I actually drank a real coke this year once because I wanted to. DD almost choked at that one.
My biggest current "vice" is chocolate and nightly. So far ok.
Ice Cream is a rare treat and it better be world class handmade or gelato made on the premises.0 -
You notice I don't do a lot of compromising of ingredients. I do prefer ff yogurt on tacos and potatoes but for its own sake and not pretending it's something else
If I want butter I use the real deal. Most veggìes I don't desire it.0 -
Pop, donuts and chips
I gave up soda pop completely (unless there is rum in it) a couple years ago just because I got to thinking it just wasn't very good to put in my body. No scientific research, it just seemed like there was nothing good to be gained by drinking it.
Donuts just because it doesn't seem worth it. I would much rather have a couple fired eggs with toast and butter
Chips had to go because I can't eat just a few. Sometimes I will get a small bag to go with a subway sandwich where I can't overeat them, but I don't let them come in the house.0 -
Thanks for playin', everyone!
The ones that come to my mind--and prompted the question--are Chinese food (at least the stuff I used to eat the most of: house fried noodles with chicken, pork and veggies) and BBQ, which I also used to eat quite a bit of.
I didn't swear either one of them off but both have practically fallen by the wayside. Every once in a while, I'll get BBQ but I certainly don't eat it in quantity worth making at home. We have an OK-decent place for Chinese food locally and I realized the other day I haven't been there since I started WW in 2014. I didn't intentionally write it, but given the old point-value (on Points Plus), it certainly wasn't something I'd have often. Turns out not often has been not at all.
I still like the concept of not giving anything up you're not going to give up for life but I'm finding some things are working their way off or at least pretty low down on the list over time.0 -
Oh -- the Chinese food comment reminds me that I've pretty much sworn off buffets except for salad bars. I eat Chinese food, just not stuff that's been sitting out under heat lamps for a long time. Ditto on Indian food. Make it for me when I order it, I'm not interested in having vast quantities of mediocre quality.0

Soda is probably the thing I have cut back most on.. It used to be an every day drink, sometimes in excess of 2-3L / day... I still enjoy a soda, but now it's more like 1-2 drinks/month, and in a much smaller quantity.
All other calorie dense foods.. I don't shy away from, just in reduced portions, and make sure I have lower density foods in the meal to make up enough bulk that I don't walk away hungry.0
