Eating on all inclusive trips

We are going on a diving trip. (scuba diving). I could use some tips for staying on plan. My goal is not gain weight while I'm gone.
We will be on a boat for a week. They provide 3 meals a day plus 2 prepared snacks so it is pretty much eat dive eat dive eat dive eat dive eat dive drink. (You can't drink alcohol until you are done diving for the day.) Additional exercise is limited.
Breakfast and lunch are buffet with dinner served to us.
Now the tips please:
I already have
- walk down the buffet line to decide what to have
- leave space between everything on the plate and only one plate of food. (If I'm really hungry I can go back for salad or fruit)
- skip the desert after dinner
- half the plate should be vegetables
- drink lots and lots of water
I know that I'll come back 3 lbs heavy from salt and sitting on a plane for a day. It will come off in a few days.
Then back to work to lose the rest of my weight.
Thoughts? tips?

I've never been on a cruise, but I have gone to several all-inclusive resorts, and I suspect there are a lot of similarities in terms of food and alcohol. So here are some thoughts:
-it's been my experience, regardless of the quality of the resort, that the preponderance of the buffet items are the same every day. Keeping that in mind helps me think through how 'important' it is to put some specific item on my plate each day.
-I actually make two trips to the buffet. In the first, I scout the offerings and get a meal starter (like salad at lunch or fruit and yogurt at breakfast). I'm a fast eater, so this helps lengthen the meal. Plus, I'm no longer 'shopping' on an empty stomach, so my choices become somewhat less impulsive.
-If alcohol is included in your package, there will be plenty of attempts to water it down. This is usually done with some sugary concoction- think daquaris and pina coladas. I'd stick with basics- beer, wine and something sippable (scotch on the rocks, etc). Also, if the house offerings are not great, consider paying the upcharge to get a truly enjoyable drink. You'll drink less and enjoy it more. Unless, of course, your objective is to get hammered, then it really doesn't matter.
-If you're planning to include some desserts, you may want to reconsider and have the served dessert and skip the buffets, where the offerings are frequently not as good and where it's much more difficult to gauge serving size.
-If there are any alternative venues for breakfast or lunch where there is table service, consider them instead.
My wife and I both tend to dislike buffets, so we always look for menu service.2 -
@countcurt Thank you for your tips. I agree, I don't like buffets, the food is not as good and it's too easy to overeat. On this smaller boat, they have only one place to eat. I do like your scouting trip idea and having salad first. Good idea0

I like to get very small portions of things that look good, then go back for something that's worth it.
Re. dessert, I'd have small portions of ones that are good and leave anything that isn't. This will require being mindful.
Skip bread, unless it's your favorite.
Don't eat anything that's high calorie and isn't good.
Decide how much alcohol you'll drink each night and have water or some other low cal beverage in between. Have the bartender throw a lime or lemon in there and no one will even know.2 -
@linmueller thanks1
