Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Today's topic: Vacation

We're nearing the summer half way mark. Been on vacation yet? How'd it go? Does weight or weight loss figure into your vacation planning? If you haven't gone yet, what's your plan?

Man. I launched the days 1st LTL into cyberspace with the push of a wrong button.

So my fellow Goadies know by now that I'm retired and live in Key West. It's true. It's sorta one big vacation.

But DW and i have to head back to Chicago next month. We have some business and DD is there. We'll be in a hotel for about 2 weeks. The first place we considered was next door to a new Culver's. This was causing some anxiety. Then there was the Portillo's across the street. Need a different hotel.

It's like I'm having an early days of WW flashback. What's going to happen to me out of my routine? I've just hit the green zone of IM. I confess, I have no plan. I've got a month to get one.

Like you, I am retired. It's all a vacation. We did spend a week in Vegas earlier this year and might take a multi-day drive around the Western U.S. in September, after kids are back in school and the crowds thin.

I don't plan much anyway, and especially don't on trips like these. What I do, is try to show some common sense. I eat whatever I want, but I don't gorge myself. If I go to a buffet, I am happy to just make one trip through, to assemble one reasonable meal, for example. In five days in Las Vegas, I gained 1 lb. Easily dropped.

I have more issues at home, where I know where all the snacks are.

We went rafting the Grand Canyon and had no eating plan. Let's just say the number on the scale wasn't pretty. We are going on a dive trip next week. I definitely have a plan. My plan is outlined in another post. I'd like to come back without gaining weight.

My vacation is not until October, when we'll be going to Maine. Looking forward to some good East Coast seafood. I get plenty of West Coast seafood; so, it'll be nice to get some of the fresh, local stuff on our trip.

I used to vacation in a sea of food and drink. Seriously, it was a big part of any vacation I took. I love trying local foods and eateries; never have been a fan of chain establishments.

In a nutshell, vacations from here on out will still include the local joints and sampling local foods but the breadth of those trips will be far more inclusive of walking / hiking / exploring than in my previous life. I will always make sure to get a room with a fridge and at least a microwave. A decent grocery store nearby (preferably walkable) with fresh goods is definitely on my list for accommodations.

I know the basics of keeping the weight off. I practice every day for holidays, celebrations, vacations, etc. I accept and respect it's about choices. Being fat is a choice I choose less and less and there is no 'free lunch'. Whether I'm at home doing the daily grind or on vacation, the choices are similar. I like to mix and match, but in the end, I feel good about making good choices consistent with my objective of keeping the weight off.

My vacations always include abundant outdoor activity (biking, hiking) as those activities brings me great pleasure. I also continue to track my food intake while away but work indulgences into my daily intake. Thus I stay weight stable during my vacations.

I just came back from 3 days up in Fond du lac Wisconsin where I volunteered at a multi day cycling event. I worked overnight Saturday supporting the riders but really tried to stay aware of my true hunger levels as sleep deprivation can lead to excessive eating. I was successful in keeping my food intake reasonable. Now I need to work down my sleep deficit.

I suppose I see retirement and vacation as being different, since I've never not traveled while on vacation and I expect that when I retire I won't be traveling all the time.

I was already away for about a month this spring/summer. NY, Peru, Ecuador. That was followed by two long weekends, one in Boston for the MS150-Cape Cod Getaway, and the other in Chicago, helping my son with his relocation there.

I am fortunate in that, as a boredom eater, I don't find travel to be a challenge. There's not much down time and, whether home or away, I don't eat in the bedroom. Hence, we don't keep food in the hotel room, so even if I do have down time, I can't fill it with food.

Weight loss doesn't figure into my vacation plans per se. But I am an active vacationer, so I walk a lot more while sightseeing, for example, and I always make sure my hotel has a pool so I can swim (feels like a real indulgence/ luxury to me!) So mostly I just have to make sure my eating isn't wildly out of spec. Some latitude is allowed, but honestly the luxury is just having someone else chop all the vegetables, cook my fish, and so on.
