Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Today's topic: The Martians Have Landed
OK say the Martians land and they wonder what this diet and weight loss thing that all the Earthlings are so caught up in is about. But it turns out that communicating with the Martians is a bit tough. The translators charge big bucks. So you only get to tell them 3 things.
What are the 3 most important things to know about weight loss? Remember, the Martians know nothing about it.

1. Successful weight loss requires a shift of lifestyle - a change in how things are done.
2. The shift in lifestyle must be permanent for continued success.
3. The occasional screw up should be taken in stride, but should not deter one from the ultimate goal.1 -
I'd ask the Martians who seem to have superior scientific ability if they have figured out how to eat all you want and maintain a good weight.
Surely they have found a pill or something.

1. Consistency matters
2. Track the good, the bad, and the truly ugly
3. Pick a way of eating that you can do for the rest of your life1 -
1) Calculate a moderate calorie deficit.
2) Keep a journal of what you eat.
3) Allow for the time it's going to take for the process to work. If you haven't noticed, our species is not big on patience.1 -
1)Move more than you eat.
2)Divide your small plate up into portions with 1/2 veggies and the 1.4 protein and 1/4 .
3) SMILE it makes the Martians want to know what you are up to.

1. Humans tend to take in more energy (calories) than they need.
2. To fix this problem, we need to reduce our energy intake or increase our output.
3. We tend to make it a lot more complicated than it needs to be.0 -
Fun question.
Here's what I'd tell the Martians since they don't know anything:
1) Humans need food as an energy source to exist. In some places on earth, food is abundant. In other places, it is scarce. Much of the food in the areas where abundant is also delicious and provides pleasure to the consumer. Many humans with easy access to food consume more than they need for energy, so they become overweight. So in order to become a normal weight, humans have to learn to consume less fuel than they burn. Many times this is seen as a loss of pleasure (or even punishment), so it can be very difficult mentally.
2) Given the above, the best way to get past the difficult mental aspect of consuming less than you use for fuel is to do so gradually, so that you don't feel deprived. This takes practice, and is hard because lots of humans make big changes in how they eat or exercise and lose weight quickly, and we humans think, "Maybe I should be doing what she's doing instead of sticking with my plan." And we're not really a patient species to begin with. We like and are used to instant gratification. Also, there are literally thousands of companies advertising 24 hours a day (more like 25 hours for you Martians) promising us quick weight loss if we buy their product or service. We love the idea of their products/services almost as much as we love our delicious abundant food - - especially if the person endorsing the product/service is our favorite celebrity or just a spokesperson we want to emulate. (Do you have the concept of esteem/self-esteem and lack thereof on Mars?)
3) So finally, once a human signs on to the idea that gradual reduction in consumption relative to expenditure is the way to lose the extra weight, and actually sees that it works, we have to remember this and be mindful of applying the principle FOREVER - - and that's a mighty long time. (Do you Martians know about Prince? If not, you should.) This is difficult again because of the delicious food and because we have many, many, many distractions and stressors here on earth. Some of the distractions and stressors are real and unavoidable, and some are choices. Either way, we sometimes use food to alleviate stress and/or eat "unmindfully" because we're distracted. And that's fine, as long as it doesn't go on for too long, and we get back to the concept of "mindful forever."
So, in summary: Food is delicious. Eat a little less, forever. And listen to Prince.2 -
1. When you consistently have trouble zipping your Martian suit, you're probably becoming overweight by Earthling standards ("fat" by GOAD standards). This is the time to start reversing course and bringing your weight back down--not a year or more later.
2. There's great stuff to eat here on earth but in order to stay relatively healthy, you want to rarely eat so much that you feel stuffed, with the possible exception that the feeling comes from eating too much fruit or vegetables. (If you don't know what they are, ask someone else because I'm reaching my limit on what I can tell you.)
3. You aren't as likely to get fat if you move and exert yourself to somewhat offset / counterbalance your intake of food (especially the stuff that's not fruit or vegetable--see # 2 above).0 -
