I am leaving Monday for a week long road trip... Driving with my daughter and 20 month old granddaughter cross country to help them move.

To make it even more fun, I am flying to the starting point, so packing the car with healthy snacks is a bit out of my control.

Suggestions welcome!

Well, It might be impossible to stay rigidly within your DP. I know I found it tough on similar trips. But you need to continue to track everything. Just show restraint and common sense. You have to eat, so do the best you can. Going overboard is not a choice you have to make, so don't.

I think @DavidKuhnsSr summed it up well. If you envision where you want to be weight-wise when you get home and follow his advice, I'm sure you'll do fine. Enjoy the trip with your family; sounds like it could be a great memory for all of you (well, maybe / maybe not the granddaughter).

Well, my road stops tend to be 2. McD & Chick-fil-A. They are both reliable and generally clean, though some are better than others. Chick serves a grilled wrap with a side salad. McD's, which is everywhere, salads aren't as good as they were, but all day breakfast, including oatmeal. Not so bad.

But a word about those places, particularly McDs. I'm safe there. I don't see the burgers, the fried chicken sandwiches or even the French fries. Sometimes I open up the Egg McMuffin and scrape off the cheese. But if you aren't safe, don't go.

Or, why can't your first pit stop be at some sort of food market? You can have your snacks in a few minutes.

Oh, flying. I alway take food on the plane. Last thing I want is to be overly hungry at my destination airport looking for something to eat.

Set a realistic goal for the trip, weight wise. I find these kinds of trips relatively easy because there's so much garbage along the way and very little 'must have' food. I recently found myself driving half-way across the midwest and I was amazed at how much more expansive food/grocery selections have become at stops along the way. Particularly in terms of healthier options. But unless you'll be unable to pack up on some good 'choices' to have in the car before you go, I agree that's a good starting point.

Honestly, though, this is totally doable. If you want to.

Seems like you could stop and get a cooler and healthy snacks at the local grocery store. With a baby in the car I would think you will need food for her. Also think about making sandwiches for lunch along the road. We stop at rest stops or a local park to make lunch. You can also buy fresh fruit and vegetables already cut up so they are ready for snacking. Best of luck having a great family road trip and meeting your weight goals.

Thank you all! I leave tonight... fly out red eye then start driving tomorrow. Plan is to hit a grocery store for snacks and menu as wisely as I can.
