Hi All,
I'm new to Keto and really looking forward to giving it a good bash.
Has anyone got any hints/tips/essentials or secrets to getting the best out of it?
Really want to do this right!
My diary is open, any criticisms for day one is welcomed as I'm feeling a bit lost
Also anyone wants to add me as a friend feel free.
Thanks
Teri x
P.S I'm uk based

@myketojourney87 welcome. I wish you well in your journey. I'm a newbie myself so I don't have a lot of advice to offer but there are some knowledgeable people here that are willing to help. You can look at my diary too if you'd like.3

I have been doing LCHF since October 2016. I am T2D, and so I am watching glucose levels. It has been easy for me to follow, and I have gotten great results.
As I have watched trends, I found that I seemed to need higher levels of fat at first to be happy and feel full. I have become increasingly aware of protein levels recently and have been mindful to meet or exceed my protein goal. Without trying, I have found my fat intake for the last few months to be consistently low. Sometimes they are half or two thirds of the macro at the end of the day. I think I have perhaps retrained my body to just use fat from other sources (my Strategic Energy Reserve), and I don't need the intake.
There have been some interesting points in the experience. In one six week period back in May/June, I lost five inches on my waist. Something was going on. it seemed as if my belt needed another hole every time I turned around. This corresponded with a plateau on the weight. Right now I seem to be dropping pounds faster than the calories would suggest. Inches seem to be staying put. This points out the value in using a tape measure as well as the scale to measure progress.
I would suggest staying on top of the sodium from day one. I keep mine between 4000 and 5000 as a rule. I keep carbs under 20. As close as I can tell, my glucose levels seem better when I exceed the protein goal and there seems to be a sweet spot in glucose levels (for me) when I am about 10-20% under my calorie goal. There are lots of variables here, and the weight loss has probably helped with the glucose readings.
Feel free to add me if you want. The diary is open to friends. I am not one of those guys who will send you creepy messages.8 -

Make good food that you enjoy. There are delish low carb recipes. Cook up several days of food at a time. Take your food with you everywhere. That way you if you are hungry you have access to quick food. Watch out for protein bars. Some have a lot of carbs. I hope you enjoy the journey.1

Welcome! Be sure to read all the good info at the LCHF Launchpad: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10103966/start-here-the-lcd-launch-pad#latest
I'd recommend some pickle juice on hand as well as olives, bouillon cubes, a jar of anchovies, etc, anything that you can go to for a fast SODIUM increase because you'll need to make sure you keep your sodium levels up. When I make bacon I always make extra and freeze some for those times when I need a quick, yummy increase in sodium. Good luck.
Feel free to add me as a friend. My diary is open to all friends.2 -
Read, read, read everything you can. This woe seems difficult at first. It's so different from everything we've ever been told about healthy eating! But it becomes the easiest, and most delicious, woe!!
Finding your balance is the key to success! Low carb is a wide range in carb levels. 150gm or less is considered low carb and many can succeed there. Others find that ketogenic levels (50gm, or less) work best for them.
Keeping your sodium intake up is very important! I use pickle juice, and sodium tablets for this. Magnesium is also a vital supplement for electrolyte balance. I use magnesium citrate tablets two times a day. If I don't the leg cramps will be terrible! Ketones are excreted via the urine, and they take sodium, and magnesium, with them! This leads to an electrolyte Imbalance that causes you to feel faint, weak, jittery..... Replacing what you're losing is so important, and shouldn't be ignored. These symptoms can be avoided by keeping sodium levels up!
I'm always open to more friends! Best of luck!!1 -
Haha - maybe I should have been more clear. Someone on my friends list was venting the other day about guys who friend you and then start sending somewhat personal "creepy" messages. I just wanted to make clear I was here for the LCHF and the associated support.2 -

I really like having premium so I can track my grams not percentages. It makes it much easier. I set my protein to 90 grams. Carb 20gram is the usual induction (I do more because I am breastfeeding) and then the rest of your calories via fat. Set your preferences to show fiber in your daily diary totals if you are doing net carbs. Drink lots of water. Chicken broth can often save the day and get ready to feel fabulous soon.2
