Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

My parents were both overweight, but we were required to eat 6 servings of fruits and vegetables per day to get ice cream for desert. I've grown to love fruits and vegetables and eat a wide variety of them. I still love ice cream but have it only a few times per year.0

I eat like my Dad where no matter how much food is on the plate, I will finish it all. We both have a bottomless pit of a stomach so learning and sticking with correct portion sizes is still something I have to be VERY mindful of.0

Dinner time became a battleground when my parents forced me to eat vegetables. I got good at being able to swallow them with the least amount of chewing. It took a long time into adulthood before I would touch anything other than corn and potatoes.
The positive is that I can swallow big pills without gagging. My poor DH has a terrible time with just about any size pill.

I had a fairly healthy lifestyle growing up... so food choices and learning how to cook a balanced meal were just part of it.
Good and bad both, I was extremely active as a child... I could and did eat everything you put in front of me, asked for 2nds and 3rds, and never put on weight (and was thin as a toothpick), I found it difficult to eat enough not to feel starving a few hours later... this definitely shaped my eating habits.
As an adult, as I slowed down... this way of eating prodigious amounts of food definitely caused my weight gain.
I've had to learn how to cut my portions down to about 1/3 of what I used to eat... and that was really tough!0 -
My parents were thin because they worked physical jobs a smoked a lot. Food choices were made by the standard of how much you could get cheap. The idea was to get through the day. Good health, if you had it, just sort of happened to you. I don't recall my folks missing work because of illness. It just wasn't done.
I was fat as a kid until I was thin. I was thin in college, until I got fat. Was a fat adult, thin, fat again. Finally figured out that I could in fact drive the bus.1 -
Helped? My mom served a lot of nutritious foods. Negative? Too much ice cream in addition around.0

I was a very shy and insecure child. YES, it started in Pre_school. My mom used to give me cookies when I was upset. That was the START of me eating my emotions.
My parents will do anything to support me. When I first started WW my mother would leave the recipes out for me so that I could calculate the points. She also took out measuring cups and a scale so I could accurately track.1 -
"Eat everything on your plate." This has been a challenge to let go of since I've been doing it for about 50 years. It certainly contributed to getting me in the door to WW.
I have since learned I can "waist" food or I can "waste" it. The lesser of two evils is to waste it.0 -
As a child we didn't have much, so any time my Mom would bring something home that was a treat, like ice cream, my two brothers and I would devour it. When I got married there was no more competition and I gained weight very quickly. The only way I can deal with it now is portion control and tracking. As I've said before, my gas gauge is broken.0

Bad:
Having seconds at dinner was "normal".
Good:
We hardly ever had desserts.0
