Hi everyone,
I have an appointment scheduled for the 28th to consult a physician about the possibility of getting Bariatric Surgery.
Has anyone here gotten either Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass surgery and do you have any information to offer or suggestions of questions I should possibly ask my provider?

I had VSG just about 4 years ago. It's kind of a blur as to what I spoke to my surgeon about prior to surgery. My surgeon and his group gave me so much information I didn't even really have a lot of questions. It was borderline information overload!
One thing to realize is that surgery is a tool, in and of itself it's not the solution, so while it is an amazing tool, you still have to make permanent changes and be prepared to commit to that. To me that wasn't a big issue because I knew whatever path I chose to being healthy, I would have to commit to lifestyle changes for the rest of my life.
Beyond that, make sure your doctors clearly explain the differences between the different types of surgery available to you. I chose VSG because I felt it was less invasive than the bypass. Make sure you are aware of the stages of recovery and what to expect. Ask about what your diet will might look like post surgery, although tolerances to certain foods can continually change. If you have any health issues, find out how the surgery will affect them. If you decide to have surgery, make the lifestyle changes you will need later BEFORE you have surgery to get used to how you will be living. I lost 70 lbs and changed my eating and activity level prior to surgery and I really believe this is part of why my recovery was so easy and practically pain-free.
Having surgery gave me the quality of health and life that I never thought I could have. It was the best decision I made for myself and I have zero regrets and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Good luck with whatever path you choose to become more healthy!1 -
Research your surgeon and Bariatric center. Make sure you are comfortable with the team. Find out what support they offer pre and post op. I found the forums on Bariatricpal provided a long of good info on what to expect.0
