How many of you GoaDs track this?
Do you Have a goal BMI?
Do you have comments, thoughts. Stories on BMI?

The reason I ask is because I'm about three pounds away from getting below Obese to just Overweight!

My height has shrunk from 5' 9 1/2" to 5'8". So to reach Normal BMI I would need to lose another 33 pounds to a weight I was last at when I was a teenager on the HS wrestling team!

I am happy getting my BMI below Obese, I remember it was in 2002 when a Dr told me I was Morbidly Obese. It was my first to a new PCP. He was a tall lean guy and VERY BLUNT about it. He sent me to hospital dietitian. They took me to the basement and weighed me on the freight scale!!! I was sooo embarrassed I never went back.

I know some folks don't put stock in the BMI chart because of the many different body types (shapes! Pear vs apple, mucular vs swimmer physique)
I would like to know if AGE is ever considered in setting a BMI goal? I think it is base on sex and height only,

After losing 176# I know some of my remaining 199# is stretched out excess skin. I can live with that.

I plan to discuss a BMI goal and a GW with my PCP in two weeks. If/when I get down to 188 that would be 50% of my SW!!! I've been thinking of 186 GW to make it a loss of 190#.

SW 376 (2013 age 65)
CW 199.8
GW TBD

    I track mine.

My goal BMI is 21.0 - which is slightly under the half way mark between under and overweight. I determined this goal based on my body type (I have a slight build naturally, and am fairly thin boned for a guy).

Personally I think BMI is a great standard for 99% of the population.

    1 - It's easy to measure.
2 - It is even easier to track changes over time.
3 - It is gives an accurate result for what it measures (as opposed to all methods of BF% measurements, which can vary dramatically).
4 - It can be measured for free at any time.

Is it perfect? Not by a long shot..

    1 - Doesn't take into account body fat % or bone size/density
2 - Shows some bodybuilders as being overweight/obese (that is the 1%)

I've already done the math to determine what my goal BMI (and my milestone BMI markers such as crossing from overweight to normal) translates to in weight, so unless I start shrinking rapidly, I don't calculate my exact BMI often.

Short of getting a DEXA scan every 2 months (yikes at that expense!), it's a very simple way to make sure I'm going in the right direction.

Close enough for me but I am not a body builder heavy weightlifter type. I have done body fat in the past and "can ya pinch an inch" stuff. All work fine for me. I am just under my max BMi weight for normal I think. I didn't care if I reached it but am fine with being in the range. Probably a teensy bit high in body fat but close enough.
Oh OK I "cheated" and didn't redo my BMI based on current shrunken height. I was about 5'9 &3/4 " but now stretch to get to 5'8 and maybe 1/4" or so. Won't change my goal because of that. .

I feel best when I get under 28 or 29. But honestly, just out of the obese range is good for me.

I used it as a guide when I approached and tried to figure out (by feel) my goal weight. I marveled the first few days when it was "normal". My preferred weight is a several pounds below the top of my normal range. Even though I'm a bit above my preferred weight by a couple pounds, I'm still normal BMI and have been since reaching official goal a couple years ago. I don't give it much thought these days. However, I think it I got back up to an overweight BMI, it would be a red flag for me that I need to get more diligent about the program.

BMI for me is a totally secondary thought since I have so much more to lose. Jim I can see how your weight loss and BMI are coming together shortly. It is a daunting thought to have lost 176 lbs but you have really gone after it. I know my BMI is way high as it should be for my weight but I still have a long way to go.

Didn't start out this way, but now my line in the sand is staying out of overweight BMI.

BMI isn't an ideal system for me. To give you a sense, in my profile picture I am classified as overweight on the BMI scale. I go by how I feel, how my clothes fit, and that my doctor is happy :)

(And I'm not a major weightlifter but I do a lot of physical activity so I do have a higher than normal composition of muscle mass which likely affects this).

I agree that BMI isn't an ideal system, but when I found myself back in the obese BMI range in 2011 I felt like a fraud teaching in a program that is focused on fitness (clinical exercise physiology).

When I finally got serious about my weight (WW at Work), my first goal was to get out of the obese BMI range. Next goal was to get out of the overweight BMI range.

Since I have access to a high tech body composition scale in my lab, I use that now to monitor my body fat % instead of being concerned about BMI.
