Nutritarian November

Not too creative a title, sorry. I was trying to think of something better, since we always do Nutritarian New Year in January... but brain won't help me.
Picking up from the last posts in the October thread. Thanks for the reminder Carla, I would have totally forgotten to start a new thread too.
I’m all about the spicy food too, Donna… or even if it’s not spicy it should taste good! I’m going to make the OSG chili and some cornbread this weekend. My favorite fall comfort foods. I have a couple recipes for oil-free cornbread that are good. Oops on the TJ’s pumpkin seeds.
Har har har Carla… fathom. I probably would have missed it without your hint lol. The whole giving out candy thing lost appeal for me. When I first moved here I’d get a hundred or more kids by, and a lot of the neighbors would be outside in their driveways, we’d have drinks and munchies going among the neighbors (made the parents out herding kids jealous seeing our cocktails lol) … but we don’t have as many little ones around now and a lot of the neighbors that were doing that either stopped or they moved.
Left the office about 3:30 so I could get home and do a load of laundry and some food prep. I bought veggies on Sunday and haven’t done anything with them yet. I refuse to let another shopping trip end up the trash! Going to bake a couple potatoes and some Japanese sweet potatoes (they are soooo good just plain and I even like the skin on them), a batch of "cheesy" chickpeas, steam broccoli and asparagus, sauté collards with onion, garlic and mushrooms. Will be all ready for the next 4 or 5 days.
The Japanese sweet potatoes, I just quarter and bake cut side down on parchment paper in a covered casserole dish. They are delicious.
Off to get busy. And my goal for this month is to have NO alcohol, NO pretzels or crackers, and eat all good whole foods. I’ll make a couple indulgent dishes for Thanksgiving and drink some wine, but then it will be back on the wagon until Christmas. This recipe is a favorite I’m sure I’ll make it… http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2006/12/sweet-potato-casserole-with-pecan.html It’s totally decadent. Most of Susan’s recipes are ETL compliant, but this one is definitely not, and worth it once a year!

It went from fall on the 31st to WINTER overnight. There is so much snow in just one day that I can't believe it. And it's supposed to snow some more today. And again on Saturday. So I think it's here to stay.
Went swimming yesterday. Was pushing myself to go faster and I was really sucking wind, so I stopped at 60 laps. And then my son and I went to do flyers. It was painfully slow because it was so slippery. He fell twice and I fell once. But I almost fell at least a half dozen times. And sometimes that hurts more than actually falling... It was terrible. It took us an hour and forty-five minutes to do what takes us 1 hour without snow. it was BRUTAL! And afterwards I was cold for hours. I had to get an extra blanket, and I wore socks and a sweater to bed, too. Brrr. I finally took the sweater off at about 2am.1 -
I love the title!
Carla, I will definitely check out veganricha.com. I really appreciate this group and all the wonderful advice, recommended web sites and support. I started taking the B12 last week.
Mihani - good job on the prep! I love sweet potatoes. I will have to look for the Japanese potatoes. We might go to Whole Foods this weekend.
Karrie - where do you live that it is so cold? We are from Colorado but as a child we moved to western Canada for 5 years. I love the snow but not slippery stuff.
I started logging in Oct. 2...had started ETL 2 weeks prior and had a good weight loss but from Oct. 2 - Nov.2 I lost 12 lbs. My goal was 2 lbs/week. I am off the 6 week plan that I followed somewhat closely.
November goals:
Lose 5 more lbs by Thanksgiving for a total of 8 lbs from previous goals.
Try one new vegan recipe a week.
Every third day try to eat a vegan diet.
Lunch on Friday at a Thai restaurant with a good friend who is a big big meat eater. She will have something snippy to say about my vegetarian diet. I looked at the menu and am prepared to order the broccoli stir fry and Jasmin hot tea. I am sure it will be loaded with sodium. I am going to ask for more vegetables and no rice.
B - zucchini, mushroom and 1 small red potatoes sauted in water with an egg
before tennis: apple and carrot smoothie
L- Salad or soup, w/hummus and crackers
D- roasted broccoli and cauliflower with either a sweet potato or quinoa.

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, and truthfully it wasn't that cold last night; I think it was only -6ºC. It was just the fact that the temperature changed drastically in just one day, and that we were outside delivering flyers for nearly 2 hours.0
-
Really! I lived in Saskatoon from 2-6th grade! We are going to Vancouver and Whistler for two weeks early December. I have wonderful memories from Saskatoon. My older sister stayed there for 30 years...moving between Saskatoon and Calgary until she decided to retire to Albuquerque, NM. It does get cold there but so beautiful!

I live in Regina.0
-
I remember visiting Regina when my sister was briefly transferred there. I remember a beautiful park with a fountain in a lake or river?

Then 25 years ago when I went through a sad divorce, I organized friends from Colorado to fly to Saskatchewan and we went on an all women's canoe trip up north through the Churchill lakes. I remember the sunsets were amazing...bright red, orange and pink...looked like the sky was on fire.0
-
Yikes Karrie… crazy weather. I know what you mean, when you slip everything tenses up and it’s easy to twinge your back or knee even if you don’t fall. How often do you have to deliver the flyers?
Donna, we’re glad to have you part of the group! You’ve done great with your loss so far!!! Is your husband still sticking with it? I found people were almost offended when I decided to go vegan, vegetarian is more mainstream I think so it caused minimal eye-rolling during those years, but vegan got people riled up lol. I don’t even think about it anymore, it’s just how I eat and a lot of people don’t even realize it unless someone else mentions.
Got all my prep done so I had a good dinner last night and a big salad with lots of goodies in it today for lunch. I need to get back at the treadmill. Will hit it for 20 or 30 minutes tonight.

My husband is doing great sticking to it. I bought a lot of vegetables today so we have some prepping to do.
Dinner tonight:
roasted broccoli and cauliflower
quinoa
garbanzo beans
mixed in TJ's Indian Fare Madras Lentil
It was delicious!0 -
Yum, dinner sounds great Donna!
I'm going to make yet another pot of the glowing spiced lentil soup. I think I have a problem here. I may need rehab lol. It's just so easy and so good, and while not really ETL compliant with the coconut milk, it's so yummy that I can't resist it. I figure it's better than a lot of things I could be indulging in, and it is so satisfying that a bowl of soup and a slice of crusty bread is all I need for dinner. I'm going to make multi-bean chili this weekend too, if I have time with work. This week was nothing but new clients and fires to put out. I am more behind than ever. Waaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! I know it's good to be so busy that means we're doing something right, but geeze... I need a break.

Woo HOoo for Dr. Furhman's ETL diet. Lab results from last week!
My Cholesterol went from 252 to 202
HDL (good cholesterol) went from 46 to 49
LDL (very bad cholesterol) went from 166 to 122
Triglycerides 223 to 153
A1C was 5.6 (high side of normal) anything above 5.7 is considered pre diabetes and greater than 6.4 is considered Diabetic.
Fasting Blood sugar was 104 and previously it was 114.
Yay, this means if I continue on ETL, avoid all the white stuff (sugar &flour) and fatty high saturated meats I won't be put on horrible meds!!!!
Just made my roasted vegetable soup this afternoon. Brooks is down 11 lbs in 3 weeks!

Wow, what great results Donna!!! That is awesome! And your husband is doing great too! So happy for you.
I got myself messed up yesterday by going back to bed in the morning, then the office, then I came home and worked on a couple things here, stayed up too late, and now I'm just getting ready to leave for the office. Time change to the rescue, I'm not as late heading out as I would have been yesterday haha!

Same thing for us guys in British Columbia. NO snow on Halloween and then the next day we get a dump of snow!1 -
Woke up this morning and got onto the treadmill. Just a half hour, but at least I did it. Going swimming tonight too; should be able to get in my 80 laps.
Have berries & bananas for breakfast, going to have a smoothie for lunch. Then for supper I'm having roasted spaghetti squash with the OSG immunity building tomato basil sauce (I added spinach to it for some extra greens). I brought myself some skinny pop popcorn for a snack today at work, 'cuz I'm trying to plan ahead to have better choices...1 -
Hiya BcMuscles… welcome to the November thread! Do you follow ETL or are you veg/vegan? We all kind of march to our own drummer, but try to keep it plant strong for the most part. We don’t see too many guys around here so it’s nice to have you.
Well done on the treadmill, and the yummy food plan Karrie!
Today was killer at the office. It was crazy and scrambling to get things done all day. The only thing I’m looking forward to about Thanksgiving is having a long weekend to catch up on work lol.
I’m still doing a basic plan of oatmeal for breakfast, a Dr. McD’s soup cup for lunch with some fruit and/or raw veggies on the side, and whatever for dinner. Tonight is going to be a hummus fajita loaded up with onion, peppers, and power greens.

I got the job! I'm accepting it today. Yay!!
I had an exhausting day yesterday and I ended up only swimming 30 laps. I just didn't have the wind to keep going. So I allowed myself a nice long soak in the hot tub. It was nice.
Today I got up and got on the treadmill again. 2 for 2.
Berries, bananas & pecans for bfast. Carrots for snack. Big Salad for lunch. Popcorn for snack. And then supper is going to be the squash and tomato basil sauce again. SO YUMMY!
I'm back to losing again this morning; that was nice (even though it was only .2, I'll take it!!)
I might have to walk to work at my new job because it's downtown and parking will be an issue. It should take me about 20 minutes to walk, give or take. I'll need some good winter wear!!!1 -
Hi guys!
Mihani, i read your McD's soup without the 'Dr.' in front and I was all what the heck does McDonalds have that Mihani will eat?! The soup makes a lot more sense. Almost spilled my coffee there
Grats on the job, Karrie! When do you start? A 20 minute walk sounds ideal for most of the year. It's the perfect excuse to knit up a toque and mitts (handspun?)!
I'm not doing great with my food at all. I've put on about 4 lbs. It comes back so fast. As of today, I'm going back to my morning smoothie. The food might go downhill during the day, but at least I'll be starting out good!0 -
Congratulations on the job Karrie!!!! Very exciting.
I have been making hummus today. Made plain garlic hummus and hummus with roasted red peppers. Both were good even though I left out the olive oil. I could have OD'd on hummus today.
Carla, I agree...it is so hard to lose weight but easy to gain it back. I am also counting calories and weighing food as well as trying to follow ETL...other wise I could make and eat a thousand calorie salad or soup.0 -
Woohoo, congrats on the job Karrie!!! And on your commitment to the treadmill and eating well! Walking to work sounds like a great way to get some extra exercise in, without it seeming like exercise.
Haha Carla, yeah must have the Dr. in front of the McD. I really like the miso ramen, black bean lime, and pad thai varieties. I like the split pea but for some reason I got acid reflux from it. Ugh. I hope it was a one time thing since I have 5 more containers. I price compared and it’s actually cheaper, even paying for shipping, to buy the soups from Dr. McD’s rightfoods website than it would be on amazon or buying them at the grocery. Go figure. I got 6 packs of split pea, pad thai, and black bean, so I’m all set for a while for lunches. Just need to add some fruit or raw veggies on the side. You’ve done great losing so much, I’m sure starting your day off with a smoothie will help you stay the course during the day.
Glad you enjoyed your hummus experiments Donna. I love hummus, could eat it every day, not kidding at all. I have been making my own with no oil or tahini. Honestly, leaving out oil is one thing, but no tahini is kind of sad. At that point I would rather call it “bean spread” rather than hummus. It’s still good, but it’s not hummus. I use it like a condiment on salads/sandwiches, or as a dip for veggies.
My dog is not grooving on daylight savings time. He is used to me working late sometimes, but two days in a row he’s looking at me like ummm… dinner should be by 6:00 at the latest! By his internal clock I’m getting home at 7:00. He’ll adjust but for now he’s a bit annoyed with me. I’m trying to get out of the office reasonably on time the past couple days for him. By next week he should be adjusted.
Another hummus quesadilla for dinner tonight. It was so good!

I'm so glad we don't do daylight savings time in Sask. It sounds miserable.
I start the new job next Thursday already; so quick!! I'm looking forward to it. I've been in my current job for more than 5 years, so I'm ready for something new.
I stayed up way too late with hubby last night talking job and house stuff, and I slept in today. No treadmill. But at least it's swimming and flyer night, so I'll be getting plenty of exercise today.
I did miss my zombies story this morning, though. I like getting my daily dose of post-apocalyptic drama in the mornings, mixed with some tunes to get the blood flowing....0 -
So lucky you don't have to do DST, Karrie. I hate it. I don't like that it is so dark when I get home and I really hate the adjustment in the spring when I lose an hour. Right now I'm just so tired all the time. I feel like getting into my pj's about 7 p.m. lol.
Another busy day and I'm going to get some dinner and head to bed early again. I am going to make a shopping list tonight though, and make time to do food prep this weekend. Thinking the chili and cornbread I never got around to last weekend, and prep veggies for stir-fries and salads this coming week.1 -

I wouldn't call that a 'dump,' unless you are up North, or something?

I wish I was going to bed early, Mihani! We stayed up way too late again last night. There's just too much going on and not enough time during the day to talk and try to figure out what we're doing... It's a bit overwhelming.
So no early morning for me; again. *sigh*
I'm also running out of groceries. Gotta run to the store after work and get some, then scarf something down before my guitar lesson. At least tonight that's the only activity....0 -
You'll have to post a video of you playing one of your pieces Karrie. Would love to hear it!
Gotta get the car to the shop tomorrow so no dawdling in the morning. My boss is picking me up. He's really nice about that when I need to get my car in. I hope it's nothing pricey but it is making whiny creaky noises and seems reluctant to start in the mornings. I kind of feel like my car and I are in the same place lately haha!
Need dinner and bed here. I hope I can get my grocery shopping done tomorrow evening but it may be Saturday. I'm working all weekend of course, but I really need to take some food prep time.

Karrie was it today you started your new job? How did it go?
Mihani - you work so hard on the weekends. I am sure it is hard to find time to shop and prep veggies. I loved the no oil hummus but did add tahini to it. I am making the black bean sweet potato chili tomorrow. I did something stupid today...microwaved our soup in a plastic bowl...took the lid slightly off but then while it was microwaving it pulled the lid back on and we can't get it off ....wasted two whole servings of our favorite roasted vegetable soup ...I usually microwave in glass or ceramic.

Nope, my job starts next week on Thursday. I've got a long weekend today and Monday, so I have 2 more days at my old job to try to get everything organized for my boss and for my replacement. Busy, busy!
You don't even know the bazillionty thing I have to do today. I've cleaned some of the kitchen (not done yet), started the laundry. I have to bake cookies, take my kids to the mall for lunch, buy a present for my DDs friend. Pick up DDs friend to go buy decorations for her party because her parents are working. Pick up another friend so that all 3 girls can go back to the birthday girl's house to decorate. Pick up DSs friend so he can have a play date tonight. Come back home and clean all 3 bathrooms, continue the laundry, make supper and finish cleaning the kitchen. DH is having the guys over for games night tonight, so once everyone is fed and everything is cleaned, then I get to disappear to my room and pretend that I'm not here... (And then I'll be knitting and watching something on Netflix with my headphones on so that I can't hear the boys playing upstairs and the men playing downstairs...) *phew!*
I hope you all have a more relaxing day than me!!0 -
I've told my hubby that I might start getting myself a hotel room on Friday game nights so I can disappear completely...0
-
OMG, that is busy busy. I understand the hotel room, bubble bath, reading a book, watching t.v. and ROOM SERVICE!!! One that has a pool so you can swim.0
-
It is veteran's day so hubby and I played and hour and a half tennis. Now we are going with some friends and dogs up north to a town that has two big parks 4 miles apart with a trail along a river. Hubby is going to drop us off at one end and then park the car at another end and run back to meet us... He has his pt test Nov 22 so he needs to get a 2-3 run in. He is down 13 lbs total so far! After the walk we are going to a place that has great roasted brussel sprouts!

I had a rotten day including the car breaking down before I could get it to the shop and waiting a long time in the cold for a tow which was really late and my boss rescued me and brought me home. Wondering how spendy this is going to be what's wrong with the car? That's what I get for procrastinating. I will catch up with you all more tomorrow. Or is that more procrastination?0
