diarrhea

I'm day 3 back on the keto diet and past 2 days I've had pretty bad diarrhea. Yesterday morning I felt pretty crappy with a headache and body aches so I made a "ketoade" with 1/2 tsp natural calm, 1/4 tsp lo salt for potassium and 1/4 tsp salt. I drank 2 yesterday and 2 today. Is this a normal part of ketosis or more likely the magnesium? Thanks!

I had terrible diarrhea as well but on day 3 started taking a digestive enzyme and probiotic (especially helpful as i dont have a gall bladder) and my problems vanished.0

I had diarrhea too in the beginning. I even had it off and on for the first 2 months, but not at all since then. I did eat a terrible, super sugary diet before starting keto. I think that was a big part of it... sometimes our bodies just need to adjust.1

I feel your pain! I went through the same thing in the first week. I believe that it was the increase in fat and decrease in carbs.0

It could be too much magnesium. Natural Calm is citrate, I think--too much of that is a disaster pants trigger for me! Too much fat before becoming adapted is also a trigger. Go slow as you kcko.1

I vote for the increase in fats without digestion support... Magnesium **CAN** cause it, but it's generally pretty obvious if that's why. With fats being the issue, you might notice a sheen to the water in the toilet basin...or an oily or mucus type factor in the loose stool. That basically means that you're not digesting the fats properly... Even temporary digestive support can make this a non-issue. (Your body has to increase bile production to breakdown the fats, and you must be consistent in your intake for that to happen. The slower this increase in bile, you likely have impairment in your gallbladder, liver, or glucose management system - so it's worth having tests for fatty liver, gallbladder disease/dysfunction, and standard blood sugar/insulin/thyroid tests done to rule out other factors... Stomach tests for digestive enzyme function can be more complicated, pricey, and invasive. It's worth ruling out other factors first, but probiotics likely can't hurt...0

Should've mentioned I have no gallbladder!0

I personally recommend a digestive enzyme with ox bile. They are the only ones I use anymore. I prefer the NOW Brand Super Enzyme, though others are rated as better (but also more expensive). These are the best of the 4 or 5 I've tried for my system. At my most intense Keto, I had to take 2 enzymes per meal, as per all the keto guru recommendations, but it improved my digestion incredibly.0

Diarrhea is no walk in the park (or anywhere else polite company might congregate), but it does have one tiny silver lining - no one questions it as an excuse (for example missing school or work, not getting homework done, failing to scoop litter boxes or do dishes.....).5

I almost forgot - this article was critical in helping me get to the root of things!

I'm going to put in a good word for powdered psyllium husk. It's almost pure dietary fibre, tasteless and easily added/hidden in just about all the food I prepare. It may not be a solution, but I'm pretty sure it can't hurt anything.1

In my case I finally realized it was the high dosage of magnesium? I cut it too much and had the opposite problem. In my case my supplement needs seem to change from time to time.1
