January Resolutions...

2018 arrives and the new year begins...
The gym is packed to the hilt with resolution folks, coming to spend a few days pretending to get back into shape.
For those of us who are regulars, the resolution folks are often kind of annoying because they often don't follow gym etiquette about wiping down, putting away equipment or working in together. Not to mention asking many, many questions.
I keep reminding myself that I was once a newbie and, even now, my knowledge base isn't as good as I would like... So I make the extra effort to be friendly and supportive.
I suspect I sell a good number of people on personal training as I recommend getting a trainer for both educational and motivational support.
Did anyone make any interesting resolutions?

Hahaha.. Happy New Year everyone! I am not a gym person altho lord knows I have tried over the years. Experience tells me that it is always a waste of my money because I won't go after a while.
As far as January resolutions. For the first time since I was 15 or 16? (now 59) I actually did NOT make a resolution (usually a secret internal one) to lose weight. Because I don't need to. I think every year since I was a teenager I either had a secret hope or started a new diet in January (just like the rest of the overweight population). But I have been in maintenance now since Oct and my only resolution this year is to continue to maintain my weight and clean up my house of old JUNK.
My brother and I took care of my parents house after they passed away a few years ago, and except for a few mementos a lot of things which we knew were precious to them, ended up in the trash. That was a life lesson. So now I look thru my house as I organize and purge and think "would any of my family want this or does it have dollar value which they might sell?" If the answer is no, then it gets given away or trashed. I really don't need to hold on to all those tennis and riding trophies from the 70's do I? Can't I just take a picture of them now?
And when people ask me about resolutions at work etc I always answer that I am giving up smoking and drinking. Because well, I don't do those anyway so I always keep those resolutions.
I am the REVERSE resolution person. And January is my least favorite month of the year so it's almost half done. yeah!1 -
I'm not really a resolution person, but I do tend to set goals at the beginning of the year. Goals this year? One race a month, including 7 OCRs, survive my daughter's wedding in 16 days, finish writing my book, grow my Etsy store. It's going to be an interesting year!2

In yoga class, the instructors usually talk about setting intentions instead of resolutions. I'm not sure I completely appreciate the difference but I think it's something like resolutions are a line in the sand vs intentions recognize change is usually incremental rather than radical.0

I couldn't settle down enough to make a specific resolution. I have so many things that need working on. So I am just resolving go do the best I can and not beat up on myself so much.2

I resolve to be no more of an arsehole than I’ve been in 2017.3

The population at the gym has already started to thin out. That seems earlier than previous years.

IME, the resolution-motivated temporary gym-goers hereabouts fade away faster if the weather is bad. Snow, ice, bad driving conditions, extra-cold weather for a week or so can be enough, for some, to kill the embryonic new habit. Makes me sad to see so many go every year - they're missing out on so many good returns on time invested.
I do try to encourage those I talk with, introduce myself to & welcome new people in my classes, and greet in friendly fashion anyone I meet in the halls or locker room.
Personally, I don't do NY resolutions. I try to be thoughtful about life and habits, consider ways to improve, and pick a change to act on when the idea ripens. I can only think of one time in my life, decades ago, when that coincidentally happened around New Years (mainly because I had extra solo reflection time over the holidays that year, I think).2 -
I don’t set new year resolutions ... I think their doomed for failure. How many people do we know who set themselves a resolutions to fail within weeks( often like the gym goers your talking about UnckeMac). This leave people feeling depressed etc.
I set myself a goal of achieving something everyday. No matter how small ( eating more fruit, drinking more water etc) or large ( de clutter a room) . Little steps will take u to a long road.

I also don't do NY resolutions.1 -
I don’t do resolutions, but I did quit Facebook. Don’t miss that drama a bit.1

As January comes skidding to an end, it's noteworthy that at the fitness centre where I work out, there are more people in the gym now than the first week of the resolution press. That's not typical.1

That’s encouraging. Over the past few years I think more people stick to making positive changes in their lives.2
