We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for January are:

Monday - GadgetGirlIL (Regina)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)

Today's Topic: Red Light, Green Light

No, I'm not talking about the game some of us played as a child. Years ago, WW talked about "red light" foods -- the ones that you found you needed to be cognizant of overeating easily. Green light foods were those that were "safe" to eat.

So what are some of your red light foods? How do you deal with them? What are your green light foods -- the ones you feel you can eat safely without overdoing things?

Pizza and potato chips. It is so bad with potato chips that I can't have them in the house.

I really love ice cream and have to be careful because its usually in the house.
Apples are my safeties and try to keep plenty on hand for snacking.

Those who know me would think that chocolate would be at the top of the list of red light foods for me. But they would be wrong! My greatest "red light" foods are anything like chips and/or crackers -- potato chips, Doritos, Cheez-its, saltine crackers, Ritz crackers, Wheat Thins, anything that's salty and crunchy -- if it crunches, I can't seem to control myself. If I sit down with a bag, tube, or box the whole thing will be gone before I even realize it.

I refuse to give these things up forever so I pre-measure them and put them in ziplock bags in a serving size. When I'm craving something salty and crunchy, I eat ONE bag of them. Now that I'm tracking with MFP, I also track whatever it is because I know how easy it is for me to "forget" that I've eaten them. I have a magnetic notepad on my fridge. If I'm not ready to track something (not in front of my computer or phone), I jot it down on the notepad.

My green light foods are vegetables and fruits. I keep apples, oranges, and clementines in a bowl on my counter so that I can grab one easily. Even if I do "forget" to track one of them, I know I'm okay.

Red light foods include brownies. Most every other dessert that I make, I can put the leftovers in the freezer and not obsess about them. But if there are brownies in the house, they are very hard to resist.

I can't eat anything crunchy right out of a container, unless I want to call that container a serving. If I portion it out, I'm usually good at stopping at a portion. I'll put these type of foods in the yellow category.

Green light foods are my homemade chicken veggie soup, eggs, salsa, No Cow bars, almonds. All things that are always around if I find myself hungry and without other viable options. But nothing that I would ever overeat.

Red light foods: peanuts and peanut butter

My best example of a green light is fresh fruit (apples and bananas most often)

If it's sweet it's just about hit the red light list. it's so hard for me to limit them. I like to keep the chocolate kisses in the pantry just so I can have 1 or 2 and that a lot of times will give me that satisfaction for the sweet tooth. Brownies, Cakes and most any type sugary type desert are definitely red light.

My green light foods are just about any type of vegetables since I love most any vegetable. Recently started to eat a boiled egg in the morning and maybe one for a snack during the day. I love smooth peanut butter and prefer the crunchy but have to look out for the point difference.

I don't have sweets or salty treats in the house. I don't miss them if they aren't right in front of me. Out of sight out of mind for me

Red light maybe pizza. I mostly just don't eat it. Sometimes chocolate . Green for veggies, lean protein.
I keep some things out of house. I don't want cashews in house.

Red light foods: baked goods, Chinese food, BBQ, beer. I deal with all of these the same way: moderation--much more than I ever used to. I eat them only occasionally now whereas they used to be things I would eat weekly and lots at a time! Not only do I eat them less frequently, but also less of them at any given time. I still enjoy the flavors but I've been able to curb my foodlust for them and that has definitely helped me manage my weight!

Green light foods: Well, I'm starting to wonder if there are any because I keep fighting about three pounds regardless of what I do. However, I have done pretty well with eggs, poultry, fruits and vegetables. I don't go nuts with any of them but I feel like they give me a little more latitude to eat more of them and still manage my weight. I appreciate the recent addition of eggs and poultry (breast meat only) to WW's 0-point food list. It's a mental tweak that has helped me feel a little less diet-like on my plan.
