We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for February are:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - jasper60103 (Jasper

Today's Topic: Sleep with respect to weight management

(We've done this before, but not in a while.) Does your sleep quantity and / or quality affect your weight management? Have you deliberately changed anything sleep-related for positive effects on the weight aspect?

Well this is a timely topic as I've been struggling to get back into my normal sleep pattern. With the bouts of viruses my DH and I had in January, I ended up using cough syrup at night for nearly 4 weeks. I've been off the cough syrup 2 weeks now but keep waking up in the middle of the night not able to fall back asleep for an hour or so. Last night was the trifecta at 1:30am as I had a lot on my mind because of stuff that came up at work yesterday, I was hungry, and my shoulders were aching.

When I more fatigued, I find myself hungrier and more prone to make less than desirable food choices.

I'm not sure what the resolution is although I did sleep well the nights when I had done a lot of snowshoeing and bike riding during the day! While I love those activities, it is hard to get in significant time doing them during the work week, not to mention they are weather/snow dependent.

I’m having an extremely rough time sleeping and it causes problems in a lot of ways.

Focus. I need to concentrate to make good decisions. Hard without sleep.

Then there’s just the practical aspect. More time awake is more time to eat. If I wake up at 4 am. I want breakfast at 6. Ugh.

I wake up a lot at night. Sometimes I fall asleep but a lot of times it will take hrs. till I can fall bake to sleep. I don't know how it affects my weight loss but I'm sure it is.

I don't see much bearing. Of course, being retired, if I'm exhausted, I usually nap.

    PSA,
I went for CPAP test about same time I joined WW. Very good decision! I sleep well now with CPAP,

If any of you have sleep issues you should discuss CPAP with your PCP.

The results of my first tests scared me :flushed:

So glad I took the test and fixed the problem.

I do make it a point to get the best sleep I can. I haven't noticed a 1:1 correlation with weight loss for me.

I find that I need significantly less sleep now than I did when I was much heavier. So, I think any cause and effect is the reverse. As in, better weight control causes me to sleep less (and feel more energetic). Sleeping less doesn't cause impact on my weight, that I can notice.

I think when I'm tired it is harder for me to make tough decisions. I'm more inclined to NOT make the better choice.

    Thanks all for your responses.

The reason I asked is because I often hear at my WW meeting that not enough rest leads to poor choices. For a variety of reasons, up until recently I'd put myself in the 'not enough rest' category (or sleep-interrupted--mostly by our animals). It often made me tired but I really never felt it had any bearing on my food choices.

We have recently found a solution that usually keeps pet disruption to a minimum. I do feel much better-rested, but that's about it.
