Sticker Shock!

That term came to mind yesterday when I stepped on the scale. I remember first hearing the term Sticker Shock used when looking at new cars. When you would see a car you liked then see the price on the invoice taped to the window you were like OMG!!!
That happened to me when I stepped on the scale at my pool yesterday and saw I was up five pounds from my last Official WW WI last Thursday! At first I thought "Oh some one must have messed with the scale!" LoL DENIAL DENIAL DENIAL
Then I calmed down and thought of what I had eaten since my last WI. OK I had a Belgium waffle and bacon on Sat. I bought some turkey sausage and had that knowing processed food has SODIUM! I have been lax in not getting my usual amount of steps and swimming laps. I KNOW weight fluctuates, I KNOW water weight can be impacted by sodium, I KNOW I didn't really gain FIVE pounds!
So today "most" of the Phantom Five pounds was gone. I did do some extra laps today anf thought about how EASY it would be to gain weight if I wasn't constantly "trying" to lose weight. (Ref Recent LTL Topic)
I will be curious to see what my Official WW WI is tomorrow. The Sticker Shock at my WW WI are usually due to a "Large" loss (anything near two pounds). My last big gain of 3.8 in early January took me a few weeks to lose. The Pool scale and the WW sale never match because I HAVE to wear clothes at WW! LoL!
I'm rambling a bit but I wondered if other GoaDs have dealt with Sticker Shock at the Scale? How do you react when the Scale surprises you? (either Good or Bad?)

It has been a long time since I experienced Sticker Shock at the scale because I've been tracking my daily weights in Happy scale for nearly 5 years now. Thus a big jump after a long endurance effort where I had to use electrolyte capsules to keep cramping in bay is completely expected. So is a significant dip if I had a long, sweaty event in the summer. In those cases, the scale is either down a couple of pounds or at the weight pre-event. It is the 48 hour later weigh-in when my fluid balance starts to recover that it often shifts way up before finally leveling off later in the week.2

Denial is my first choice. This happened to me a few weeks ago. When denial only got me a .4 loss 2 days later, I logged onto MFP and started tracking. That’s working better.2

That 48 hr tip is a good reminder. Knowing that my Official WW WI is Thursday Morning I can limit sodium intake Pre WI.
Thanks.

Denial is our first line of defense!
Then reality kicks us in the gut!0 -
Sticker shock evens itself out (and, as you implied, goes both ways). Which is why both daily weights and trendlines are important.
Denial is a good approach. And reasonable for the first shocking WI. By two, there's a suspicion something else is going on and three 'shocking' WI's means it's time to give more consideration to the results as being meaningful.
This works most of the time for me. Except when I'm in denial.0 -

I had recent experience with exactly this. Two was the charm for me; got my act back together and honed my intake for a few weeks. Back to where I have wanted to be for months now. It does work, but only if you work it...0
