LCHF causing caustic, chemical-smelling poop?

When I'm off the LCHF wagon and eating 100+ grams of carbs/day, my poop smells like poop. But as soon as I'm back on board with LCHF, my poop becomes toxic smelling. I'm talking it smells like an overheated clutch plus overheated brakes plus old-fashioned hair perming solution all concentrated together in one caustic, burning, eye-watering chemical stench. It doesn't smell even remotely like poop or anything organic. It smells like chemicals. It also usually comes out as liquid, but even the solid turds smell like that.

Does keto cause this? Or is my gallbladder not handing the fats? (I do 4 Tbl heavy cream for breakfast, cheese and a vegetable for lunch, and supper is meat or cheese and more vegetables). I would think I would have explosive diarrhea soon after my heavy cream breakfast if it were my gallbladder, but it's usually after supper that I have the runs. There's no pain or cramping, either. Just toxic waste.

Help! My family is ready to disown me for violating their airspace every night!

Maybe ease up on the cheese? Worth a try. Less dairy sometimes works for folks. I have stinky pee but the poops are not as 'nasty' for me when I'm low carb. This is just a general straight-up TMI thread, lol.

Maybe invest in some gas masks for the family lol I agree with perhaps easing up on the dairy and see if that helps

I too saw HWC, cheese and cheese in the details and wondered if there might be an increase in dairy products and therefore a newly discovered lactose intolerance resulting the explosions.

The only thing that has ever caused me an issue was when I decided to be prudent and take a multi vitamin. It took me 2 weeks to figure that one out because who woulda thunk a multi vitamin? I quit taking it was fine.

When I have artificial sweeteners, I sometimes get a chemical smell and get slightly sick. Most artificial sweeteners are really bad for me. I seem to not be able to tolerate them.

The advice to cut back on the dairy might be worth taking. A lot of people are lactose intolerant or sensitive and don't know it. High fat meals will cause some utterly devastating poos once in a while. I've noticed that staying away from preservatives, most artificial sweeteners, and incorporating a little more fiber (salads and whole veggies) tend to calm the stench. Your gut fauna is going through a change on this WOE so it could be part of the reason as well.

The longer food stays in your colon, the worse it smells...is it possible that the extra fat in LCHF is moving things along at a faster pace and ridding you of stuff that has been sitting around a while decomposing in your colon?

Any sugar alcohols like maltitol in your diet?

Wooohoo! You got that right as a possibility. Most are definitely an explosion producing agent for me so I purposely keep them out of my diet.

You guys are awesome! Thanks! Love the gas mask idea, too.

I don't use any artificial sweeteners because they destroy me with cramps and explosions.

The stenchy stinks continue many months (9 months was my last stretch) into me staying on the wagon, so I'm not sure that an adjustment period or years of decomposing deposits are to blame.

I've been a cheese-a-holic my whole life and used to drink milk at meals instead of water. I've never had even a hint of lactose sensitivity. I'm not really eating any more cheese than I used to. When I'm being bad and having donuts with my cheese, the stink goes away, so it really seems to be tied to carbs.

I probably should ask my doc, but honestly, I'm afraid he'd ask me to bring in a sample, and then OSHA and the EPA would have to get involved. You guys are at least protected by the fume firewall of the internet!

Perhaps some soluble fiber will help...flaxseed meal. Psyllium. They're basically zero net carb. SOLUBLE fiber binds to water to create a gel. I'm not a doc. Just a suggestion from Dr. Google. :) Seems like a little bulk would be favorable to your current situation.

Cheese/Ca2+, Fe2-3+ are generally constipating & cause hardening of the stool. Hate to ask you this, but what color? Pale/clay colored could be a concern (liver). You could be overdoing the fats resulting in an oily/"liquidy" stool (malabsorption/steatorrhea) not being able to absorb all of the fats.

Yeah definitely lay off the cheese (barring cheat meals/low frequency etc.). Evaluate what you regular dietary fiber intake is because peoples' definition of "keto"/low carbs can mean lots of things (constipation/abnormal BMs usually are not a problem with lots of LC vegetables).

Bulking agent of choice should you need one: Calcium polycarbophil (fibercon) useful in normalizing BMs (actually useful for both IBS-C & IBS-D). Tablet form is fine, alternative psyllium husk/dry powder - can be a bit troublesome due to gagging/not drinking enough H2O after (one of the few OTCs showing benefit for wight loss).

Feel free to PM me, I regularly talk to people about BMs on a daily basis as a part of my job...
