We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for February are:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - jasper60103 (Jasper)

Today's topic: Stress

Are you a stress eater/drinker?
How can you work around it?

So, ok. I'm stealing the WW Weekly again.
I definately can be a stress eater. The only thing I can seem to do is go to bed. Can't seem to find any other way to shut it off.

I'm a stress non-eater. Something happens with my stomach during high stress, and food just doesn't appeal. I realized awhile back that I might be an anger eater, though.

Thanks for taking this on Al.

    Stress?

    More bored eater.

But this- I’ve noticed that I can be an outright angry eater. As in I just want to bite and chew.
Not so good on my stomach though. Not very relaxing either.

Yes, I'm a stress eater. If I can get outside for some physical activity, that really helps to relieve the stress and reduce the urge to eat for reasons other than hunger.

I had a pretty stressful meeting on Tuesday regarding the future of my program as well as my employment. Because I had come to work so early that day for a test in our lab, I was able to slip out at 2pm and head to the arboretum for a nice long walk in the 60 degree temps we were having. That really helped stop any stress eating that day.

Nope. If I'm stressed, I (literally) can't eat. During a particularly stressful event in my life in 1994, I lived on Diet Dr. Pepper and about 5 Cheez-its a day for a month. I lost 24 pounds in 30 days. And that was by the scale in the doctor's office.

Yes, I'm a stress eater. I retired. That fixed almost all of my stress.

Guilty! Don't know why, I just am. Back in the day I was a joy eater too but the stress part seemed to stay with me long-term.

Although I never did it back then, now I really try to figure out what the stressor is. Most of the time it's a timeline, commitment, financial challenge, etc. that's driving it. I've learned that obviously, eating will do absolutely nothing to change the situation. So I look for ways--things that are within my control--to do so. A lot of times there's something I can do but sometimes not. Identifying the source of stress, regardless of whether I can do anything usually prevents me from mindless eating.

There are times though that I still eat in response to stress. Most of the time I do it more mindfully than I ever did it before paying closer attention. The difference is I eat no- or low-point stuff now compared to cookies, chips, etc. then. I know what I'm doing but honestly I think the drive to eat is just the old habit. I realized it wasn't actually the behavior that was doing me in, it was my choices. So I usually make a better choice.

Extreme stress like Mamacin I am a non-eater. I did eat a burger and fries after finishing my taxes though. More a hedonic eater when I see something I really like.
