Winter Riding

Our season starts March/April with the first event April 28. So my plan for the duration of the winter is to have a riding lesson (indoor arena) once a week. At home with Thor I will start with hand walking and get back to riding also AT LEAST once per week but preferably 2 or 3. To supplement this I will continue once per week w my trainer emphasizing core and legs and yoga twice weekly. In addition, I will do mini workouts at home incl yoga stretches some arm work and squats. So weekly as follows:
Riding Lesson Mon or Fri
Trainer Work out Mon or Wed
Yoga Tune Up Thurs
Yoga Yin Thurs
Mini Home Workouts Tues Wed Fri
Thor Time Tues Fri Sat
Yoga and trainer start next week but have done yoga and minis at home everyday this week
Did first riding lesson yesterday (went pretty good)
Outside work with Thor is all hold until we warm up a bit. Temps have been been -25C but -35 with windchill which doesn’t work for me or Thor
My plan is to report weekly unless something interesting happens.

Sounds like a great plan! My first show is in 101 days. Due to the back problems I've had this past year, I plan to put a lot of focus on core strength and overall flexibility. So, lots of yoga! To make sure I'm ready for xc, I will continue with spin classes and start adding running back in this week. I've always had several horses to ride to keep fit, but I only have one (plus some w/t on my retired one) to work with now so I want to really make sure I'm overall fit. My trainer is in Florida until April so I will haul to a trainer friend to jump with when I can. I'm going to set up a tripod in the indoor today so I can video my rides to make sure I'm on the right track. I'm so excited for this year, I just hope my back and my horse can hold up! I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we're both in as good of shape as we can be!0

Excellent re getting u n yr horse in the best shape possible. Jealous you can keep riding. I will work hard on me n Thor when weather permits. Just got a foot of snow so going to get him out this aft. Wed Thurs is ice rain. Fri rain then back into the deep freeze. Hope everything isnt sheer ice before the cold returns. Not going to stress. Takes Thor less time to get into shape than me0

Managed a short ride but came home late so it was short and in the dark with heavy winds. My mounting blocks are both frozen into the ground so used the bench on the picnic table which is full of ice and verrry slippery. Thor was a trooper as I lost my balance and pulled the saddle half around before I got my act in gear and tush in the saddle. He didn’t like the wind n blowing snow though but we did get out .1

Good for you! It was in the 40's today and I opted to not ride b/c of the winds. All of the snow has melted and everything is flooding, even my indoor What a mess! I free jumped my guys so at least they got a little bit of a workout. In the 50's tomorrow so if the winds aren't too bad, I'll definitely have to ride1

Another 30-45 min today. Up and down the lane. He was very good ie not trying to jig home n get back to his girls. Decided to try the back field but the only access was via the fence line and he kept sinking into drifts up to his chest. He didn’t like it - neither did I. So we turned around and did the lane again. He was very good about it. The lane is kinda boring but it is something. Friday is my lesson so at least getting in the saddle this winter which I dont usually (never!!!) do. Hope the winds cooperate for you tomorrow. We have freezing rain tonight, rain tomorrow then back into the freezer with snow coming Saturday. Yeah. Snow on top of ice. Perfect for riding. NOT!!!1

Week 3
What can I say. Man makes plans and God laughs .
My first two weeks went quite well then life happened last Sat. Woke up to a flooded basement. We had a flash freeze Fri nite after some warming weather. The pipes the sump pump use to keep water moving were full of water and froze solid. The pump simply died. Sun nite with temps at about -10C our furnace proved it had been hurt by the flood and died. On top of this we have been working on severing some property to sell. The process has been painful and slow, filled with bureaucracy. Last week this started to move forward. So I spent my week cleaning, boxing up stuff, lawyer and township meetings, meetings with insurance adjuster and clean up crew and on and on.
Mon: Personal Trainer 60 min
Riding at home 30 min
Tues: Yoga 75 min
Wed: Riding at home 30 min
Thurs: Yoga 75 min
Fri: Riding lesson cancelled but rode at home 30 min

Food was on track as were my carbs and yet I didn’t lose a pound — Stress???
This coming week I have come up w a new schedule which includes training Thor for our first event April 28-29: a 10 mile Ride ‘n Tie Sat and a 25 mile ride Saturday. Still have insurance and severance stuff to deal with but fingers crossed, nothing like this past week.2 -
I feel your pain! Our well pump went out and obviously had to get it replaced. Mother nature has not been cooperating at all so life on the farm has been more challenging than usual. No plan for last week worked out for me either I've been thinking all day today that maybe I shouldn't make plans and then I wouldn't feel so crappy and disappointed in myself. I decided that if I don't have a planned schedule, things definitely won't get done so I just made mine up for the week and hopefully there won't be any catastrophes!
Yay for getting a goal! We can do this!2 -
“ .... maybe I shldnt make plans .....”
I hear that. My Mon lesson was cancelled by my trainer due to her recent surgery. I was going to ride here as it was only -5C but when I went out discovered it was -15 with the wind chill. I’m too big a wimp for that. Tues Yoga was cancelled due to ice rain so I’m guessing riding is out of the question around here for a while as everything is a skating rink. Tomorrow is my workout, Thurs is my all morning yoga - God willing that will go as planned. On a happy note had a spa day today - mani, pedi, massage, facial and hair . Feel great but now have to go out and muck out stalls. Hope my horses appreciate my new look.2 -
That is cold!! I would die!
So funny that you had a spa day before doing stalls. LOL. I'm sure the horses were impressed.1 -
Week 4
Mon: Riding lesson 60 min. — Cancelled by instructor as she had surgery Friday and wasn’t up to giving lessons yet
Tues: Yoga 75 min — Cancelled by instructor because of ice rain and dangerous driving
Wed: Personal Trainer 60 min — Great challenging class.
Wed: Riding at home 30 min— way too icy. Literally like a skating rink.
Thurs: Yoga 150 min — double class. Flow, followed by tune up balls followed by Yin.
Sat — Yoga at home plus mini workout
Sun — NA — company.
Food on track
So plan is not 100%.
Cannot ride at home because of the ice. Last couple of days were just above freezing but that actually made it worse as there was water on top of the ice. Not sure what will fix it except the arrival of spring. Calling for colder weather this week and a colder than average February so pretty sure the ice is here to stay. The stable is a few yards from our back door. I have been driving to it as the ice is that bad. Thor actually slipped coming in and went down to one knee but he seemed ok. It is just treacherous. My trainer is going to come out to try and find a safe place to ride Thor. If she finds one she will make a route for me to follow and ride with me when possible .... she is a litter braver than I and a much better rider.
Riding lessons may also be an issue. Riding today but my knee surgery is Friday and do not yet know what my recovery time will be but pretty sure next week at least will be a write-off and maybe 2 weeks. Hopefully no more than that. Am looking forward to being pain free at least on my left side. It is affecting my hip, back and neck now. The pain is very boring and affects everything I do.
Yoga will be good this week but, again, with surgery Friday not sure when I can get back to it. Ditto for my mini workouts. Plan to stick to it this week and then see what the surgeon has to say.
I don’t want to wish my life away but really looking forward to April.

Addendum - my instructor cancelled our lesson today as she had her first physio this morning and it knocked her out. So no lessons now til maybe end of Feb or March due to my surgery this Fri. My trainer stopped by and said it was way too icy here to ride so there goes my winter riding aspirations for the foreseeable future. Will kick up yoga and my workouts so that when I CAN ride I will be ready - at least this week and once my surgeon gives me the go ahead to start up again.
Just a little frustrated.0 -
Mon: Riding lesson 60 min. — Cancelled by instructor at last minute as she had her first physio which totally drained her. Understandable but
Tues: Yoga 75 min — Excellent class. Mainly hip strengtheners. Class after ours was cancelled so she went for almost 1 1/2 hrs instead of 75 min
Wed: Mini workout - more hips, yoga flows, squats, balance and plank.
Thurs: Yoga 150 min — double class. Flow, followed by tune up balls followed by Yin. More hip work. Just what I need
Food on track
Riding at home 30 min— just simply too much ice. My trainer won’t even ride and she is fearless. Not sure when Thor n I will get out again. Sigh.
So that is it for me for a while. Had my knee surgery today (Fri) so the next several days are all about leg elevation and ice packs. See my surgeon Feb 14th when he will give me a good idea of when I can return to my life. Fingers crossed it is only for 2 or at worse 3 weeks.0 -
Great job with the yoga! I've given up on riding consistently this winter, even though I have an indoor. It's just too dang cold
Hoping for a quick recovery!1 -
Thanks! February is always a long month but this one is going to be extra challenging. Already bored but iI move around my leg gets very angry. Must say, very jealous of your indoor arena. Must come in handy when the cold isn’t so extreme. It is on my wish list.0

I am so bored...and cold! Last night it was snowing, but there was no wind and it was so bright and quiet out that I decided to go for a ride. We just walked around the pastures and enjoyed the peace. I normally go south for the winter and have plans in place to go next winter for a couple of months. Although I enjoyed my ride last night, I'd rather be jumping and galloping on cross country! Hope the knee is doing better1
-
Wow. Riding at night in snow fall. One of the few beautiful equestrian things only possible in winter. We too are considering heading south next winter. Do you take your horse(s)?0
-
yep, I take my horses to Aiken, SC. This is the first time in 6 years I've been stuck in IL.1

Last week was my first week halfway back after surgery
Mon zilch
Tues 75 min yoga
Wed 60 weights class
Thurs 120 min yoga
And that was it for the week. Leg was definitely sore after sitting around for 2 weeks and especially my left hip and calf although I actually had knee surgery. Everything is connected.
Start back riding next Mon ... March 5th. Nervous but hopeful.1 -

Rough week as I caught a bug that started Monday night and built thru the week. Lots of sneezing and coughing. My husband is concerned as it sounds like I have fluid in my lungs so going to emerge today to check it out and to get an inhaler as my current one is off code. I have asthma but it only rears it’s ugly head every two or three years when I get sick like this.
Friday went to an NKT therapist re my shoulder and hip issues. My shoulder has been getting progressively worse over the past few months. I injured it years ago during an unscheduled dismount from my then horse, Theo. My hip has also been bugging me a lot - pretty sure it’s from that knee but really need to get everything moving better w minimal pain.
Great news is we went to visit a friend and her 16 hand purebred Arabian horse yesterday. They went for a ride and my hubby Tom fell in love. Toi is almost 18 but an amazing horse. He has done 50s and 75s plus dressage and jumping. Anither friends horse is still going strong and he’s 25 - still doing 50s. Last year he did a 75 and got Best Condition. The best part is our friend was the breeder for Toms current horse, Dolly and wants her back for her niece. So it will be a direct trade - Dolly for Toi. And Tom, who pretty much only rides at events is planning his training schedule so that will be fun for all of us. Lots of riding together. Fingers crossed for an amazing season.0 -
Last week ...

Thurs 120 min yoga

Another rough week. Asthma kicked in big time. Went to Emergency and got drugs and a new inhaler but still horrible chest cough and of course it is worse when I lie down ... so no sleeping.
This week is not looking much better. Hospital said the bug I have lasts about 3-4 weeks and this is week 3. Plus contractors from insurance are going to be here for 2-3 weeks finally fixing flooded basement. Not comfortable leaving strangers alone in my house so pretty sure workout class, riding lessons and yoga are on hold til they are done. Also, to continue with my negative diatribe, it is -10C AGAIN so very difficult to be motivated to do anything. Also calling for more snow. Real Spring w warmer weather isn’t arriving til May. Not sure I will make it .0
