We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for March are:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - Calvin2008Brian
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard

Today's Topic: Binge Behaviors

Do you have/have you ever had an issue with binge behavior(s) when it comes to eating/drinking or other aspects of your health/wellness? If so, what do you/did you do to manage/overcome the behavior(s)?

Bonus Questions: Did you watch the Oscars? What was your favorite movie this year? (Doesn't have to be an Oscar nominee.)

Yes. It seems to have come in cycles over the years. I really struggled in 2004-2005 when my father's health was rapidly declining and his dementia was getting worse. Everything wrong in his life was my fault according to him. I ate my feelings then tried to exercise off the excess food. That didn't end well as I got high hamstring tendonopathy from overuse and that ended my running for many years.

As for how I overcame it? Not really sure. I did back off of logging any exercise activities as that seemed to just feed the cycle. I still exercised but didn't care about time, speed, distance, etc. Eventually the drive to binge eat faded and what I now might term a binge isn't anything like I used to do.

Maybe part of it was age. There were situations when I was younger where I felt powerless and then turned to food. Now I don't give a damn about fitting in with others. I'm comfortable marching to the beat of a different drummer. That has been very empowering.

No, I don't watch the Oscars and I rarely see any movies. You don't want me on your team for Trivial Pursuit.

I definatly have, at the least, minor binges. 60-100 SP days (usually the weekend, fueled by beer or wine).
Trying to throttle it, but, although better at it, it's still a major issue.

Oscars? Couldn't care less. Favorite film? Last Jedi.

In the past (many years ago thank heavens) I definitely had some binge behaviors - especially with things like chips and crackers. I finally learned to rein those in! I haven't had a good binge in a long time -- unless you count binge watching things on NetFlix :)

Didn't watch the Oscars. Haven't seen a movie in a theater in a LONG time.

I don't binge the way I've heard some people do. I do overeat sometimes. Recently I tried to cut back my calories too much and ended up eating a small box of crackers.

I do better if I don't let myself get too hungry and to always mix in lots of fruits and vegetables with my meals. When I'm really hungry, the carbs start calling me. Nothing wrong with carbs in moderation but a whole box of crackers is not moderation.

    Nope, didn't watch the Oscars.

There are certain foods I can easily binge on, and I try to keep them out of the house or buy in small quantities. I have noticed lately that carbs have become problematic as I wrestle with some emotional eating situations, but being aware of it seems to have helped quite a bit.

Oscars, my back situation make it difficult to make it to the movies unless it is via Netflix or On Demand ($). I hope to view some of the documentaries they show. Frankly my favorite film last year was Wonder Woman.

I overeat, but have never really binged--at least not what I understand to be the contemporary definition. There's a woman in my WW meeting who used to eat anything and everything to the point that she'd "puke" every night. She felt ashamed and really didn't understand why she was doing it, but she did it daily anyway. She also said she did a lot of that binge eating in secrecy--either alone or hiding evidence. Her stories made me grateful that I had not gotten to that level. She's doing really well on WW now and I hope that continues for her.

No Oscars. Favorite movies are home movies of the pets. We gotta do what what we can to stay entertained out in the hinterlands... B)

My binge lasted about 12 years. I eased into it at first, but the last 8 years was 2 big drinking and eating adventures just about every week. It’s what I planned my life around.

Overcome it? First I quit drinking. If I went out, it was show up, eat and leave. The just hanging around consuming calories ended. When I saw what a great thing weight loss was I wanted more. Mostly just replaced bad habits with better habits.

    No Oscars for years.

My best help with GoaDs was my learning to stop Mindless Eating. That helped me stop binging once I learned that Mindless Eating was a big lesson I learned.

I could very easily eat a whole bag of _______ (???) but I I never want to now. Thank God!

I saw one nominated Oscar movie, Three Billboards. I absolutely hated it and I have officially gotten over watching movies. I have a gift coupon for a movie No hurry to see anything.

I'd never thought of myself as a binge eater because my context for that term was someone who consistently binged and/or binged and purged. Neither applied to me.

However, on more careful reflection, I think I have binge tendencies now and again and often enough to acknowledge it and try to develop a real-time strategy. It's always snack food - - salty or sweet, and I don't think it has anything to do with deprivation because I don't consider anything off-limits. I do however limit access, so when I'm faced with an abundance of readily available snack food for days on end, (e.g. holidays) I will likely WAY over-eat in a way that I'd term bingeing. I also lead a big fundraiser each year that involves a lot of baking. When I think about what (and how) I consumed last year leading up to that event testing recipes and following the event with leftovers, I can only label it bingeing. Part of my strategy this year will be getting samples and leftovers out of my house ASAP. But, I still need to think about the behavior a bit more to see if something besides access is driving it. More to come if I have any insights.

    I forgot the Oscars question.

I usually LOVE the Oscars and enjoy the pre and post coverage. However this year I found it all a bit too much. I started watching pre-coverage/interviews and thought, "Oh my God, you're all so annoying! Shut up!" So I only watched the actual show.

I didn't see all the movies like I normally do but loved The Shape of Water and The Big Sick.

My binges food/beverages, ice cream being the biggest are from emotional stress which I am getting better at controlling. I don't do it as much now.
