We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for March are:

Today's Topic: Let’s Talk Breakfast
Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Or a nuisance? Or just not hungry in the morning?
Has breakfast changed for you during your weight loss journey? Does your breakfast plan help or hinder your efforts?

I have the same thing for breakfast almost every day; bran cereal, greek yogurt and blueberries. Oh yes, coffee for sure. Years ago, I didn't eat breakfast. It was hard not to get a snack mid morning. All available snack were high calorie e.g. a muffin.
I put greek yogurt on my cereal because I have problems digesting milk. The greek yogurt also has more protein than regular yogurt.0 -
A protein rich breakfast starts my day off on a good note. I look forward to my veggie omelette everyday. I wake up hungry.0

I’m in the most important meal camp now. I think I can explain my whole up and down weight odyssey in terms of breakfast.
Looking back, I was what we would call- not a morning person. I would drag myself out of bed at the last minute. I couldn’t even think about food.
But come lunch, I’d be out of my mind. Charge into the closest fast food I could find and scarf it down.
Then I got in a situation where I really had to function in the morning. I could not skip breakfast. Enter the Raisin Bran years. This coincided with an upward march of the scale. So I was eating breakfast, but my choices were not helping me a bit.
Then I discovered oatmeal. Plain old rolled oats Quaker. A game changer. I was greatly aided at WW by the fact that breakfast was in place when I started. But I did add a WW smoothie to breakfast for a while.
Fast forward to about a year ago. My breakfast smoothie was long gone. Just as an experiment I started adding egg protein powder to my oatmeal. With no other obvious changes, I’m down about 5 lbs from when I started this.1 -
I have never been a breakfast person. In fairness to my mom, she tried! She got up every morning and cooked breakfast (bacon/sausage, eggs, and toast) for me and my sister when we were growing up. The thought of eating breakfast early in the morning made me physically ill.
After I was grown and working, I still couldn't eat first thing in the morning. And, to this day, I can't eat right after I wake up. I typically have a cup of coffee when I get up in the morning. "Breakfast" usually doesn't happen before 10:00. What I have for breakfast varies. Sometimes it's oatmeal with a chopped apple. Sometimes it's a bowl of grits with butter. Sometimes it's bacon and eggs. Sometimes it's an English muffin with sausage and/or egg. Sometimes it's something leftover from dinner the night before.
But it's NEVER cold cereal. I've never been a cold cereal person. For whatever reason, cold cereal makes me hungry within about an hour after eating it.0 -
I eat something, but it’s usually a couple of hours after I get up. I rarely want to eat as soon as I rise. Often, it has is something light.0

I have Greek yogurt, old fashioned oats, strawberries, blue berries, and banana. Add the liquid from the berries for additional moisture, mix in a LARGE bowl, and nuke. Big bowl of yum! 4SP's for the 1/2 cup of oats.

I stopped eating true breakfast years ago. However, when I was in loss mode a few years ago, I did find that if I ate something about two hours after waking up that I'd eat less for the entire day. I try to stick with that plan whether I'm hungry or not.
I have a lot of food allergies so many traditional breakfast foods are off limits for me. I do LOVE oatmeal with a little brown sugar and some fruit or a dollop of peanut butter. But I usually usually have leftovers for breakfast. Sometimes scrambled eggs and homemade turkey sausage and a slice of gf toast, but usually leftovers.0 -

Some days, breakfast is the most important meal (or at least it seems so) but it really varies a lot. It never used to--back in the day it was one of three absolutely must-haves, in a big way.
Since coming off auto-pilot and being more mindful, my breakfast is more in keeping with my sense of where I am on the "hunger' spectrum. Some days, it's 1/3 or more of my daily intake but often it's just a bit of food--usually mostly protein--to get me going. I prefer to spread my WW points out over the course of the day so instead of stuffing myself full right off the bat, a lighter breakfast ticks all my boxes.
The change in breakfast, like many of the others that came with mindfulness, has really helped me. I was in auto-pilot for decades, loading up on carbs and fatty meats for breakfast. I eat much healthier and more fulfilling breakfasts now, which in turn helps me stay flexible for meals and snacks the rest of the day.0 -
Most important? More controversial than one might think.. Huh? We say. When defined as within 1 hour of arising and consuming 300+ calories the numbers drop off . I eat after coffee and my 4 mile walk.
I do eat a bit more than before WW but not early enough to be a defined breakfast. I like my daily veggie egg/eggwhite omelet about 3 hr after arising.
For me mentally it is good to start the day one a good habit trail.
Time of day studies whether for first meal or last meal have varied results.0
