We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for March are:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - Calvin2008Brian
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard

Today's Topic:
Set GOALS for Success.
Do you? Why or why not?
Long term? Short term? Both?
How's it working for you?

Stole this from this week’s WW Weekly, and been mulling it over since Sunday.
Yes, I guess mainly because I’m “supposed to have goals”. Not a good reason IMHO.
I kinda set long term goals. Lose that last 25#. Get more activity.
    It’s not.
Have decided I need to take some of their suggestions.
    Specific, attainable short-term goals.
Although I’d like to jump in and bump my paltry 4500 step daily goal to 5000, I’m going to try to MAKE the 4500, or more, every day for 2 weeks.
Limit myself to only 1”pointy” post dinner snack, and 1 “0 point” snack. That’ll be a lot better than the constant grazing I do now.
I plan to share how these baby steps go on 3/29.

I seem to do best with my activity related goals. I'm working towards an award for doing 12 consecutive months of a 100K or longer bike ride (timed route, aka Populaire). I've gotten the worst weather months out of the way as I started in October.

I'll be back up on the Ice Age Trail in May. The winter storms we've had discouraged me from the making the long drive up there since the start of the year. I'd like to get in another 200 miles of hiking this year.

I'm struggling with my shorter term goal of staying within my daily calorie budget. Work stress and uncertainty over the future of my program have been driving too much stress eating. I originally thought we would have some firm answers by now, but it appears that we could be left hanging until the end of May.

I guess I've got "process goals" but not "end goals," at least at the moment. From a process perspective, my biggest goal is to cut out alcohol during the week. I'd say that's moderately successful, but not completely so. The other goal is to learn how to manage my Friday night/Saturday meals (those are the ones that are much larger than the regular weekday meals). Finally, getting in regular exercise, and that's been going ok.

I don't set "end-goals" because I feel like it's the process that matters. If I can get the process right, the end goals will follow. Plus, if I can get used to the process, that probably bodes well for long-term success.

I do set goals but if don't apply the correct actions to the goals on a daily basis then what will happen is exactly what happened the last 2 - 3 weeks up 12 lbs. Food to me is something that taste good. If I get on a roll as my dear DW says I go crazy. Not exactly sure? Why I do such stupid things but it happens. Is it benge eating I reckon so but when it's over in my case it's usually a train wreck.

Keeping my eye on the end goal is not near enough for me. Keeping my eye on a weekly goal is not nearly enough for me. I have to keep a daily goal in mind and then keep a per meal goal in mind as well.

That's why tracking is so important. It doesn't really matter whether it's kcal tracking or points tracking as long as I do one or the other. I did this once before a few months back and got back down but still was a net up of about 25 lbs so right now I'm back up about 35 lbs and even further away from initially where I wanted to be.
From here that century Mark looks along way away but but will get back to it and move on through. Wish me luck!

Got my chin up moving forward. :)

I set short-term goals. For instance, when I'm in losing mode, my goal weight is never more than 5 pounds below my current weight. I lost all my weight with WW using this plan of 5-pound increments. When I meet one 5-pound goal, I set another one.

Yep, I set the short term 5 lbs goals and the long term goal. Depending on how I'm doing, the short term goals can be really short like go out to dinner and stay within my calories or stay on plan this week.

I also do non-food rewards too. My new exercise leggings are coming Tuesday. It's my reward for going back to the gym and improving in the class.

I really don't set or seem to need goals to continue on this journey. I know a lot of people do and sometimes I think I might be better off if I did too. But I don't find myself lagging really. I'm OK 'treading water'. For the most part, I've kept my head in the game, even when often challenged this winter (another foot of heavy snow yesterday).

I still am going to train for C25K (almost wrote "intend to train", but know that I need my own commitment to follow through). Unfortunately, that hasn't really gotten off the ground yet but it will. I think that will be a good step-up in goal-setting and quite possibly could instill the concept in other parts of my life.

I'm going to give this one some thought; might be something I have to revisit...

More like SteveO I have process goals and standards. When I do the process something good often happens.
