We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for March are:
Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - Calvin2008Brian
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard
Today's Topic: Planning
Do you?
How far out?
Why?

We do plan. Starting with what's in the freezer, or fridge, then the market specials.
Basic planning as above. Daily? "honey, what should we have for dinner tonight?
Easier to get it done, and can pre-track, so I'll know how many points used/left.0 -
I generally plan about 1 week out to make sure that I have enough stuff in the refrigerator and freezer to make it through the work week. Trying to wing it has never turned out well.

I mostly don't "cook fancy" with recipe foods and the like. I do buy staples and keep chicken breasts in the fridge and freezer, veggies etc. We have a number of similar meals and make special stuff when the spirit moves. No other planning needed per se except to keep staples in the house. I do plan a day or more ahead when I am doing something like cooking a whole chicken in my Traeger smoker grill with rosemary and seasoning salt stuffed under the skin. Really the prep time is less than 15 minutes anyway.0

I don't but my partner does. We do some meal planning together, mainly for dinners so she knows what to get when shopping. Breakfast and lunch are mostly rotated between various foods that we routinely have in the house. I do mix & matching mostly on the day of. I like to mix things up or I get bored.
If I had to do all the food prep on my own, I'd pretty much have to be more of a planner. I'm glad I don't but if I had to I (think I) would.0 -
We plan. Not as tightly as we used to, but with the kids gone, it’s just easier for us. My wife and I have similar likes/dislikes, so we have some flexibility, so long as we get to the market. Our major [weekly] plan consists of figuring out how many nights we think we’ll be at home that week and throwing enough protein and vegetables in the cart. We usually keep plenty of pantry items (spices, dried herbs, canned tomato products, stock/broth, grains) on hand so we aren’t usually caught without an essential ingredient. If one of us has a specific recipe they want to prepare, we do a closer check of the pantry. Since I do the large shop on the weekend, my wife will do ‘fill-in’ shopping during the week.
Why? Because a cockroach could starve in our house if we didn’t plan. With our kids grown and out of the house, we just don’t keep nearly as much inventory on hand.0
