Living the Lifestyle - Tues 5/1/18

We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for April are:
Monday - Jimb376mfp (Jim)
Tuesday - Calvin2008Brian (Brian)
Wednesday - <your name could be here>
Thursday - <your name could be here>
Friday - Al_Howard (Al)
Today’s topic: "skinny foods." Nope, not the good stuff (sorry). I'm referring to those things classically associated with a weight loss diet: Atkins Bars, Smart Ones meals, sandwich thins, light bread, rice cakes, PB2, low carb this, no fat that ... the list goes on and on.
What are your experiences with any of the commonly touted "skinny foods"? What would you add to the short list above? Do any of them make it into your usual repertoire of food choices?

I regularly eat Fiber One 90 cal. bars (4SPs). They satisfy my carb and sweet tastes, and, as I get 32 SPs a day, I can afford I or 2 (for only 7SPs. TY WW math) .0

Might help DW??? I don't eat them.0

I still eat sandwich thins. LF mayo, LF salad dressing.
None recently but I’ve eaten my share of Smart Ones and Lean Cuisine. I used to add broccoli, sometimes maybe 1/2 cup of brown rice. I could turn one into a satisfying meal when pressed for time.
My first ML put me onto taking a smart one and dumping it on top of a salad. Better than it sounds.
Ate my share of egg beaters. Now I just separate the whites. 4 egg whites, 1 whole egg.0 -
I'm gonna cop to having recently purchased a loaf of store-brand light bread. It's a lifesaver when budgeting points, but beyond that there's nothing good about it.
I'll have a Smart One meal every now and again. I bought ten of them two weeks ago when I stumbled on to a half price sale, and I've had only one.
Generally, I don't go for the "light" or "reduced" or "whatever" choice very often. Real butter, for instance, is the only way to go.0 -
Much of it I don't eat anymore choosing smaller portions of "real food". However, I still use Best LF Mayo, some LF cheeses for sandwiches or omelets, Newmans LF Balsamic Vinaigrette (almost every dinner), Lundberg Rice Thin Stackers (with real peanut butter and thin apple slices) and a LF Smart Balance for toast. I bake/cook with real butter-unsalted and usually real cheese. For bread we use sourdough which is low fat/sugar anyway or sometimes I will use Dave's Killer Breads light loaves which are just smaller loaves sliced thinner but same great taste & texture.
In the end, if it doesn't taste good I won't eat or invest "points" in it. Or sometimes the ingredient list doesn't work for me. For example, I never tried PB2. Conceptually it sounds gross. I use fresh ground peanut butter from a machine at the store. The rice cake stackers surprised me when I tried them, but I rarely eat them plain. 2 make a nice snack with some PB & apple.1 -
Didn't think of it, but have used FF Miracle Whip, and FF Italian dressing for my salads and marinade for years. We tried egg beaters, but now use real eggs only, Also use the Sargento Ultra Thins(real cheese, cut real thin) for sandwiches, etc. Tried the frozen things years ago, before retirement, and hated them. TOL has used PB2, and we both use LF PB.0

I don't do any of the "light" things. I just eat regular items but in smaller quantities.0

I tried sandwich thins when WW made the first draconian hit on carbs. Found out they are too "artificially sweetened" for my taste buds and went back to quality whole grain bread. I just started cutting my bread in half for a sandwich to keep the points down.0

I personally do not eat anything that has been lightened, at least not purposely. I am quite large at the moment, so I'm not sure it's a winning strategy... but my philosophy is to have smaller portions of the real thing. I like good bread, good cheese, and real butter, and I have hit a stride in portioning those items out properly. A half tbsp of butter is only 50 cal, and it's enough to perfectly fry two eggs. Like Bill, I buy Dave's Killer Seed Bread and it's 140cal per slice of the big slices, they also sell much smaller slices that are 70cal a piece.
I've tried the lightened stuff early on, but it doesn't taste good and is unsatisfying to me.0
