We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for May are:

Topic: Breakfast

Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day? How do you fit in breakfast?

For me, breakfast is the most important meal of my day. It sets me on a solid footing. I make a fresh omelet filled with veggies every morning. I don't feel satisfied with a cold meal to start the day so I just make the time (I get up around 4:30am) to make my breakfast as I'm getting ready to head to the fitness and then to work. I'm naturally an early riser at this stage of my life so 4:30am is no big deal to me. I got up twice on vacation at 4:00am to fit in my bike rides before the rain moved in. DH likes to sleep late so it worked for us.

Breakfast has gained importance for me over the last several years. But, I am still comfortable holding out for lunch. For me, lunch is the central meal of the day.

I like breakfast, but I can go without or go with very little (a piece of fruit, for instance) if I have to. My longtime go-to is a bowl of cereal with milk and sliced banana, and toast with PB on the side. I haven't done that in several weeks because that simple meal would be > half my daily points on Freestyle. I've been finding ways to mix in zero points foods like fruit, eggs, and nonfat yogurt.

Don't know if is the MOST important, but I eat my big oatmeal/yogurt/fruit bowl almost every day. Only 4 SPs, but can't run on empty.

It’s the most important meal here.

In my 20s I didn’t eat breakfast. By lunch I’d be driving like a madman down the street looking for the shortest drive through line.

Then I got a demanding job. I had to eat something. That turned out to be cold cereal and fruit. Years like that. Then I started working in some instant flavored oatmeal in cold weather.

Fit it in? I always make a point to get up early enough.

But then DW got me into the real thing. I eat oatmeal almost everyday. Regular rolled oats, 3/4 cups dry. Current topping is sliced apple and cinnamon.

AND get this- about a year ago I started mixing in 15 grams of egg protein. Topped with the apple, it’s tasty, total 20 grams protein, and enough to feed a horse.

Since adding the protein I’ve lost about 5 lbs with no other changes. Seems to cut down on agitated snacking during the day.

For the latest 5 years I get up every morning and fix a home-made egg McMuffin. That and coffee is breakfast. 8 points.

I agree with the idea it sets you on a solid footing. It seems if I get off to a good start, with a healthy, point friendly meal, I seem to have a better day. A breakfast of convenience seems to lead to a day of convenience if left unchecked.
