We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don’t) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. “ It’s a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for June are:
Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - calvin2008brian (Brian)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday -88olds (George)
Friday - Al_Howard
Today's Topic: The "Effits"
What gets you into them?
What (if anything) gets you out of them?
Bonus: What's you favorite "Summer drink"?

Knowing when I am doing Mindless Eating but keep doing. Usually eating some “healthy” snack like crunchy granola and setting a measured amount, Opened a bag of Scoops and a jar of salsa. No measuring means no stopping
My correction is to not buy any next time. My past behavior makes me think...but AFTER the mistake is made. I’m not worried but realize just how easy it could say effit and not make a correction.
Favorite summer drink lemonade
I was reminded at WW meeting yesterday how I used to make my own simple drink,
fresh squeezed lemon, water with a little artificial sweetener.0 -
The "Effits"
Usually work stress will get me there. Especially combined with "free" food in the breakroom.
Getting out in nature snaps me out of them. Even getting to my fitness center helps. Probably just getting distance of any type away from the work setting!
This first week of the summer semester has seen my workload triple. I've been home late every night except for today. I left at 1pm and am up in Wisconsin as I'm doing a 200K bike ride tomorrow. That will offset a LOT of stress!
Favorite summer drink is ice cold water. I mean really cold water. Drinking some now!0 -
Still thinking about this, but a lot of my effits are fueled by beer. Whether out to dinner, or at home, cleaning out the cupboard.
Getting out usually occurs the next morning.0 -
I don't have a ready answer, but the "effit" question is a great one. It's something I'll try to be more mindful about. I suspect my effit behaviors are stress-driven, but I want to give it more thought. It could be as simple as misguided response to normal hunger signals.0

It's not easy for me to find in Minnesota, but Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewing Co. does a summer seasonal that is out of this world. It's like summer in a bottle. https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/holy-moses-white-ale
I just read that it's graduated from seasonal to year-round status.

So far, not something that lasts more than a day for me. Usually brought on with stress or anxiety but occasionally just getting caught up in the moment of a celebration or whatever.
However, I built the occasional effit into my plan. I knew I'd want a little flexibility in my program so I didn't always have to feel like I had to stick to the plan. My best defense is a good offense. I haven't let any of these effit days go longer than that and I think that's helped me steer clear of doing long-term damage.0 -
My version of the effits is a perceived lack of energy for thinking about eating mindfully. It usually happens when I have a lot going on and don't want to take the time to shop/meal plan. I try to get through it by simplifying and thinking "salad and protein." Sometimes it works, and sometimes I just have to ride it out and record the kettle cooked potato chips that served as dinner.
I used to get the effits when I cut out entire foods but still didn't lose weight for a few weeks. That hasn't happened in several years.0
