JUNKLESS IN JULY!

Hahaha, thanks Mihani. Actually, I had to learn to keep 1/2 my face in water when I come up to breath and then I was keeping my arms too straight after I reach. I practiced today and my stroke was much more efficient. I swam my 300 M in 10 minutes today. In the Rookie tri I swam 300 M in over 12 minutes. I got up early for tennis today and then went swimming 95* weather. I was actually shaky with hunger afterwards and hot. Had TJ's super pilaf with quinoa, kale and sweet potato mixed with spinach and hummus. Very yummy!
Carla, I am loving my little coconut date rolls when I need a quick boost.

Well done on the swim time today Donna. I need to make a TJ's trip... they have such good frozen stuff, just have to read the ingredients since a lot have oil.
Another good day. I don't think I'm going to post my meals every day because they are generally repeats. I read something on Dr. F's website that I honestly don't remember ever seeing. I know he says don't snack so your body can get to the catabolic stage for longer periods, but what I read is he recommends at least 13 hours between the end of dinner and the beginning of breakfast. I don't recall ever seeing that before. For me to do that I have to wait to eat breakfast since I go to work early and generally don't eat dinner until 6 or 6:30, sometimes later if I am stuck at the office. So I decided after reading that not to eat breakfast at home and then I got busy and totally forgot to eat until lunch! I'm okay with that, 2 meals a day is generally fine for me if I'm eating big healthy meals, and I had a lot of energy all day. I had done a 2 or 3 week stretch a few months ago of 2 meals a day and I was surprised how much better I felt. Think I'll stick with it for a few weeks again. Maybe treat myself to oatmeal on the weekends.
Dropped the 4 pounds I had gained back since doing the 6 week plan. Nice to be rid of the bloat from all the salty snacks and beers the past couple weeks. No more social events coming up for a while so I should be able to avoid those temptations.

Hi all. After a week of being ill, I am back in the saddle again. I have overindulged this summer to the point of ridiculous. Ugh. My body finally started reacting to those poor eating choices and I had a tough week. But, it was a good wake-up call. I ordered three cookbooks to keep me motivated to try new things, although keeping it simple usually works best for me.
The books:
-The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook (LOVE!!!)
-The McDougall Quick and Easy Cookbook
-The Happy Herbivore
As you probably know, Dr. Esselstyn does not allow nuts or avocados, so the recipes in the first cookbook mentioned above do not contain them. I'm going to focus on using this cookbook for now, but the others are great too.
I'm trying to decide which of Dr. Fuhrman's cookbooks to purchase. The top two that I see on amazon are his "Eat to Live Cookbook" and "Eat to Live Quick and Easy." Do any of you have a favorite between these?
After just a couple days back on track, I'm already feeling better. However, I'm trying to decide if I'm experiencing angina again - I know it's nothing to guess about. We are up to our eyeballs in medical bills already, so every doctor visit just adds to the mounting bill. If I'd kept up with my rigorous walking routine and eating right, I doubt I'd be having issues now. I'm not going to beat myself up, but am certainly motivated to act my age.

I like the Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease cookbook as well, Jacquie. I always hesitate to admit (being a big fan of Dr. F's) but I was disappointed in a number of the recipes I tried from the ETL cookbook. Your taste buds could certainly be different than mine though. I also have the quick & easy and would recommend you start with that one. It's a much prettier book for one thing, with lots of pictures, and the recipes aren't fussy. I've tried a couple and they were good. Not a big fan of Happy Herbivore, the only recipe I make fairly often is the smokey black bean enchiladas... yum. They are definitely easy recipes though. I have evolved quite a bit in my cooking since I first went vegan back in 2012, but I found the HH cookbook helpful at the time.
I love the first Oh She Glows cookbook, and even though she uses oil it is minimal and I just leave it out. Her soups are sooooo good. Forks Over Knives Cookbook is good too. I want to get the Engine 2 Cookbook, it's on my wish list!
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Did you start your new job? How's it going?

Another good day. When I got up this morning I felt a little shaky and I wanted food, but I had a cup of herbal tea and powered through. Took my oatmeal to work to eat when the 13 hours was up, and it was after noon before I remembered the oatmeal and that I was soooo hungry at 5:30 a.m LOL... good lesson learned there. I don't know that I've ever felt what Dr. F calls the true hunger signal, but I am finally learning to recognize the false hunger.

Hi
I agree with MIhani about ETL cookbooks...yikes, my husband was really into ETL last winter and made something from the ETL cookbook...a big batch that was horrible. I have not been disappointed in any of the Oh She Glows recipes.
You don't need to beat yourself up. Life is hard. Old habits that got us out of shape and unhealthy are hard to break.
Good job Mihani. I have a bit of a summer cold but went on a bike ride with Brooks in 90 degree temp. I haven't ridden much lately but the swimming and walking have kept me in some kind of condition.
We have the Movie Pass and today Brooks had off so after our bike ride we caught a late afternoon movie. The fun thing about out theater....they serve food, A/C on high and seats that recline. We order grilled vegetables with pita and hummus. It is delicious. So much better than popcorn and candy!

Mihani, are you doing intermittent fasting? I've been trying it out - I've made it to 14 hours.
I got cold feet about accepting the position. It was a strange situation. The job itself was fun (I job shadowed for a full day), but there were a few things I was unsure about. For one, the commute distance combined with low pay meant a chunk of earnings would have gone for commuting. (About 40 miles per day roundtrip with earnings that are at least 30% less than similar jobs in the area.) I would have been working for a husband/wife team. There was no job description, no set guidelines for time off (he said I'd earn one week of vacation after I'd been employed a year, she said take time off whenever you want). No benefits. They are at a critical point in their business growth, and the husband does not have a handle on what it means to have employees. I really think he sees them as an extension of himself, which is not wise, because he is undervaluing them. The person that I job shadowed was doing Admin. Assistance level work and was being paid less than the local fast food restaurant pays for counter help. So, it's back to the application process for me.
As I've looked through the Happy Herbivore I've come to the realization that I ordered the wrong book. I was looking at another title with a similar green cover and ordered HH instead. The other book was geared toward family-friendly dishes, which I found appealing. Oh well, I'm sure I'll glean a few recipes from it.

Jacquie, not intermittent fasting. I had posted a day or two ago about stumbling across something Dr. F wrote about waiting at least 13 hours between end of dinner and beginning of breakfast so your body stays in the catabolic stage longer. I knew that's why he says no snacks, but I had not read that specific guideline about the 13 hours before so I'm working it into my routine. I do find when I'm 100% eating ETL that I don't get as hungry and my cravings for the starchy salty snacks disappear. Sorry about the job.
What movie did you see Donna?
I was scrolling through my Kindle library last night and found The Pleasure Trap. I had only read half of it so I read a couple more chapters. It's interesting, will finish it up this weekend. Ironically, when I first started the book I obviously found more pleasure in escapist detective novels and quit reading it.

We went to see the Incredibles. It was not our first choice but I just wanted to get out of the heat after the bike ride. I fell asleep during part of it. It is so cold in the theaters we take blankets. Temperature was 100* yesterday during the movie.
Just had the best peach for breakfast plus an egg. Going to go do laps before it gets too hot.

I just got a couple peaches yesterday Donna... looking forward to them. I forgot The Incredibles was out. That's been on my list of things to do. I don't really see movies in theaters unless they are animated or action films.
Another good day! I will weigh again on Monday which will be a full week. I managed not to detour into the carryout for beer or wine. Harder to do on a Friday! I plan/hope to stay away from alcohol completely until I'm down another 20 pounds.

OMG this heat...sorry to keep complaining but I am melting.
Today was a Tri practice day, we biked 20 miles and at the end the temp was already up to 95*, then we went and swam indoors in a nice cold pool....so refreshing. We wanted until it was almost sunset and took dogs on over 3 mile walk. It was 102*, no breeze and muggy. We took the stroller and all 3 dogs ended up in it.
B = 1/2 banana, egg
snack on bike ride - 2 coconut date rolls.
L - salad, almond butter on cinnamon bread
D - pita bread, baba ganoush, salad and shared a dessert with Brooks.
snack diet green tea slush from Sonics.
Tomorrow is a recovery day, walk with dogs early morning before it gets to 105*
Too tired and too hot for my end of day sugar free chocolate reward.
Mihani - I know how a nice cold glass of white wine or margarita can be delicious. Good for you! I really likeD the Ant/Wasp movie. HATED THE LATEST JURASSIC PARK.0 -
The heat wave sounds dreadful Donna... it finally cooled down a bit here over the past week but I'm sure there will be some more misery in August. Predictions are rain and clouds all week. I'm fine with that! I admire your commitment to exercise... I would have stayed inside on a day like that. I think I watched part of one of the jurassic park sequels once and turned it off. The first one was fun.
I am feeling good! My energy level is definitely up after 6 days back on plan, pants are more comfy in the waist, sleeping better, and the aches I was having in my shoulder/neck and left leg are gone. I seriously do not get why I slide off when I know for a fact I feel so great when I'm on plan.1 -
Donna, I don't envy you the heat. Having grown up in Oklahoma, I understand heat waves. My daughter and I visited Austin, TX last August and felt absolutely assaulted by the heat when we got off the plane. Here in MN, we are heat wimps. We had a week of hot weather a little over a week ago (in the midst of a camping getaway for Wes and I) and I was downright cranky. But a heat wave here is usually upper 80s/low 90s and high humidity - it's the humidity that makes it unbearable. We are now in the upper 70s/low 80s and low humidity. Perfect.
Today we went to a butterfly release along the shores of the Mississippi (350 monarchs), followed by a concert (kind of folk music). Lovely day.
I just polished off a veggie sandwich. So yummy! I got the recipe from a Jill McKeever video. It contained: cucumber, tomato, spinach, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, sautéed mushrooms, and 1/4 of an avocado. Oh! And the bread was spread with cashew cream. YUM! That stuff has to be used sparingly, but it is so good.
0 -
Jacquie - your sandwich sounds delicious. Is cashew cream the same as cashew butter? I love a good veggie sandwich.
Carla - we fly into Bellingham Wednesday evening I believe, the next day we drive up to Whistler. Brooks Triathlon I believe is Sunday!
Mihani - I agree about the slide off. I finally weighed in after about 3 weeks of not so good and some days of badness (remember the stress eating of wine and brownies). I was up 4 lbs. I had some really good days but even with the exercise I am over eating. CAN'T OUT RUN A BAD DIET!!!!
I admit I have been reaching for bad carbs again when I am hungry.
Today after swim lesson (I am always ravenous) I made a fruit smoothie. I am aware I am not eating enough fruit again. I don't have a hard time with vegetables either in a salad or roasted but fruit has always been a mental block for me. I keep thinking, oh it has so much sugar...but I don't think that much about the sugar in brownies, cookies and wine. So stupid. I get off fresh fruit because it spoils so quickly if we don't eat it right away but need to at least go back to fruit smoothies.
I think I did better taking long walks everyday, occasionally swimming and biking than I do training for the triathlons. I have another one in 3 weeks and then one in September. Part of the problem is this heat. Neither the dogs or I can go for long walks in this heat.

Sounds like a really good sammich Jacquie. There's a recipe similar to that in the Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease cookbook. They use homemade hummus rather than cashew cream though. I have that one bookmarked.
Donna, I have been eating a fair amount of fruit the past couple weeks. Mostly watermelon and blueberries. So good this time of year. Hope the heat lets up some for you.
First week back on track results: 7 pounds! I was feeling awfully bloated from indulging in so much salty and snacky, not to mention the beers and wine, so I'm sure half of that is water weight, and this week will be much more reasonable. I'm just happy to be a couple pounds down from where I was when I finished the 6 week plan a couple months ago. I had bounced up a few.

Donna, maybe cashew cream & butter are the same. This was blended cashews with a bit of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and garlic. --Hey, was it hot enough for you today? Yikes! My niece in Austin told me it was 108+ this afternoon.
Mihani, now that you mention it, I've seen the video Jane and Anne Esselstyn made using the hummus (based on the P&R Heart Disease cookbook). Love their videos. And, wow, great results on your first week back!
Went with friends to the Mall of America today. We walked over 10,000 steps but also splurged at every turn. Although I've lived in Minnesota for 19 years, this was maybe the 4rd time that I've been to MOA (and the first full-day). Until today, I've never actually shopped here (previous visits were for field trips to the aquarium). Kind of fun!
Looking forward to a calmer diet tomorrow.0 -
By the time I walked dogs at 0800 it was already high 80’s. Then went to swim and it was 95*. My asthma has kicked in and I was very slow and short of breath. I still need to go spin after I pack for trip.
Lunch was a winner! Fat free refried beans and avocado on Ezekiel bread with pine nuts and black sesame seeds with an all fruit smoothie. Dinner will be salad with roasted vegetables.

Another good day... seem to be on quite a roll here. Everything just fell into place and have had a great 10 days. I am having no cravings at all. Hoping my lettuce holds out until Friday when I will have time to shop though.0
-
Y'all got me thinking about sandwiches so I threw together a very simple one for dinner. Drained and rinsed a can of pinto beans and mashed 'em up with some salsa then scooped some onto sprouted grain bread with a big pile of lettuce, some onion and a few pumpkin seeds. Tasty! I think would have been even better in a wrap but I don't have any.
Had meetings outside the office this afternoon so I got home at a reasonable time tonight. I brought work home but I think I'm going to give myself permission to laze around and read this evening. I'm kind of burned out.

I had two job interviews yesterday and, I believe, a call back on one of them - the first was for a medical office position, the other for the public library. I was at the second interview of the day when the call came in at home. I'll hopefully know today if that call was regarding a second interview. The medical office interview was digital. That was a first for me, and made me realize I'm not very techy. No matter how hard I tried I could not keep focused on the laptop camera, so to me I looked like I was avoiding making eye contact. What a hoot!
I'm starting the day with oatmeal and not sure what lunch will look like. I'm helping with decorating for a wedding this morning and we're supposed to go out to lunch when we're done. We'll also be attending the groom's dinner is this evening. At least I know that breakfast will be on target.
Mihani, your simple sandwich sounds hearty and good.0 -
Good luck on the job Jacquie! I have never done a video conference, I think I would be self-conscious and come across poorly. I'm sure they know people aren't necessarily used to it though. Sounds like a fun day for you.
All stocked up on good stuff for the week. Will be doing some prepping tomorrow. Taking the day away from the office to clean/cook/nap and brought some work home to do.

I had my second interview this morning (medical office). I came away feeling very positive! I'll know in about 3 weeks. Turns out I had worked with the manager several years ago when she was just starting out. Hoping for the best!
I stocked up on ETL approved foods today. Lots of prep to do this evening - mainly salad veggies. And, a friend dropped off a boatload of green beans from her garden. I'm planning to get them in the freezer asap. Love summer produce!0 -
I was lazy about prepping this weekend Jacquie, but did a bunch tonight. Sauteed a big bunch of broccoli and then asparagus, then some chard. I seem to find sort of assembly line cooking in a skillet easier than roasting or steaming lately. I add a bit of coconut aminos and some spices as I go. Also prepped red and green leaf lettuce, chopped radishes and carrots through the food processor, and made a double batch of E2 hummus.
The neighbor behind me has a huge veggie garden and every summer he leaves bags of tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and green beans on the fence for me. All the rewards of fresh garden grown veggies without the work! Best. Neighbor. Ever.
My weight was dropping really fast the first 2 weeks back on plan but stalled completely last week and then I had a bit of free for all over the weekend. Back at it this week.

As I prepare for a return (hopefully) to work, I want to stock up on some healthy convenience foods. I've heard that Whole Foods sells E2 products. The nearest Whole Foods is about 60 miles away, so I'm planning a shopping trip in a couple weeks. WF is conveniently located next to the nearest Trader Joes, so of course I've got to go there as well. Ha! I know it's sodium laden, but I've heard that TJs sells the Everything Bagel spice mix. Love that stuff.
I had oatmeal with berries and walnuts this morning and will have a big salad for lunch. Not sure what supper will look like. I'm hungry for beans so that will likely be it for me.
I'm still not eating that great this summer, but I'm making better choices for some of my meals and that's a start.

Whole Foods and TJ's both have great frozen products so be sure to take a cooler, Jacquie. Oatmeal is my favorite breakfast!
I have had a rough couple days with sinuses all swollen and head stuffed up. Today my throat is sore too. I am hoping it passes pretty quickly. Only stayed at the office about 4 hours yesterday and 7 today, and sure can't afford the time away from the piles of work. Happy I have food prepped. Haven't had much appetite but at least when I do eat I have healthy options. I sauteed chard the other night and going to have some in corn tortillas with homemade E2 hummus for dinner, and watermelon of course. I have been eating watermelon nearly every day the past few weeks. I still have kale, collards, and mustard greens that I need to cook before they get wilty on me. Maybe I will do that after a nap.

Got my trip in earlier than expected. I picked up all 4 varieties of E2 frozen pastas, their hummus and ancient grain wraps. Found oil free pasta sauce and a great salsa, some canned beans with spices that I haven't tried before. Also picked up a citrus balsamic vinegar as well as an imported balsamic from the Italian import market in St. Paul. Also picked up some grain blends to try. There was more but that's all I can remember at the moment. Oh! Yes, the frozen flavor cubes at TJ! Garlic, basil, and ginger. Can't wait to use them.0
-
Sounds like a great trip to TJ's and WF, Jacquie! I tend to lean more towards E2 myself when I'm feeling rebellious LOL. I totally think Dr. F is brilliant, but the lure of the starchy veggies and pastas and that they are allowed in greater quantities draws me. I just realized we're well into August and still in the July thread. I'll start a new one now.
