Vertigo on Keto

Anyone else have severe vertigo (like can't walk!) and low blood sugar (60) when starting Keto? My Dr. thinks I might have diabetes. I know these are symptoms of Keto flu, but to develop vertigo literally all of a sudden and just start stumbling around like a drunk - very scary.

I just developed vertigo last week but my guess is that mine is nit related to diet because I've been keto or low carb for over three years. In June I did cut my carbs to almost nothing but I still doubt it was related since it began almost a month later.
And in my case my BP is the same as usual. If yours has fallen it could be because of low electrolytes from lost water weight. Making sure you get 3000 to 5000+ mg of sodium a day (2300 mg sodium = 1 tsp salt) is the easiest way to fix that.
The vertigo is driving me a little nuts though. If I am moving much I 'm even getting nauseated from motion sickness ... Like I just got off some spinning amusement park ride. The room literally looks like it spins. Yuck.0 -

Are you getting enough electrolytes?
It could just be your body trying to get used to the low carb life. My BF had an episode of this about 3 weeks in, and having 1 small piece of chocolate helped. If you keep having issues, I've read that keeping glucose tablets (for diabetics) on hand for bad episodes will help.
If you have to go the route of sugar to help ease the symptoms, just remember that in very small amounts, your body will burn excess carbs and sugars within 3 hours, and you can get back into ketosis within 24 hours. I know it sucks, because you're working so hard to reverse dependency on sugar and carbs, but I think its better to have a minute amount of sugar to prevent passing out from vertigo.1 -
I hope you get it resolved. I never experienced vertigo on keto or otherwise (knocks on wood).
If it is the "can't walk" degree as you describe and persists, I'd darn sure be headed to a medical practitioner but that's just me.
I'll use this thread to insert a recent video by Dr. Stephen Phinney which is only 20 minutes and addresses 4 things near and dear to the hearts of people on ketogenic diets: protein, types of fat, sodium and fasting. It came to mind because of the suggestion to up carbs when what might be equally effective is to up sodium which is something he mentions in the beginning of the video. Enjoy:

Sounds like low sodium.

I'd get to the doctor if you haven't been already, sounds like middle year infection or similar. Hope the symptoms go

@chinatowninchina Thanks. I'll get into the doctor in the next day or so. My guess is a middle ear thing too. I don't feel ill, at all, so maybe a Ca crystal or something is in the wrong spot.
@baconslave Yuck. I'd hate to have this with any frequency. My kids are making fun of my drunken stagger already. LOL1 -
I used to suffer from severe vertigo for years, I would have to drop to the floor or I’d fall over. Eventually we figured out the crystals in my inner ears were in the wrong spots. I went to a therapist who performed something called the Epley manoeuvre and I haven’t had a serious episode since. You can also look it up on YouTube, but make sure you have someone to help you.1

Thanks! I'm going to try this until I see the doctor!0 -

This Dr. shows simple excercise to get help during vertigo. This is not a cure but it’s good to know if you find yourself in that situation until you can get some help.
Vertigo could be caused by many different things. But this video “fixed” me in 10 minutes of excercise and that was on a horrible attack I had in the office. I was on the floor puking my guts while my boss is holding the trash can for me.

You have an understanding boss!
Thanks so much! I'm using it, as well as other Epley moves and it is improving fast! Yay!1 -
Interestingly when my daughter in law had this she was fortunate to work with specialist physiotherapists who knew about this (it was a few years ago) the scary thing was that the person treating her said it was often misdiagnosed in the past (hopefully not now) and because the people with it were unable/frightened to go out they ended up being diagnosed as having mental health problems whereas all they had needed was this treatment/set of exercises. Actually now I've written this I realise that we're actually looking at Keto here too and how often people are 'misdiaognosed' when they are trying to loose weight and how they can do this!0

I have suffered from vertigo for years. When I first went keto it was super bad for 2 days I was literally bed ridden. I keep bottles of diet ginger beer on hand and having a few swigs helps me to function. I've been keto 10 months now and it is much better.0
