Interesting read. The picture on the beach from 1976 speaks loudly to how things have changed.

Great read and I agree with the self control part or will power , no one has better will power then I do right now since jan , i have worked so hard , but if I cheat I feel so upset with myself , and want to give up . society has done this to us , we must eat fast foods and live life to the fullest , but don't gain weight or look and be fat . It's crazy . when I was a kid , we ate from our farm and we also ate gravy and biscuits and cookies and home made jams and cakes . I was over weight my whole life , my mother showed us love with food . she may not hug you but she would feed you. so my thoughts on food is so messed up . My own children are not fat , but I still try to feed them all the time . I did try to do better at love then my own mother , My kids know they are loved and I swear that makes all the difference , plus meals are not loaded down with gravy and mashed potatoes and bread at every meal . but this article is right , we need to live or lives and not just feed it .1

"So here’s the first big surprise: we ate more in 1976. According to government figures, we currently consume an average of 2,130 kilocalories a day, a figure that appears to include sweets and alcohol. But in 1976, we consumed 2,280 kcal excluding alcohol and sweets, or 2,590 kcal when they’re included"
I'm extremely skeptical that the average person today eats 2130 kC/day.... (yah, right)
That casts the whole article into question...1 -

The average American consumes more than 3,600 calories daily - a 24% increase from 1961, when the average was just 2,880 calories.
Americans haven't increased their consumption of all food and drink evenly, however — our alcohol intake peaked in the 1980s, but our growing consumption of vegetable oils alone accounts for more than half of the calorie spike.0 -
Wow this is a huge surprise coming from The Guardian.1

Guardian is in the UK.... maybe a difference in comparisons? - UK eating vs. your info on US eating?1 -
It suggests British men eat more than 3,000 a day while claiming to eat 2,000. And women say they eat about 1,500 while consuming nearly 2,500.
