If I only knew then... (after-the-fact food surprises)

I knew I was going to a fancy-schmancy dinner honoring one of our area residents last night so planned and ate accordingly through the day. Dinner was to be some chicken thing and though I didn't know it ahead of time, it was served with half a twice-baked potato. I had an over-priced beer from the cash bar. I extracted the chicken from the filo-ish coating and had just half of the potato. Still doing OK, I figured.
Then they served chocolate mousse for dessert. A small dollop; I estimated 1/3 cup. When putting in the WW points after the program was over, I got a bit of a shock: 14 points (303 calories).
Dessert was served when the honored guest was speaking after receiving his award. I wasn't going to pull my tracker out and check the 'hit' before-hand and I was fine even after learning how many points. BUT, it was a good reminder that it's helpful to know the tradeoff of my food choices BEFORE eating them.
What have some of your similar surprises been and how did you react to knowing what you know after the fact? Had you known earlier, would you have made different choices?

Early on I had Sticker Shock after seeing SPs for a small wedge salad at Red Robin! Salad LOL!
My other high SP was not a surprise because I knew a Pecan Roll at Panera Bread would be High but OMG! Guess how many....See answer below.
Pecan Roll 28 SP!!!0 -
We always talk about Applebee's Oriental Chicken (fried) salad with dressing. 44 SPs.

I remember going to lunch at work to Chilis and ordering the Buffalo Chicken Salad and prudently not having the blue cheese dressing. But when I loaded it in I still had consumed my all my DPs and an unhealthy chunk of weeklies. I haven't had it since.

Too many of these to remember through the years but I do know that when I look at Apple pie, Pecan pie, Cheesecake of any sort and in your case mousse I know that I had better look out. In some cases I have eaten a couple of bites a called it a day.
I still get surprised many times and if I don't check it out ahead of time yes the same thing can happen to me.

The “just a salad” at Chili’s was about 800+ calories. Don’t recall how many points it worked out to.0

My recent shock was a turkey pesto panini. MFP said at least 500 calories if not more. I had just finished a hike. I'd taken a wrong turn so the hike was longer and harder than planned. I showed up at the restaurant late and hungry which led to a rushed bad decision. I know better. Oh well, Onward and downward.1

Good reminders, folks. I think I had my own local bakery moment several years ago, and a Panera one too. It's not too often I get sticker shock, but it's a good slap upside the head every once in a while. I guess...0

First things first: At 303 calories, that mousse is 8 points on PointsPlus. That's a reasonable splurge. ☺
My after-the-fact moment was also a salad. It's one I used to eat frequently. I made a point to ask the local restaurant how many ounces of each topping (goat cheese, raisins, candied pecans) they put on it so I could track accurately. I don't remember the total, but it was an eye-opener. I still order it now and again (without the cheese) but go in eyes wide open.0 -
Good point, @whathapnd ! Our bodies don't know which plan we're following, do they?
Funny how many salads are so far from healthy. I knew there was a reason I go for the burger and fries--they're health food!0
