We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for October below:
Monday imastar2 (Derrick)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Jerdtrmndone (Jerry
Today's Topic: Excuses
Excuses. We've all got 'em. But, to move forward and succeed, we have to find an antidote to the excuses and execute our plan...in this case...the healthy lifestyle plan.
What are some of your excuses? What did you do to get past them?

Lately, it has been stress which I managed to make it through without doing too much damage but thought about "relaxing" with various treats quite a bit. In the end, I try to use some relaxation techniques (not terribly successful lately) but what really helped was to focus on my desire to be healthy and with minimal pain issues and that requires me to get down at or near goal weight again. Its a journey that still has a ways to go and a bad week or two equals a month with no progress on that journey and puts me at risk. Focusing on that desire was stronger than my desire to show the world and have a Gyro and fries or a cheese steak and fries.1

I think I stumble at times with the it's only one [fill in the blank]. Could be one meal or one event or one week-end,whatever. I know I can't eat only one cashew nut or one potato chip too.
I am not so much of a make excuses sort of guy in general but can let habits slip away. The longer I have the better lifestyle habits the better I do in general. I often shrug off the inexcusable behavior and get right back to the habits that work. Curious as to how others get beyond the slippage that excuses breed.
I really would benefit from losing upwards of 10 lb but am struggling with the idea of doing what it would take to make that happen. Need to up my game I suppose.1 -
Recently, I was reading some comments to a post a woman made on YouTube, which highlighted her tremendous weight loss success. In it she said that saggy skin (which she has none) left over from losing weight was not a significant thought in her efforts, and she did not feel it should be for others. One woman wrote back, quite irate, saying that saggy skin should not be dismissed - that it was the one thing that kept her from losing the weight she needed to lose. She could not bear the thought of having saggy skin.
I have to admit that, of all the excuses for not losing weight, this is one of the vainest I've come across. YMMV. To me, the health benefits top the vanity issues. Don't get me wrong, I don't want saggy skin, either; but, as an excuse not to lose weight to a healthful level?
My excuses are more along the line of @podkey's. LOL.0 -
"I'm too exhausted" "I'm too stressed" these are my most common excuses for going off my plan. Food has never solved either of these problems, yet I continue to try!
@misterhub - dang, I hate to break it to that woman, but NO one is immune from saggy skin if they live long enough.0 -
Don't know if it's an excuse or a reason but stress seems to have poked itself into my life. Busy in life with my career, civic duties, church you name it. Excuses, excuses is all it sounds like to me for my situation. I know better just not adhering to what I know I need to do. I don't like excuses but yet when I don't do what I'm suppose to do I'm left with nothing but a bucket full of excuses.

@podkey You beat me to it. “It’s only X.”
X+ X+ X+ X= not so good WI.
@misterhub I’ve made kind of a study of the loose skin issue. GoaD, my meeting MFP Motivation & Support. Whatever it is, vanity maybe, it seems to be powerful. I’ve seen plenty of LS posts. Frequently the last one.
True story. One of the few guys at my meeting was near 500 lbs when he got there. He was closing in on 400lbs the day he voiced the loose skin concern. Never saw him again.
I put the loose skin issue under the general heading of “not good enough.” I’m putting in all this effort and the end result will be not good enough. Maybe it’s because I’m an old married guy and not all that concerned that I don’t look good naked.
Just luck, but I was fortunate to read this in Churchill’s memoirs about when I started: perfect is the enemy of the good.

My excuse is over exercise. Oh my back hurts to much or my knee is hurting today, I don't know if I should do that and I don't feel like going because I'm just not motivated.
What I do is ride my stationary bike 20 min. and do exercises I've learned from PT. they get my heart rate up for a little bit so I am doing some thing for myself and heart. I could do better if I motivated myself to go to the gym/pool.0 -

"It's only a couple pounds." This is my latest and I really haven't overcome it yet. On the other hand, I haven't turned it into "It's only 10 pounds" either.
I guess I've always kept this situation in perspective. I wanted to be healthier and by all measures I am. I don't think I lose that status if I gain a pound or two after losing 80. I'm not interested in perfection; I'm interested in how my body can work for me long into the future. Today, it's doing that--to some extent. If I put more time and energy into it, I'm guessing it could do it better, but my time and energy is going elsewhere and I'm OK with little fluctuations.0
