Weekend Bling Report

I got a PR for the AC half last Sunday - 1:51:07. I don't know what my prior PR was, but this was at least 5 minutes faster. It was/is my only fall race so I am really happy. My only complaint was the strong smell of hot dogs miles 7-9.0

Smashed the Abbey Dash this morning, and for the first time they did a medal... usually they only have a t shirt!
I got a new PB, taking 41 seconds off last year's time while the non training husband completed his first 10k in 54:31 :noway:5 -
That's some nice bling. And congrats on the PB.0

Won my age group at Pete Glavin Upstate NY XC Race #4 (of a 5 race series), and got a box of chocolates. My team didn't do so well; we were missing our best runner, and Syracuse Supervets finished 2-3-4 to take the team title for our age group.

I ran the Marshall marathon this weekend. I was a bit disappointed in my performance, not because it was a horrible result,
but because it was my first marathon where I just couldn't muster up the mental strength to execute it to plan. Lack of crowd support left me dragging in the final miles. Nonetheless, I did manage an age group third place since it was a small race and got this cool bowl that was from a local glass factory that has been operating for over 125 years.
Despite the lack of crowd, the course was pretty, the race was well run and the swag was awesome. All marathon participants got this very nice jacket and all participants got a tech shirt, toboggan hat and a very nice medal (of which i did not take pictures).

Yesterday and today was a virtual 5K to benefit the Pittsburgh JCC. In honor of that event, I dedicated the last 5K of the Syracuse Half Marathon to the Pittsburgh JCC.
Weather was near freezing. There were snow flurries in the air, but only wet pavement. I felt great, and was holding a sub-7 pace through 10 miles. At the 10 mile flag, I shouted, "The 5K for Pittsburgh JCC begins now!"
Then a bit past 10.5 miles, my right hamstring cramped. Walked a bit, stretched a bit. Ran a few paces till I had to walk again. Repeat. Think about the dedication to the Pittsburgh JCC and how that congregation is surviving worse stuff than a sore hamstring. Managed to run slowly for a bit more than the last mile; finished in 1:40:21 net for 3rd in the M 60-64 age group. That got me a $15 gift certificate to Dinosaur BBQ, which is Syracuse based but happens to also have a location in Rochester that is local to me. And the race jacket is pretty nice; it was too warm for today, but will find good use when the weather gets cold, assuming my hamstring issue is transitory.

I ran a small local 10k yesterday, the Christmas Cash Dash. It's usually held in December, but they couldn't get the church then, so they moved it up a month. Some people still dressed up, but not as many as usual. It was a brutal day, 33 at the start with 18-25 mph winds. The first half went well, on gently rolling hills, the second included a 100 foot hill, then the last mile and a half was directly into the wind. I couldn't breathe and slowed way down. My finish time was a disappointment, but it turns out a lot of people did badly, given the conditions, so I ended up getting 2nd place Masters Female, which was a huge surprise. (There were only 19 female runners over 40.) That rewarded me with a $75 cash prize. I've won pies before but this was my first cash award.2

We did good.

Terrific. You had great weather for it.0

My hamstring blew up on the warmup, so I took a DNS for the 5th and final race of the Pete Glavin Upstate NY XC series. But I was part of the men's supervet (60+) team that finished second in the series, so for the first time I got some bling after a race that I didn't run:

I did the Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa, OK on Sun. with The Center of the Universe detour, giving me an extra coin and making it the World's Shortest Ultramarathon at 26.5 miles officially.
The last 6.5 miles were brutal with hills and some serious wind (there was lots of wind for most of the course)... my splits prove it:
Images from the course and after the finish:
Yes, I did take off the rain/wind jacket around mile 3 and put it back on around mile 22.

Here's my finishers' bling from my 5k turkey trot at the weekend. I'm a bit annoyed with myself for not starting nearer the front and getting stuck behind slower runners and walkers. All my own fault, and probably cost me a 3rd place age-group finish. (I ended up finishing 5th). But it was a fun race and all the kids who'd run the 1 mile dash were at the finish line giving out the medals and plenty of high-fives.

Recovering from a strained hamstring. Doctor's orders were to run the 10K Race with Grace easy today, be prepared to walk if the hamstring complains. I was thinking maybe a pace of 8:30 per mile; but it was 12º F (-11º C) and it became a game of try to run fast enough to stay warm, but not so hard as to irritate the hamstring. After a couple miles, the hamstring warmed up and let me pick it up a little, but I was still careful to not go much faster than marathon pace. Ended up running my slowest 10K ever, 47:49; but each mile split was faster than the previous one. The only thing I didn't have was a real finish line kick; the hamstring didn't like that idea.
I was shocked to finish second in my age group. I knew there was one guy who would take 1st Senior (60+) and not count for the age group; but I thought that out of over 30 guys, there should be more than one other who was faster than my easy/MP effort.1 -
I ran the Newport Turkey Trot 10k in 51:43. I purposely held back and treated this as a training run (at least until the last mile ). I didn't stick around after since I had to get home and cook but apparently I finished 2nd in my age group. I wasn't expecting (nor trying) that.

I finished the Run for Pie in 57:23. My first under 1 hour 10k!6

Competed the Atlanta Track Club's Triple Peach Challenge yesterday by running the Thanksgiving Half-marathon. Started out chilly, ended up nice weather. Challenging course, mostly downhill start then over two miles of straight climb just post the half way point then rolling hills to finish. I felt severely under-trained on mile 12, which I expected, then told myself to just stop being a (expletive deleted) and pushed to the end for a 1:42:37 finish. 561st out of 5751 finishers, I'll take it.

There were mini pumpkin pies at the finish line. No pictures because I inhaled that pie in two bites.1 -
Sooo... I finished 10th in today's Cocoa Bean 5k but still ended up 5th in my age group (40-49). There are some seriously fast 40 years around here. I did win a nice Christmas blanket and got another pair of awesome gloves (love it when the swag is not the same old boring shirt).5

I ran my first half marathon this morning in Málaga (Spain), my nearest big city. It's been a heck of a ride to get there and I know (and embrace the fact) that I'm a lot slower than the vast majority of people, but I crossed the line 18 minutes before I had expected to and now I feel I can really claim to be a runner. Up until today although I've claimed to be a runner there has always been a little voice in my head telling me "nah, you're just a silly jogger". Sorry mate, that's bullchit :-)I was 90th in my age and gender group. I'll take it!
I also might be planning the next one in 4 months' time, though I have a feeling my legs might have something to say about that tomorrow!6 -
Ran the Don Curran Memorial 5K (Freezeroo #1) yesterday. The was the first race I could actually race since coming back from a strained hamstring.
The weather did not live up to the series name; it was 39° F with minimal wind, and only a couple of icy patches on a bike path. Other than that, it was a flat, fairly fast course with perhaps too many tight turns to be called a really fast course. Set out to run by feel, whatever my body would allow; turned in a very respectable 19:46 5K, 10th of 185 overall and 1st of 20 in the M 60-64 age group. No bling, because it's a low-budget series; awards are given only for cumulative series performance.
Even without bling, I'm really happy about how this one went.5 -
Finished the Helen Holiday Half(ish). Race overall was a muddy mess. 3 straight days of rain saturated the course. Gun time was a balmy 48 degrees and it didn't actually stop raining until about 2 miles into the 11.3-12 mile course (depending on whose GPS you believe). 1350-1500 feet of climb (again, depending on whose GPS you believe), most of which over mile 4.5-5.5 and miles 6-8. The creek crossing just before mile marker 9 was knee-deep and fast moving due to all the rain. And don't ask me how I PR'ed that Strasse Climb segment or held the best time on that segment for the day. No clue, but I'll take it.
All in all a good time. Lots of fun, challenging race and a challenging course. A handful of friends and I all ran. I fell only once on the trails, compared to a half-dozen times or so last year. Best part is having friends waiting at the top of the hill at the end, cheering me on.

Winter Warrior Half Marathon yesterday. 1:30:48 was a course PR for me and the fastest half I've run since turning 60.

Hearnish 5-mile (actually about 4.9 miles) this morning. Low key, no bling, all-uphill mile 2. A fun route to run when it's 14° F with perhaps 8-10 mph wind. Finished in 32:28, indicating I would not have finished under 33 minutes for an honest 5 mile distance. That was good for 10th of 129 overall, 1st of 9 in the M 60-64 age group.
This was the 4th of 6 races in the Freezeroo series. I am now leading my age group in the series, which is scored by a complicated points system using the best 4 results. The actual point lead doesn't mean anything; but there are only 2 guys who can mathematically pass my point total. Each of them would have to average more per race in the final 2 races than anyone over 60 has scored in any of the first 4 races. So it's looking pretty good for me in the series. This is mostly pride; the actual age group award is less cash than the cost of the series entry.1 -
No bling from yesterday's race, but yesterday evening there was the Greater Rochester Track Club awards banquet. Bling was awarded for 2018 running activities: Pint glass for running at least 6 of the 12 Rochester Runner of the Year races, mug for finishing in the top 5 of my age group in the RROY series, shirt for winning my age group in the series, milestone patch for running at least 200 miles of races in 2018. The patches come in the 50 mile, 100 mile, 200 mile, and 300 mile levels; this is the first year I've got a 200 mile patch, and I won't be challenging for 300 miles of races in a year any time soon.

Mostly, it looks like some Amazon shipping boxes with sharpie notes on the sides that say things like, "2017 medals." I keep the marathon medals and the current year non-marathon medals on medal racks in the living room.1 -
I spent Saturday morning running the Frosty Fat Sass trail race in Orange County, New Jersey. I AM NOT a trail runner so I was just kinda winging it. I managed to fall on the ice and slam my back within the first 2 miles but luckily only tripped one more time during the race. Today my neck is sore from the fall and my knee is banged up from the 2nd fall. Other than that it was actually kinda fun. I may do it again.
Oh, yeah... It was also my 50th birthday on Friday. What a way to celebrate.3
