What Kind Of Person Are You?

This came up on another board- someone presented a problem, someone proposed a solution and came the response- I can’t work with that solution because I’m an all or nothing kind of person.

It’s clear, but I guess I needed a reminder, we’re limited by the way we define ourselves. It’s not just the all/nothing thing, any time we categorize ourselves, we’ve imposed limits.

But very early on I had this idea- I thought to myself, “I want to be the kind of person who works out everyday.” I became that person.

Maybe it’s a two way street. Maybe I’m just stressed and sleep deprived.

I used to be an all or nothing type of person. It was stressful and exhausting. Eventually I embraced “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good enough “. “Something is better than nothing “ also is my mantra with my workouts, especially this week when I’m working long hours and am exhausted.

    It depends on the day.

But, on most days, I try to be very flexible because rigidness causes me stress, and I don't like stress. And, when others are involved, well...

This does not mean that I am not committed when I commit to something. But, I try to be very realistic in my expectations. I am pretty good at prodding folks, so I still get a lot of things done.

I'm the kind of person who:
    - needs some structure but not too much
    - has trouble forming new habits
    - needs to ease into calorie restriction versus going whole hog
    - needs to think less and act more

Interesting topic! I’m going to give this some thought and come back to it.

A Marine once said "Simper Gumby".
At the perplexed looks he told us the US Marine motto was "Simper Fi", always faithful and that his was "Simper Gumby", always flexible.

I try to be that guy, better some days than others.

That is the most practical advice I've ever read about diet, exercise and other goals. I have heart disease and use this motto to stay grounded and follow American Heart Association guidelines. Whoever came up with this should get a Nobel Prize for motivation.

I can certainly be a creature of habit good or bad. I am NOT an all or nothing type of personality except that I am stubborn when doing some activities. I have finished 200 mile one day bike rides in pain and misery. I guess for some events I am in a sense "all in". In general with the habit trails I would say that I am persistent and certainly far from perfect. I have not had that urge to throw caution to the wind just because I had a special meal or treat and exceeded my points.
