The key habit to achieve success in both weight loss and maintenance is contemporaneously tracking your caloric intake.
Those who master the habit of tracking their intake find that constantly being on top of 'how much and how much margin', leads to short-term and long-term success.
On the other hand, last month, due to travel and a son's marriage, I opted out of tracking for a significant part of June. Guess what happened?? Without any intention of adding weight and even inches, I did.
Now it's July and the wedding is over...back to contemporaneous tracking.

@RangerRickL tracking is key for me as well. Life is always throwing a weight set back our way and we learn to adapt. At least your weight set back was a happy one! You got this

Confession: I could not immediately define the word "contemporaneously" and so I looked it up. Here's what Dictionary.com had to say:
contemporaneous
adjective
living or occurring during the same period of time; contemporary.
RELATED WORDS
simultaneously, jointly, closely, collectively, unitedly, combined, commonly, mutually, unanimously, concurrently, coincidentally, concertedly, concomitantly, synchronically, synchronously
I knew I knew it - dang me if I could define it, lol.6 -

@RangerRickL - totally agree with the logging issue - I fell off the wagon big time and the pounds just crept on, so back to basics for me, and no more guessing. Monday’s fast on the 5:2 went well (the fasting days do not have to be consecutive) and as for today:
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes, took part on 2 hour long exercise classes at the gym

Yes x 3. An unplanned easy day. Annie had both a chiropractic and a massage session today (yes, a very spoiled horse) so she had the day off. Just too darned hot to ride anyone else by the time she was done. Did get 60 min of strength training and a 20 min walk at the health club this afternoon. May do another walk this eve, if it cools off. Or, just may sit here in the air conditioning a veg!10

Exercise? Check... an hour of Zumba... for those who’ve friended me you might notice I only put 45 minutes but that’s because even though I’m sweating up a storm in that class even I know I’m not burning what MFP says I’m burning for an hour of Zumba. Maybe if ever song was off the charts fast and I hop stepped every one, but I know me better than that! 😏
Tracked... yes, packing my lunch has been essential for this to work for me. I’m a sucker for fast food, but with the new job I’m forced to pack, it’s very helpful. Their cafeteria is way too pricey for my pocket!
Under calories.... by a lot tonight because I went with option 2 and had soup for dinner versus the Wendy’s apple pecan salad I really wanted and cut the calories in half.10 -

I find tracking to be essential, even in maintenance, as I would otherwise become complacent. A kitchen scale is a prerequisite for accuracy, as I weigh everything in grams. As a side note...am I over the top when I also weigh Annie's food daily and track her weight weekly?!#$%$#!??? She's the "bestest" dog ever, so I want to make sure she's around for as long as possible .8 -
Yes x 3.
